ESD tax refund wait time - how long after determination?

Just had my unemployment overpayment case resolved in my favor (thank goodness!) and ESD said I'll be getting a refund for the money they wrongly took from my benefits last year. The determination letter came today, but doesn't mention any timeline for when I'll actually see the refund money. Has anyone been through this process recently? I'm trying to figure out if I'll get the refund in days, weeks, or months? Really need this money to catch up on bills that piled up during the whole mess. Any info would be super helpful!

congrats on winning your case! when i got a refund last june it took about 3 weeks to hit my account. make sure u have direct deposit set up in ur eServices portal or they'll mail a check which takes even longer

Thanks for the quick reply! I do have direct deposit set up thankfully. 3 weeks isn't too bad I guess... was hoping it would be faster but at least now I have some idea. Did they notify you before sending it or did it just show up?

The timeline depends on several factors. In my experience helping claimants with overpayment reversals, ESD typically processes refunds within 14-21 business days after the final determination. However, there are some important things to know: 1. Make sure your banking information is current in eServices 2. If your original overpayment was more than 6 months ago, sometimes it requires additional processing time 3. If the determination was made after a hearing with OAH (Office of Administrative Hearings), it can take slightly longer Also, ESD doesn't always send a notification when the refund is processed - many people just see it appear in their accounts. I recommend checking your eServices account every few days for updates.

This is really helpful information, thank you! My overpayment was from about 4 months ago, and yes it was resolved through OAH after I appealed. I'll keep checking my eServices account regularly.

DONT COUNT ON ANYTHING ESD SAYS!!!!! They told me 2 weeks for my refund and guess what? FOUR MONTHS LATER I was still calling every day trying to get my $2,768 back!!! The system is completely broken and they don't care at all about us. Every time I called they gave me a different excuse. "It's processing" "We're backed up" "Your case needs additional review" - all BS excuses!!!!!

Oh no, that sounds horrible! Did you ever end up getting your money back? Was there anything specific you did that finally got them to process it?

I had a similar situation in January 2025. After my appeal was approved, it took exactly 17 business days for the refund to process. One thing that helped speed things up was calling the ESD claims center and specifically asking them to check if there were any "payment blocks" on my account. Sometimes they need to manually remove those after a decision is reversed. One important tip: if you're trying to reach ESD by phone to check on status, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com). I spent days trying to get through the regular phone lines with no luck, but Claimyr got me connected to an agent in under 15 minutes. They have a good demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Once I spoke with an actual claims specialist, they were able to verify my refund was being processed correctly.

Thank you for the suggestion! I was actually wondering if I should call to check on it or just wait. I'll definitely look into that service - the ESD phone lines are impossible to get through on my own.

anybody know if they pay interest on these refunds? seems like they should since they took my money for 8 months before admitting they were wrong lol

Unfortunately, ESD does not typically pay interest on refunded overpayments, even when they determine the overpayment was their error. The law only requires them to return the principal amount that was incorrectly assessed.

just want to say the same thing happened to me last year and i was so nervous waiting for the refund! it ended up taking about 2.5 weeks for me but my friend waited over a month for hers. i think it depends on how busy they are and maybe how complicated your case was. the worst part is just not knowing when it's coming!! good luck!

The uncertainty is definitely the hardest part! It would be so much easier if they just gave us a clear timeline. Thanks for sharing your experience - hoping mine comes on the shorter end of the timeframe everyone's mentioning.

I went through the exact same thing in November. Won my appeal after they wrongly said I wasn't eligible for benefits while I was on standby status with my employer. My refund was for $4,925 and I literally checked my bank account every single morning! It took 19 days total from the date of the determination letter. One thing to keep in mind - they'll refund the full amount they took from you, but if they were withholding taxes originally, they'll withhold taxes on the refund too. So you might not get the exact amount you're expecting if you had taxes taken out of your weekly benefits.

That's a really good point about the taxes - I did have them withholding taxes from my weekly benefits, so I'll adjust my expectations. And congrats on winning your appeal too! These situations are so stressful.

Thank you everyone for all this helpful information! I'll make sure my direct deposit info is updated, and I'll give it about 3 weeks before I start getting too concerned. If I don't see anything by then, I'll try that Claimyr service to get through to ESD directly. Really appreciate all the advice and sharing your experiences!

I hadn't thought of that! I'll keep that as an option if the refund doesn't come through in a reasonable timeframe. Thanks for the suggestion!
