ESD message says I 'no longer need to do weekly claims' but job search still required - what's going on?
I'm totally confused by what just happened with my unemployment claim. Today I logged in to file my weekly claim like usual, answered all the normal questions, and then got this weird message saying I 'no longer need to do weekly claims' but I still need to 'continue to do job searches and keep a log of those searches.' The message confirmed my claim for this week was submitted, but what about future weeks?? I've been on UI for about 2 months after being laid off from my accounting job. My benefit amount is $950/week and I haven't had any issues until now. Nothing has changed with my situation - I'm still unemployed and actively looking. Has anyone seen this message before? Could this mean my benefits are ending, or is it some kind of system glitch? I'm freaking out a little because I need these benefits to pay my mortgage!

•I don't think that's it? My employer permanently laid me off - there's no job to go back to. And I thought standby was only for temporary layoffs? Now I'm even more confused...

This message typically appears when your claim is transitioning to a different status or benefit type. Have you exhausted your regular UI benefits? Check your Determination Letter in your ESD account for any recent updates. Also look at your remaining benefit balance - if it shows $0, you might be transitioning to Extended Benefits if those are currently available in 2025. The fact that it's telling you to continue job searches is a good sign - it means you're still eligible for some type of unemployment benefit. But you should definitely contact ESD directly to clarify exactly what's happening with your specific claim.

•Thank you! I just checked my account and my benefit balance is showing $5,700 remaining, so I haven't exhausted benefits. There's no new determination letter either. I'll try calling ESD tomorrow, but we all know how that goes... 😫

I experienced this exact same thing last month! For me, it turned out I was being automatically enrolled in a training program through WorkSource. When this happens, your claim gets flagged as a "Training Benefits" claim rather than regular UI, which changes how you file. Did you recently talk to anyone at WorkSource or sign up for any training programs?

•I did meet with a WorkSource counselor two weeks ago! They recommended some Excel certification courses for accountants, but I didn't think I'd officially enrolled in anything yet. Maybe that triggered something in the system? Did you have to do anything special for your Training Benefits claim?

•That's probably it! With Training Benefits, you typically don't file weekly claims in the same way. Instead, you'll likely need to submit verification of your training participation directly to your case manager on a monthly basis. Check your correspondence tab for any letters about Training Benefits approval. The good news is that while you're in approved training, you usually don't have to do the 3 job searches per week - the training counts instead!

I HATE how ESD just throws these confusing messages at us with ZERO explanation!!! Last year they randomly told me my benefits were denied after 4 months of payments, then approved again a week later, then reduced with no explanation. The whole system is designed to frustrate people so they'll give up. You NEED to call them but good luck getting through - I tried for THREE WEEKS straight last year and either got hung up on or was on hold for hours only to be disconnected.

•If you're having trouble reaching ESD by phone, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to an actual ESD agent without the endless holds and disconnects. It worked great for me when I had a similar confusing message about my claim status. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Their website is claimyr.com - definitely worth checking out when you need answers quickly about confusing claim situations like this.

•Thank you! I'll check it out if I can't get through tomorrow. I've tried calling ESD before and it's almost impossible to reach someone. Really appreciate the tip!

This happened to me last year!! It was actually a good thing - in my case I was being switched to a different tier of benefits that required less frequent filing. Still got paid every week but only had to report once a month. Saved me a lot of hassle honestly. But definitely check with ESD to make sure that's what's happening in your case.

•That would actually be great if that's what's happening! Less paperwork but still getting benefits would be ideal. I'll definitely confirm with ESD. Thanks for sharing your experience!

After reading through everyone's responses, it sounds most likely that you've been placed in a Training Benefits program following your WorkSource meeting. This is generally positive as it allows you to focus on gaining new skills while still receiving benefits. Here's what you should do: 1. Check your correspondence tab for any notifications about Training Benefits approval 2. Contact your WorkSource counselor directly to confirm your enrollment status 3. Verify if your job search requirements have changed (typically reduced or eliminated during approved training) 4. Make note of any new reporting requirements that replace weekly claims Training Benefits can last up to 52 weeks in Washington state and often provide more stable support while you upskill. The Excel certification courses you mentioned would qualify as approved training for an accounting professional.

•Update: You were right! I finally got through to ESD this morning (using that Claimyr service someone recommended - worked great), and they confirmed I was approved for Training Benefits after my WorkSource meeting. I'll be receiving an official letter in a few days. Instead of weekly claims, I just need to verify my training attendance monthly. And my benefits will continue at the same amount! Such a relief. Thank you everyone for your help!
