First ESD unemployment payment still pending after 2 weeks - normal wait time?
I filed my initial claim two weeks ago and completed my first weekly claim right after. When I check my ESD account it just shows 'pending' status with no other info. Is this normal wait time for the first payment? I was expecting it to be faster and I'm starting to worry something's wrong with my claim. My rent is due next week and I was counting on this money. Do I need to contact ESD or just keep waiting? Anyone know how long the first payment typically takes in 2025?

that might b normal for a first claim. mine took almost 3 weeks when i filed in january. they gotta verify everything the first time. did you do your job search activities?

•Yeah I did all 3 job search activities and logged them properly. Did you have to contact them to get yours approved or did it just automatically go through after the wait?

The first payment typically takes 2-3 weeks assuming there are no issues with your claim that require adjudication. If your claim status just says 'pending' without any mention of adjudication or disqualification, that's generally a good sign. Make sure you continue filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the first payment to process. A few things that could delay your first payment: 1. Identity verification issues 2. Employer response delays (they have 10 days to respond) 3. Job separation reason that requires review 4. High claim volume periods If you're approaching the 3-week mark with no change in status, I'd recommend trying to contact ESD directly.

•Thank you for the detailed response! That makes me feel a bit better. I'll keep filing my weekly claims and give it another week before I panic. My separation was pretty straightforward (layoff due to budget cuts) so hopefully that won't cause delays.

My first payment took 25 days!!! The system is SO SLOW. Make sure you keep doing your weekly claims even if you haven't gotten paid yet. I almost missed one because I thought "what's the point" and that would have reset everything and made it take even longer!!!!

•Same!! I got really worried and then suddenly the money appeared in my account. The ESD website never even updated to say it was approved until AFTER the money showed up.

I had the same problem last month and was freaking out because I couldn't get through to ESD on the phone. The lines were always busy or it would hang up on me after waiting forever. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an ESD agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The agent told me my claim was held up because my employer hadn't responded yet. They were able to push it through once I explained my situation. Might be worth trying if you get to week 3 with no movement.

•I hadn't heard of that service before. I'll definitely keep it in mind if I can't get through to them next week. Did they explain why the website doesn't show any information about the delay?

•The agent said that the system just shows 'pending' for a lot of different statuses. Only when there's an official issue or disqualification does it show more details. It's frustrating that they don't give more transparency!

•That's not entirely accurate. While the system can be frustrating, the standard processing time for initial claims is 14-21 days. Claims that take longer usually have specific issues that need resolution. The 2025 system improvements were specifically designed to address these delays, though they clearly still happen in some cases.

I work with unemployment claimants regularly, and here's what you should know about the current timeline: For a standard initial claim with no complications: - Identity verification: 3-5 business days - Employer response period: up to 10 days - Claim processing: 2-4 business days after employer response So the 2-3 week timeframe others mentioned is generally accurate for straightforward claims. Since you're at the two-week mark now, I'd give it another 5 business days before taking action. If it goes beyond three weeks, there are a few efficient ways to check status: 1. Send a secure message through your eServices account (response can take 3-5 days) 2. Call right when they open (7:00am) for shortest wait times 3. Check if your WorkSource office offers UI navigator services for claim status checks Also, make sure you haven't missed any alerts or questionnaires in your online account that could be holding things up.

•This is incredibly helpful information, thank you! I didn't realize employers had a full 10 days to respond. I've double-checked my account and don't see any alerts or action items I need to complete. I'll wait until the end of next week before trying to contact them.

•Good point! I've been checking my bank account too but nothing yet. I opted for direct deposit so hopefully that's faster than the debit card option once it does process.

Just following up - any update on your claim? Did your payment go through?

•Yes! It finally came through yesterday - exactly 17 days after I filed. You were right that the first one just takes longer. My second weekly claim is already showing as paid too, so it seems like the system is working now. Thanks everyone for the advice and reassurance!
