ESD adjudication in process for 3 weeks - when will payment come through?
I'm really starting to stress out about my finances. Applied for unemployment benefits after getting laid off from my restaurant job (they're closing 5 locations statewide) and it's been sitting in 'adjudication in process' status for about 3 weeks now. I submitted all the requested documents right away - employment verification, separation notice, everything they asked for. My eServices account doesn't show any issues that need addressing or additional info they need from me. All my weekly claims show 'pending' with no payment dates. I've got rent due next week and barely enough to cover it. How long does this adjudication process typically take? Anyone been through this recently? Is there something I should be doing that I'm missing? Starting to worry that I messed something up in my application.

•Thanks for giving me some hope. Did you do anything to move it along or just wait? 5 weeks feels like forever when bills are piling up.

Adjudication can unfortunately take anywhere from 3-6 weeks right now. ESD has to verify all your employment information and the reason for separation. Since you mentioned a restaurant closing locations, they're probably verifying with your employer that it was a legitimate layoff. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the initial determination. Those will process automatically once adjudication is complete, and you'll receive all back payments you're eligible for. One important thing: check your Secure Message Center in eServices daily. Sometimes they send requests for additional information there, and if you miss responding to those, it can further delay your claim.

•Thank you for the detailed response. I've been filing weekly claims religiously and checking messages daily. Nothing there requesting more info... just silence. It's the not knowing that's driving me crazy.

THEY ARE DELIBERATELY SLOW!! They hope people give up. I waited 8 weeks last year, and when I called they said 'oh we were missing a document' but NEVER notified me! The whole system is designed to frustrate people into giving up on benefits they DESERVE!

•That's not entirely accurate. While the system can be frustrating, adjudication backlogs are usually due to staffing limitations rather than intentional delays. ESD processes thousands of claims daily, and complex situations require manual review by adjudicators.

I was in the exact same boat last month. After 4 weeks of waiting and getting nowhere with the regular phone line (always busy or disconnected), I used a service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual ESD agent. Worth every penny - the agent told me my claim was just sitting there waiting for review and they escalated it. Got approved three days later. Check out their video demo: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 or website claimyr.com if you're desperate to speak with someone.

•I've never heard of this service before. Did you really get through to someone? I've called like 20 times and either get disconnected or wait forever only to be told they can't help me right now.

Did you have any earnings during the weeks you've filed? Sometimes that can trigger additional review. Also check if your employer is contesting the claim - that automatically sends it to adjudication. You can call the claims center and specifically ask if your former employer is contesting the separation reason.

•No earnings since being laid off. I was actually on good terms with my manager - they had to close several locations due to rising costs. I didn't think they'd contest it, but maybe corporate is handling things differently than my direct manager? That's a good point.

•"Understaffed" is ALWAYS their excuse! They've been "understaffed" for literal YEARS! Maybe if they spent less money on fancy new websites and more on ACTUAL STAFF this wouldn't be a problem!!!

Update: I just spoke with an ESD representative this morning about a different matter, and they mentioned they're currently prioritizing adjudication cases that are 4+ weeks old. So you might see movement on your claim very soon if you're already at the 3-week mark. Also, they said many restaurant industry claims from recent closures are being processed in batches, which can sometimes be faster once they start working through them. Since you mentioned your employer closed multiple locations, there's a good chance yours will be handled as part of a batch review.

•That's really helpful information! Gives me some hope that I might see movement soon. I'll give it another week before I really start panicking. Appreciate the insider info.

I went through adjudication last November when my contract ended. Here's what worked for me: 1. Continue filing weekly claims without fail 2. Check your Secure Message Center daily 3. If you reach the 4-week mark with no update, call first thing Monday morning (7:30am precisely) when wait times are shortest 4. Have your claim ID and last 4 of SSN ready when you call 5. Be very specific that you're inquiring about adjudication status, not just checking on your claim For me, the adjudicator actually called once they picked up my case, asked a few questions about my employment separation, and approved it on the spot. I had all my backpay within 48 hours after that call.

•adding to this good advice - if u can't get thru by phone (i never could), try the technical support line. sometimes they can see whats happening with ur claim even if they cant fix it

Is this your first time on unemployment? That often takes longer. Also make sure you're doing your required job search activities (3 per week) and documenting them properly, or your weekly claims won't be valid once adjudication is complete.

•Yes, first time applying. I've been doing the job search activities and logging them in the system. Applied to like 15 places already, had one interview but no offers yet. Hoping something comes through soon on either front.

UPDATE: My claim was finally approved! Just logged in this morning and saw my status changed from adjudication to paid. All 4 weeks of backpay are scheduled for deposit tomorrow. They never contacted me or asked for anything additional - it just suddenly processed. For anyone else waiting, hang in there! And thanks everyone for your advice and support.

•That's great news! Glad to hear it worked out. Did you end up needing to contact them or did it just process on its own?

•It just processed on its own - never heard from an adjudicator or had to provide anything else. Just woke up to a different status in my account. Maybe they really are processing in batches like someone mentioned!
