ESD first payment missing previous unpaid weeks - will they be included?

Just got my first unemployment payment from ESD after 6 weeks of waiting, but I'm confused about what it covers. I filed my initial claim on March 2nd, 2025, but only received payment for the most recent week. There are 5 other weeks that show as 'processed - paid' on my account but no money for them yet. Will these previous weeks be included in a separate payment? My first deposit was only $867 which seems like just one week of benefits. Anyone know if ESD automatically sends the back payments later or do I need to call them? I'm worried because I've got $4,750 in bills piling up while waiting for these payments.

Back payments usually come separately. When my claim finally processed last month, I got my current week first, then about 3-4 days later I received a lump sum for all the previous weeks. ESD processes current weeks first, then works backward. As long as those weeks show 'processed - paid' in your account, the money should be coming soon. Just keep an eye on your bank account.

Thanks, that's really reassuring! So I shouldn't panic just yet. Did all your back payments arrive in one lump sum or as separate deposits?

mine didnt come all at once either. got like 3 different payments over a week. first one was just the newest week then the others came randomly. ur good as long as it says paid in the system

Thank you! It's been 2 days now and still nothing else has shown up, but I'll try to be patient a bit longer.

This is a common issue with ESD's payment system. The backpay situation is frustrating and inconsistent. Their system prioritizes current weeks first, then works through the backlog. Here's what you need to know: 1) If your weeks show as 'processed - paid' they ARE coming, but could take 3-7 business days 2) Each week might arrive as a separate deposit or as grouped payments 3) If nothing arrives within 7 business days, THEN you need to contact ESD The system is especially backed up at the end of quarters (March/June/September/December) due to quarterly processing requirements. Since you filed in early March, you got caught in that end-of-quarter backup.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! That makes more sense now. I didn't realize the quarterly timing might be affecting things. I'll wait the full 7 business days before getting too worried.

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM and spent THREE WEEKS trying to get through to ESD!!! They never answer their phones and when I finally got someone they just said to 'wait' and couldn't tell me when I'd get my money. The whole system is designed to make people give up! I ended up filing a complaint with my state representative because I almost got evicted waiting for my back pay. The system is BROKEN and they don't care about people actually suffering!!!

That sounds awful! I really hope I don't have to wait three more weeks. I'm already behind on rent because of this delay.

If you're worried about reaching ESD (which is understandable), I used a service called Claimyr last month when I was in a similar situation. It got me through to an actual ESD agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending days trying to get someone on the phone. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. It was definitely worth it to get confirmation about my back payments instead of stressing for days.

does that really work? i thought those services were scams lol

It's legitimate - they basically automate the calling process and notify you when they've got an agent on the line. Saved me hours of redial frustration. I was skeptical too at first but it actually worked.

I might try this if I don't see the payments by next week. Getting some confirmation from an actual ESD agent would at least give me peace of mind.

okay so i work at an employment agency and tell people about this ALL THE TIME. esd does back pay in weird chunks sometimes. heres the thing - the weeks u already certified and that show as paid WILL get paid, but sometimes it takes them up to 10 days to process all the payments especially if u had a long wait for initial approval. its annoying but just hang tight! only call if u dont see anything after like a week tbh

Thank you! Hearing from someone who deals with this regularly is very helpful. I'll wait a full week before panicking.

did u set up direct deposit or are u getting the debit card? cuz the card takes wayyy longer

I set up direct deposit, thankfully! That's how I got the first payment. Just waiting on the rest now.

Quick update for you - I just checked the ESD website and they posted a notice about payment delays for claims processed between March 1-15, 2025. They're experiencing issues with their payment processing system and some payments are taking longer than usual. They state all back payments should be issued by March 25th. This likely explains your situation.

Thank you so much for checking! That's really helpful information. At least now I know it's a system-wide issue and not just my claim.

Of COURSE they have another 'system issue' - seems like they have one EVERY MONTH! But do they ever communicate this to people who are desperately waiting for money to pay bills? NOPE!!

UPDATE: Just wanted to let everyone know that my back payments finally came through! They came in two separate deposits - one with 3 weeks combined and another with the remaining 2 weeks. Took 8 days total after the first payment. Thanks to everyone who helped reassure me this was normal!
