Claim status changed from 'adjudication' to 'pending' - what's next with ESD?

Hey everyone, I'm a bit confused about my unemployment claim status. I filed my initial claim on Sunday last week, and noticed it was in adjudication for the first two weeks (was super nervous about that). But now when I logged in today, the adjudication status disappeared completely and it just shows as "pending" instead. Should I be worried? Is this a good sign or bad sign? My head is spinning trying to figure out what this status change actually means. Does anyone know if "pending" means they're about to approve it or if I'm stuck in some new kind of limbo? Really need this money soon as rent is coming up fast.

This is actually a good sign! When your claim moves from adjudication to pending, it typically means ESD has completed their review of whatever issue required adjudication and they're now just processing your payment. In my experience, pending status usually only lasts 2-3 business days before changing to paid. As long as you keep filing your weekly claims, you should see movement soon.

OMG thank you so much! That's a huge relief. I've been staring at my eServices account obsessively. Do you know if the payment will be retroactive for those first two weeks too?

same thing hapnd to me last month... was in adjdcation for like 18 days then went to pending for 2 days then paid!! hang in there

0 coins

Thanks! Did they pay you for all the weeks including the ones that were in adjudication?

yep got all of it at once was a nice surprise lol

I waited FIVE MONTHS in adjudication last year!!! The ESD system is completely BROKEN!! They never even told me why I was in adjudication in the first place!!! Had to sell my car to pay rent while waiting for these incompetent bureaucrats to do their job!!!!!

That's terrible you had to wait so long. The system definitely gets overwhelmed sometimes. For the OP though, the change to pending is definitely a positive step in their specific situation.

The transition from adjudication to pending is a normal part of the claim processing sequence. During adjudication, ESD is investigating specific issues related to your eligibility. Once that's complete, your claim moves to pending status while they process the payment. Here's what happens next: 1. Your status should change from pending to paid within 2-5 business days 2. Direct deposit usually takes 24-48 hours after the status changes to paid 3. Debit cards take 3-5 business days to arrive after first payment If it stays in pending status for more than a week, that might indicate another issue has arisen. Keep filing your weekly claims regardless of your claim status.

Thank you for breaking that down! I have one more question - when it goes to paid status, will it show somewhere in my account exactly how much I'm getting? The estimated benefit amount they showed me when I first applied seemed really low compared to what I was making.

0 coins

Yes, once it moves to paid status, you'll see the exact payment amount under the "Payment History" section of your eServices account. If your benefit amount seems incorrect, you can request a monetary reconsideration, but that's a separate process from your current adjudication/pending situation.

I went through exactly this in January. My claim was stuck in adjudication for 3 weeks, then went to pending for about 4 days before getting paid. If you're really anxious about it, I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual ESD agent on the phone after I'd been trying for days on my own. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 that shows how it works. The agent I spoke with was able to tell me exactly what was happening with my claim and when I could expect payment. Gave me peace of mind during a stressful time.

did that actually work?? i might try that next time cuz calling ESD is impossible

0 coins

Yeah, it did! I spent three days trying to call on my own and kept getting disconnected or told to call back later. With Claimyr I got through in about 40 minutes. Agent told me my claim was already approved and just waiting for payment processing.

I think I'm confused about terminology. Is adjudication the same as disqualification? My claim says disqualified and now I'm worried reading this thread.

0 coins

No, they're completely different! Adjudication means your claim is being reviewed. Disqualification means they've determined you're not eligible for some reason. You should appeal the disqualification right away if you believe it's incorrect. You only have 30 days to appeal from the date of the determination letter.

0 coins

Oh no!! I got the letter 27 days ago! How do I file an appeal? Is there a form on the website?

0 coins

Wait when did you file your claim? You said last Sunday but also said you were in adjudication "for the first two weeks"? Timelines not making sense...

0 coins

Sorry if I wasn't clear! I filed my initial claim 3 weeks ago, then submitted weekly claims each Sunday since then. The first two weekly claims showed as "adjudication" status, but now when I check on my third week, nothing shows adjudication anymore - everything just says pending now.

0 coins

Got it that makes more sense. Yeah pending is def better than adjudication!

Just to follow up on this thread - the standard progression of an ESD claim is: Submitted → Processing → Adjudication (if there are issues) → Pending → Paid Some claims skip adjudication entirely if there are no eligibility questions. The fact that yours moved from adjudication to pending is definitely a positive sign. Make sure you continue completing your job search activities (3 per week) and filing your weekly claims while you wait for payment processing.

Thank you! I just got an update this morning - it switched to paid! You were right about the progression. For anyone finding this thread later, it took exactly 3 days to go from pending to paid. Such a relief!

Congratulations on getting to paid status! That's awesome news. For anyone else reading this thread who might be in a similar situation, I just wanted to add that you can also check the ESD website's "Processing Times" page to get a general idea of current delays. Right now they're showing about 2-3 weeks for adjudication cases, so if you're still waiting, don't panic - the system is just backed up but it's still moving. Also make sure to keep filing your weekly claims even during adjudication because you can't get paid for weeks you didn't claim, even if your case gets approved later.

This is really helpful advice! I didn't know about the Processing Times page on the ESD website - that would have saved me a lot of anxiety when I was waiting. The reminder about continuing to file weekly claims is so important too. I almost stopped filing during my adjudication period because I thought "what's the point if I'm not getting paid anyway?" Glad I kept doing it though because you're absolutely right - you can't get retroactive payment for weeks you didn't claim.

I'm dealing with something similar right now - filed my claim about 10 days ago and it's been showing "adjudication" status the whole time. Reading through all these responses gives me hope that it will eventually move to pending and then paid like yours did! Quick question for everyone - when you were in adjudication, did ESD ever send you any letters or notifications explaining what they were reviewing? I haven't gotten anything in the mail yet and wondering if that's normal or if I should be concerned. Also keeping my fingers crossed that mine moves as quickly as yours did once it hits pending status!

Hey Mason! I'm new here but went through something similar recently. In my case, I didn't receive any letters during adjudication either - it seems like they only send mail if they need additional information from you or if there's a specific issue they're investigating. The fact that you haven't gotten anything yet is probably a good sign! My adjudication lasted about 2.5 weeks with no communication, then it suddenly switched to pending one day when I logged in. Just keep filing your weekly claims and checking your account regularly. The waiting is definitely nerve-wracking but it sounds like most people here eventually get through it!

As someone who just went through this exact same process a few months ago, I can confirm what others are saying - the change from adjudication to pending is definitely a positive step! My timeline was very similar to yours: filed initial claim, stuck in adjudication for about 2.5 weeks (which felt like forever), then moved to pending for 4 days before switching to paid status. The whole retroactive payment came through at once, which was such a relief. One thing I wish I had known during the waiting period is that you can set up text or email alerts in your eServices account to notify you when your claim status changes - it saved me from obsessively checking the website every few hours! Hang in there, sounds like you're almost at the finish line.

Thank you for sharing your timeline Emma! Setting up those alerts is such a smart tip - I had no idea that was even an option in the eServices account. I've been refreshing the page constantly which is probably not helping my stress levels. Going to set those up right now. It's so reassuring to hear from people who've been through the exact same process and came out the other side. The waiting really does feel endless when you're in it, but hearing that the retroactive payment all comes at once gives me hope. Fingers crossed I'll be posting good news like Abigail did soon!

This thread has been incredibly helpful for someone like me who's currently navigating the ESD system! I filed my claim about 6 weeks ago and went through a similar roller coaster - started in adjudication for what felt like forever, then moved to pending, and finally got paid last week. One thing I wanted to add that might help others is that if you're ever unsure about your claim status or have questions, you can also try reaching out through the ESD's secure messaging system in your eServices account. I found their responses were much faster than trying to get through on the phone (usually got a reply within 2-3 business days). It's under the "Contact ESD" section if anyone wants to try that route. The whole process is definitely stressful but reading success stories like yours makes such a difference for people still waiting!

Thanks for mentioning the secure messaging system! I had no idea that was available and have been dreading trying to call ESD after hearing horror stories about wait times. Just checked my eServices account and found the "Contact ESD" section - this is going to be so much better than sitting on hold for hours. Really appreciate you taking the time to share that tip along with your success story. It's amazing how much easier this whole process feels when you have people who've been through it sharing their knowledge!

I'm so glad I found this thread! I just filed my unemployment claim yesterday and I'm already anxious about what to expect. Reading through everyone's experiences here is really reassuring - it sounds like the adjudication to pending transition is actually a good thing, not something to worry about. I'm bookmarking this thread so I can refer back to it if my claim goes into adjudication. Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines and tips, especially about the text alerts and secure messaging system. It's really helpful to know what the normal process looks like and that there are ways to get information without having to spend hours on hold. Hoping my claim goes as smoothly as yours did Abigail!

Welcome to the community Zara! Filing yesterday means you're just at the beginning of the process, but you're already being smart by researching what to expect. One thing that helped me when I was new to this was keeping a simple log of my claim status each time I checked - just the date and what status showed. It helped me track the progression and gave me something concrete to refer back to when I was feeling anxious about whether things were moving forward. Also don't be surprised if your claim doesn't show any status changes for the first few days after filing - that seems to be normal processing time. Good luck with your claim!

I'm completely new to the unemployment system and this thread has been incredibly educational! I haven't filed a claim yet but I'm expecting to need to soon due to layoffs at my company. Reading through everyone's experiences here has really helped me understand what the different statuses mean and what to expect. The progression from adjudication to pending to paid makes so much more sense now, and I love all the practical tips people have shared - especially about setting up alerts, using secure messaging, and keeping a status log. It's reassuring to see a community where people actually help each other navigate this confusing system. I'm saving this thread for future reference and hopefully when I do file, my experience will be as positive as most of the stories shared here!

Adrian, you're being really smart by researching this ahead of time! I wish I had found threads like this before I filed my claim - it would have saved me so much anxiety during the waiting periods. One tip I'd add for when you do file: make sure you have all your employment documentation organized beforehand (pay stubs, separation notice, etc.) because having everything ready can help prevent delays that might lead to adjudication in the first place. Also, if layoffs are happening at your company, you might want to ask HR if they have any specific paperwork or codes they provide for unemployment claims - sometimes that can streamline the process. Hope you won't need to use this information, but it's great that you're prepared!

I'm new to this community but wanted to share my recent experience since it might help others in similar situations. I just went through this exact same process about a month ago - filed my claim, went into adjudication for about 3 weeks (which was terrifying), then switched to pending for 5 days before finally getting paid. The retroactive payment covered all the weeks I had claimed, which was such a huge relief. One thing that really helped my anxiety during the waiting period was calling the ESD customer service line early in the morning (around 8:05 AM right when they open) - I actually got through on my second try and the representative was able to confirm that my case was progressing normally even though I couldn't see any updates online. She told me that adjudication to pending is definitely a positive step and means they've resolved whatever issue was being reviewed. Hang in there - it sounds like you're almost at the finish line!
