ESD approved my overpayment waiver but no refund after 4 weeks - what now?

I'm getting really frustrated with ESD's refund process. My overpayment waiver was approved almost 4 weeks ago (got the official letter and everything), but I still haven't received ANY of my money back from the payments I already made toward that overpayment ($2,875 total). The ESD website just shows 'waiver approved' but nothing about refund processing or timeline.\n\nHas anyone gone through this? How long did your refund take after approval? I've tried calling but keep getting disconnected after waiting forever. I'm really counting on this money to catch up on bills that piled up while I was dealing with this mess. Should I just keep waiting or is there something specific I need to do to trigger the refund process?

ESD is ALWAYS slow with refunds! I had a similar situation last year and it took them 8 freaking weeks to send my money. Their system is completely broken. What probably happened is your waiver got approved but the refund is stuck in some other department's queue. Such garbage service for hardworking people who need their money!

8 weeks?! Seriously? That's ridiculous when they expect us to pay them back immediately when they decide we owe them. Did you have to do anything special to finally get your refund or did it just magically appear one day?

The refund process is separate from the waiver approval and typically takes 4-6 weeks to process through ESD's accounting department. I went through this last June - waiver approved in May, but refund didn't arrive until early July.\n\nTwo things you should do:\n1. Check your eServices account under 'notices' to see if there's a benefit payment processing notice\n2. Send a secure message through the portal specifically asking about the status of your refund (not just about the waiver)\n\nAlso make sure your address and direct deposit info is current in the system. Sometimes they'll send a paper check even if you had direct deposit set up.

I had EXACTLY the same problem last month! My waiver was approved but no refund for like 5 weeks. I kept calling that stupid 800 number and could never get through. Finally I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get past the hold times and actually talk to someone at ESD. The agent told me my refund was

is that service legit? seems weird to pay just to talk to unemployment people that our taxes already pay for...

Yeah I was skeptical too but it actually worked. I spent weeks trying to get through on my own with no luck. The ESD agent told me they're seeing a lot of these refund delays right now because of some new system they implemented. Apparently you have to specifically request them to check on the refund status.

According to ESD regulations, refunds from approved overpayment waivers should be processed within 30 business days (approximately 6 weeks). However, I've worked with several clients who didn't receive their refunds until requesting an escalation.\n\nYou should:\n1. Document all your attempts to contact ESD\n2. Send a secure message through eServices requesting status and specifically mention it's been over 4 weeks\n3. If no response in 5 business days, contact your state representative's office\n4. Request they submit a legislative inquiry about your refund\n\nMany people don't realize that state representatives can help expedite unemployment issues. Their constituent services staff deal with ESD regularly and often get faster responses.

Thank you for this detailed advice! I didn't know about the state representative option - that's really helpful. I'll try the secure message first and wait 5 days like you suggested. If that doesn't work I'll definitely reach out to my representative. \n\nDo you know if the refund would be issued the same way I originally paid the overpayment? I made payments through their online system using my debit card.

9 WEEKS?! That's absolutely insane. The people who designed this system should be forced to live on unemployment for a year so they understand what they're putting us through.

Update: After following the advice here, I finally got my refund! I tried the secure message first with no response for a week. Then I used Claimyr to get through on the phone. The agent said my refund was approved but hadn't been

Glad you got it resolved! This is unfortunately a common issue with ESD refunds - they get stuck in that limbo between approval and accounting. Thanks for updating us on what worked for you.
