ESD payment sent to closed bank account - how to recover funds?

I checked my claim status and see that ESD marked my unemployment benefits as 'paid' last Thursday, but I just realized the direct deposit went to my old bank account that I closed last month. I updated my banking info in the ESD portal for future payments right away, but does anyone know what happens to that money that was already sent? Will it automatically bounce back to ESD and they'll reissue it? Do I need to call them? I'm really stressed because I was counting on that money for rent next week.

Thanks, I was hoping it would be automatic. Has anyone had luck getting through on the phones lately?

This happened to me back in January. The payment will be rejected by your bank and returned to ESD, but it doesn't automatically get reprocessed. You need to contact ESD to have them reissue the payment once they get the funds back. The problem is that the bank rejection process can take 3-5 business days, and then ESD's reprocessing can take another 1-2 weeks. Make sure your new banking info is correct in the system before they reissue the payment. Also, double check that you updated it through the direct deposit section and not just in your profile information.

Oh no, 1-2 weeks? I really need that money sooner. Did you have to keep calling until you got through or is there another way to contact them?

I went through something similar last month. The payment bounces back to ESD, but then it gets stuck in their system until you contact them. I spent TWO DAYS trying to get through on the phone with no luck - kept getting the "high call volume" message and disconnects. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The agent was able to see that my payment had been returned and put in a request to have it reissued to my updated account. Still took about 3 business days to get the money after that, but at least the process was started. Make absolutely sure your new bank info is entered correctly before they reprocess it!

Thank you for this tip! I'll check out that service because I really can't afford to wait weeks for this money to be reissued.

THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED TO ME!!! The system is SO BROKEN! They sent my payment to my closed Wells Fargo account even though I had updated my info WEEKS earlier! When I finally got through to someone they claimed they never received my updated banking info even though I had confirmation! It took me nearly a MONTH to get my money!!!!

A month?! That's ridiculous. Did you have to file some kind of formal request or dispute? I'm worried because my payment shows 'paid' too but went to a closed account. I'm not sure if I should just wait or be more proactive.

This is a common problem with ESD. When your payment goes to a closed account, the money will get rejected and return to ESD, but it doesn't automatically get reprocessed. Here's what you need to do: 1. Make sure your new banking info is properly entered and verified in your ESD account 2. Contact ESD to inform them about the closed account 3. They'll have to manually reissue the payment once the funds are returned Typically banks will reject and return the funds within 2-5 business days. Once ESD receives the returned funds, they can reissue the payment, which usually takes another 2-3 business days. If you need the money urgently, definitely be proactive about contacting them rather than just waiting. Unfortunately, their system doesn't automatically notify them when payments fail.

This is really helpful information - thank you! I'll definitely be proactive about contacting them. It's frustrating that their system doesn't track failed payments automatically.

I did send a message yesterday through the portal but haven't heard back. You're right, this is probably something I need to talk to a real person about. Just wish it wasn't so hard to get through!

Just checking in - were you able to get this resolved? If you're still having trouble, you might also want to check if your local WorkSource office is open for in-person assistance. Sometimes they can help with these issues or at least connect you with the right ESD staff.

Update: I used the Claimyr service that someone suggested and finally got through to ESD! The agent confirmed my payment was rejected by the bank and is now back with ESD. They're reprocessing it to my new account and said I should receive it in 3-5 business days. Thanks everyone for your help!

Same thing happened to my friend last year and she had to wait almost 3 weeks to get it sorted out. The bank rejection process is slow and then ESD takes forever to reprocess. One tip - if you have any confirmation emails or screenshots from when you updated your banking info, save those! Sometimes ESD claims they never got the update even when you have proof you submitted it. Also make sure to check that your new account can actually receive ACH transfers - some newer online banks have restrictions that can cause issues.

That's a great point about checking ACH transfer restrictions! I didn't even think about that. I'm using a newer online bank for my updated account info, so I should definitely verify they can receive unemployment payments before ESD tries to send the reissued payment. Thanks for the tip about saving confirmation emails too - I took screenshots of everything just in case they try to claim they didn't receive my banking update.

I'm dealing with this exact same issue right now! My payment was sent to my old Chase account that I closed two months ago. Reading through everyone's responses, it sounds like I need to be proactive about calling ESD rather than just waiting for it to automatically bounce back. Has anyone had success getting through on the phones early in the morning? I've been trying during lunch breaks but keep getting disconnected. Also wondering if there's a specific department I should ask to be transferred to when I do get through - like is there a payment processing team that handles these situations specifically?

I've had better luck calling right when they open at 8 AM - seems like the phone lines are less jammed first thing in the morning. When you do get through, ask to speak with someone in the "Payment Services" or "Direct Deposit" department - they're the ones who can actually see your payment status and initiate the reissue process. Regular customer service reps sometimes can't access all the payment details. Also, have your claim number and the exact date of the failed payment ready when you call - it speeds up the process. Good luck getting through!

I just went through this nightmare last month! My payment got sent to my closed Bank of America account and it was such a headache to resolve. Here's what I learned: the bank will reject the payment within 3-5 business days, but ESD doesn't get notified automatically that it failed. You absolutely HAVE to call them or use that message center to let them know what happened. I waited two weeks thinking it would just bounce back and get reprocessed automatically - big mistake! Once I finally got through to someone and they saw the returned payment in their system, they were able to reissue it pretty quickly. Make sure you triple-check that your new banking info is correct before they send the replacement payment though, because if that one fails too you'll be waiting even longer. The whole process took about 3 weeks total for me, but most of that was my own fault for not being proactive about contacting them right away.

This is really helpful - thank you for sharing your experience! It sounds like the key takeaway is to contact ESD immediately rather than waiting for them to figure it out on their own. Three weeks is a long time to wait for money you're depending on. I'm curious - when you finally got through to someone, were they able to tell you exactly when the bank had returned the funds to them? I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to track when the rejection actually happens so I know when to start pushing ESD to reprocess it.

I'm going through this exact situation right now too! My payment was marked as "paid" on Tuesday but went to my old credit union account that I closed in February. After reading everyone's advice here, I called ESD first thing this morning at 8 AM and actually got through after about 45 minutes on hold. The agent confirmed that my payment was indeed rejected by the bank yesterday and the funds are now back in their system. She was able to see my updated banking information that I had entered last week and said she's putting in a request to reissue the payment to my new account. She told me to expect it within 3-5 business days. For anyone else dealing with this - definitely call as early as possible and ask specifically for "Payment Services" when you get through the initial menu. Having your claim number and the exact payment date ready really did speed things up. Also, the agent mentioned that they're seeing a lot of these closed account issues lately, so you're definitely not alone if this happens to you!

That's great that you were able to get through so quickly this morning! It's really encouraging to hear that the agent could see everything in the system and initiate the reissue right away. I'm dealing with the same situation and have been dreading having to spend hours trying to get through on the phone. Your tip about asking specifically for "Payment Services" is super helpful - I didn't know there were different departments you could request. Thanks for sharing your experience and glad you got it sorted out relatively painlessly!

I had this happen to me about 6 months ago when I closed my old Wells Fargo account but forgot to update ESD right away. The good news is that the bank will definitely reject the payment since the account is closed - usually within 2-3 business days. The bad news is that ESD won't automatically know about the rejection or reprocess it without you contacting them. Here's what worked for me: I called ESD the day after I realized what happened (don't wait for the rejection to process first). When I got through, the agent was able to put a note on my account about the closed bank situation. Then once the funds were returned to ESD a few days later, they already had my updated banking info and the note about the issue, so they reprocessed it pretty quickly. The key is being proactive - if you wait for ESD to figure it out on their own, you could be waiting weeks or even months. Also, take screenshots of your updated banking information in the portal as proof you made the change, just in case there are any disputes later. Good luck getting through on the phones!
