ESD claim status changed from adjudication to 'waiting on information' then back to adjudication - should I be worried?

I've been stressing about my unemployment claim for the past 3 weeks. It initially went into adjudication status (which I expected due to quitting my retail job), but yesterday it suddenly changed to 'waiting on information.' I got excited thinking maybe they were just waiting on my former employer... but when I checked again this morning, it's back to 'adjudication in progress'! Is this a bad sign? Does this status flip-flopping mean there's a problem with my claim? Has anyone experienced this before? I'm getting really anxious because my rent is due next week and I've already burned through most of my savings.

yep, mine did the exact same thing last month. went back and forth between those statuses like 3 times before they finally approved it. took almost 5 weeks total. ESD systems are weird sometimes, don't panic yet

Thanks for sharing! Did you do anything during that time to help move it along? I'm worried because I quit my job (had legitimate reasons - unsafe working conditions they refused to fix).

This is actually normal for the ESD claims processing system. When your claim moves to 'waiting on information,' it means they're reviewing documents or waiting for responses from your employer. When it returns to 'adjudication,' they're actively working on making a determination. Your claim is likely following the standard process, especially since you mentioned quitting your job which automatically triggers adjudication to determine if it was for good cause. The average adjudication time right now is about 4-6 weeks.

Thank you for explaining! That makes me feel a bit better. Do you know if there's any way I can check what information they're waiting for? I submitted all the requested documents already.

Unfortunately, the eServices portal doesn't always show specifically what information they're waiting for. Continue checking your online account for any new action items or requests. Make sure to keep filing your weekly claims while waiting - this is extremely important. If the adjudication extends beyond 6 weeks, you may want to try contacting them directly, though that can be challenging due to high call volumes.

THE SAME THING IS HAPPENING TO ME RIGHT NOW!!! Been stuck in adjudication for 5 WEEKS, then yesterday it changed to 'waiting on information' and today back to adjudication! I've called like 50 times and NEVER get through. This system is BROKEN and they don't care that people can't pay bills while they bounce us around!!!

That's really frustrating! Have you tried contacting your state representative? I was stuck in adjudication for 7 weeks last year and emailed my rep with my claim ID and situation. Their office contacted ESD on my behalf and my claim was resolved within 3 days. Worth a shot if you're desperate.

These status changes are actually part of the normal workflow in the ESD system. When you see 'waiting on information,' it typically means they've sent a request to your former employer to verify the reason for separation. When it switches back to 'adjudication,' it means they've either received that information or are proceeding without it due to time constraints. Regarding your quit: Make sure you have documentation about the unsafe working conditions and any attempts you made to resolve the issues with your employer before quitting. Quitting for workplace safety issues can qualify as 'good cause,' but you'll need to demonstrate that you made reasonable efforts to address the situation before leaving. Submit this documentation through your eServices account if you haven't already, even if they haven't explicitly requested it yet.

Thank you so much for this detailed explanation. I do have emails I sent to management about the safety issues, plus photos of the unsafe conditions and a doctor's note recommending I remove myself from that environment. I uploaded those with my initial claim, but maybe I should send them again?

Those documents sound perfect. If you've already uploaded them, there's no need to send them again unless specifically requested. The system will flag duplicate submissions. Your case sounds quite strong for establishing good cause to quit. Continue filing your weekly claims, and if nothing changes in 2 more weeks, then you might want to try contacting them directly.

My sister just went through this last month. Her claim was in adjudication for like 4 weeks, then switched to waiting on info for 2 days, back to adjudication for a week, then suddenly approved. ESD is just super backed up right now from what I hear.

My claim had the same issue, but mine was due to a seasonal job ending. I finally called and they told me the status changes happen when different departments are reviewing your claim. My claim got approved after about 3.5 weeks, even with the status changes. Definitely keep filing your weekly claims while waiting!

How did you manage to get through on the phone? I've been trying but always get the 'high call volume' message.

I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that connects you with ESD without having to wait on hold forever. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Got through to an agent in like 25 minutes instead of spending days trying to call. The agent was actually able to see notes on my account explaining why the status was changing.

btw make sure you keep doing your 3 job search activities every week and logging them even while in adjudication. my friend got approved after waiting forever but then got disqualified cuz he didn't do his job searches during the waiting period. don't make that mistake!!

Oh gosh, thanks for the reminder! I've been doing them but wasn't sure if I needed to since I'm not getting paid yet. I'll definitely keep up with it.

From my experience working with claimants, these status changes are completely normal and don't indicate problems with your claim. The ESD computer system updates statuses based on which department is currently handling your claim. 'Waiting on information' often means they're gathering employer responses or reviewing documents, while 'adjudication' means they're actively making a determination. For voluntary quit cases like yours, they're looking for documentation that shows you had good cause to leave. The fact that your claim is moving through different statuses actually suggests it's being processed, not stuck.

That's really reassuring to hear from someone with experience. I was worried the back-and-forth meant something was wrong. It sounds like I just need to be patient for a bit longer.
