How long do I have to work somewhere to collect unemployment in Washington?

I just started a new job about 6 weeks ago and I'm worried it might not work out. If I get let go or have to quit for good cause, would I even qualify for unemployment benefits? I keep hearing different things about how long you need to work somewhere before you can collect. Does Washington ESD have a minimum time requirement? My last job was over a year ago so I'm not sure if that matters for my base year calculation.

It's not about how long you work at one specific job - Washington ESD looks at your total wages during your base year period. You need to have earned wages in at least two quarters of your base year and meet the minimum wage requirements.

What exactly is the base year? Is that the last 12 months?

0 coins

The base year is typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file your claim. So if you file in January 2025, your base year would be October 2023 through September 2024.

0 coins

i think you need to make like $3000 in your highest quarter and have wages in two different quarters but dont quote me on the exact amounts

0 coins

Close! For 2025, you need at least $3,850 in your highest-earning quarter during the base year, plus total base year wages of at least 1.25 times your high quarter amount.

This is getting confusing. So even if I only worked 6 weeks at this current job, I could still qualify if I had enough wages from my previous job last year?

0 coins

Yes exactly! The work you did over a year ago could still count toward your base year depending on when you file. But here's the thing - even if you qualify based on past wages, you still need to be unemployed through no fault of your own from your most recent job. If you've been calling Washington ESD trying to get answers about your specific situation, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you through to real agents. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

Thanks! I haven't tried calling yet but good to know there's help if I need it. So if I get laid off from this current job, they'd look at my wages from my previous job to determine my benefit amount?

0 coins

Exactly right. Your weekly benefit amount is calculated from all qualifying wages in your base year, not just your most recent job.

0 coins

WAIT hold up. Are you planning to quit or get fired? Because if you quit without good cause you're not getting anything regardless of how much you worked.

0 coins

No I'm not planning anything! The job just seems unstable and I want to know my options. I'd only quit if there was good cause like unsafe conditions or something.

0 coins

ok good just checking because ive seen people mess this up thinking they can just quit and collect

There's also something called the 'alternate base year' if you don't qualify under the standard base year. This uses the last four completed quarters instead of the first four of the last five. This can help people who had a gap in employment or started working recently.

0 coins

This is really helpful! I had no idea there were different base year options. Does Washington ESD automatically check both or do you have to request the alternate base year?

0 coins

They'll automatically check the alternate base year if you don't qualify under the standard one. The system is designed to give you the best chance of qualifying.

0 coins

the whole system is so confusing honestly. i worked for 3 years straight then got laid off and still had trouble figuring out if i qualified

0 coins

If you worked steadily for 3 years you definitely would have qualified! Sometimes the online system doesn't explain things clearly and it's worth calling to speak with someone.

0 coins

yeah i eventually got it sorted out but it was stressful not knowing

0 coins

So just to make sure I understand - the 6 weeks at my current job doesn't matter for qualification, it's really about whether I earned enough in the right time periods from my previous job?

0 coins

Correct! Your current job affects WHY you're unemployed (layoff vs quit vs fired), but your qualification and benefit amount come from your base year wages. Just make sure you can prove you're unemployed through no fault of your own.

0 coins

Perfect, that makes so much more sense now. Thank you everyone!

One more thing to keep in mind - even if you qualify, there's a waiting week where you won't get paid for the first week you're unemployed. Plan your finances accordingly!

0 coins

Good point! Is that waiting week always the first week or can it be waived in certain situations?

0 coins

It's typically the first week, though there have been times when it was waived during emergencies. Best to assume you'll have it and budget accordingly.

0 coins

also dont forget you have to be actively looking for work once you start collecting. they require a certain number of job contacts per week

0 coins

Yes, usually 3 job search activities per week, and you need to keep a detailed log. Washington ESD can audit your job search activities at any time.

0 coins

I was in a similar situation last year and used Claimyr to get through to someone at Washington ESD who explained my whole base year situation. Way easier than trying to figure it out from the website.

0 coins

How much does that service cost? Is it worth it if I'm just trying to get basic information?

0 coins

It's really affordable and saved me hours of calling. Plus you get to talk to an actual person instead of navigating phone menus.

0 coins

the washington esd website has a benefit calculator tool if you want to estimate what you might get based on your past wages

0 coins

Oh that's perfect! I'll check that out to get a rough idea of what I might qualify for.

0 coins

Just remember that if you do end up filing a claim, be completely honest about why you left your job. Washington ESD will contact your employer to verify everything.

0 coins

Definitely! I would never lie about something like that. Too risky and not worth it.

0 coins

Smart thinking. I've heard horror stories about people who tried to fudge details and ended up with overpayment notices.

0 coins

if your worried about job security maybe start looking for something else now while you still have income coming in?

0 coins

That's probably good advice regardless. Better to be proactive than reactive.

0 coins

One final tip - if you do need to file a claim, do it as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. You can't get benefits for weeks before you file, even if you qualify.

0 coins

Good to know! Thanks everyone for all the helpful information. I feel much more prepared now.

0 coins

You're welcome! Hope everything works out with your current job situation.

This thread was super helpful! I'm bookmarking it in case I ever need this info.

0 coins

same here, never knew about the base year calculations before

0 coins

The fact that your previous job wages can still count is really reassuring. Makes the whole system seem a bit more fair.

0 coins

That's exactly what the base year system is designed to do - look at your overall work history rather than just your most recent position.

0 coins

washington esd really needs to make this information clearer on their website. shouldnt have to dig through forums to understand basic eligibility

0 coins

agreed! the whole system could use better communication

0 coins

This is exactly why services like Claimyr exist - sometimes you just need to talk to a real person who can explain things in plain English.

0 coins

Good luck OP! Hopefully your job situation stabilizes and you don't need to worry about any of this.

0 coins

Thank you! I really appreciate everyone taking the time to explain everything so clearly.

0 coins

This is why I love this forum - people actually help each other figure out this confusing stuff instead of just complaining about it.

0 coins

Absolutely! We've all been confused by the unemployment system at some point. Better to share knowledge and help each other out.

0 coins

For anyone else reading this later - the wage requirements do change annually so make sure you're looking at current year amounts when you file your claim.

0 coins

Great point! Always check the current year requirements on the Washington ESD website or ask an agent for the most up-to-date figures.
