NYS Department of Labor weekly claim says unemployment at a low - what does this mean for my benefits?
Got a weird message on my weekly claim certification today that said something about 'unemployment at a low' and now I'm worried about my benefits. I've been collecting for about 8 weeks after getting laid off from my retail job in December. My claim was approved without any issues and I've been getting my payments regularly. But this message has me confused - does this mean they're going to cut off my benefits early? I meet all the job search requirements and report everything correctly. Has anyone else seen this kind of message from NYS Department of Labor?

This message typically appears when the state's unemployment rate drops below certain thresholds. It doesn't mean your individual benefits will be cut off as long as you're still eligible and filing your weekly claims correctly. NYS Department of Labor is just providing information about overall economic conditions. Your benefits continue as normal until you find work, exhaust your benefit year, or become ineligible for other reasons.

•Oh thank goodness! I was panicking that they were going to stop my payments. So I just keep filing my weekly claims like normal?

Low unemployment rates can sometimes affect extended benefit programs, but regular UI benefits aren't impacted by these messages. Just make sure you're keeping up with your job search requirements - that's usually 3 work search activities per week in NY. Document everything in case they audit your job search log.

•Wait, is it 3 activities per week? I thought it was 2? Now I'm worried I've been doing it wrong...

•It's 3 activities per week unless you're in a training program or have other exemptions. Check your eligibility requirements on the NYS Department of Labor website to be sure.

I had so much trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor when I had questions about my claim status. Kept getting disconnected after waiting on hold for hours. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected directly to an agent - they have this video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Was able to get my adjudication issue resolved in one call instead of weeks of trying.

•Never heard of that service before. Did it actually work for reaching someone at NYS Department of Labor?

•Yeah, got connected within like 10 minutes instead of the usual runaround. Really saved me a lot of stress when my weekly claim got stuck.

The unemployment system is so confusing with all these random messages! I remember when I first started filing I thought every notification meant something was wrong with my claim. Turns out most of them are just informational.
