ESD adjudication taking forever - filed May 29 and still waiting

I applied for unemployment on May 29th after getting laid off from my warehouse job (budget cuts, ugh). My claim has been stuck in 'adjudication in progress' for almost a month now! I check the ESD website every single day and nothing changes. Still the same status. I've called at least 15 times but either get disconnected or told the wait time is over 2 hours. I'm seriously stressing out because my rent is due next week ($1,750) and I barely have enough for groceries. My landlord isn't exactly the understanding type either. Has anyone else dealt with adjudication taking this long? Is there anything I can do to speed this up or at least find out what the holdup is? I'm really at my wit's end here.

4-8 WEEKS?? Are you kidding me?? I can't wait that long! Do you know if there's any way to check exactly what they're investigating or get some kind of emergency payment while I wait?

Sorry you're going through this. Adjudication can definitely be frustrating. The ESD is reviewing some aspect of your claim that raised a flag in their system - could be your separation reason, your work history, or even just a data verification issue. Unfortunately, standard adjudication timeframes are currently 4-6 weeks in Washington state. A few suggestions that might help: 1. Check your ESD online account for any alerts or messages requiring a response 2. Make sure you continue filing your weekly claims even while waiting 3. Look for any letters from ESD in your mail or online account that might explain what they're investigating 4. Try calling right when they open (7:00 AM) as that's usually when wait times are shortest And don't lose hope - most claims do eventually get approved, and you'll receive backpay for all eligible weeks once they resolve the issue.

Thank you for the detailed reply. I have been filing weekly claims religiously and double-checking my messages. There's nothing there explaining what they're investigating. I'll try calling right at 7AM tomorrow, though I've tried early morning calls before without much luck.

I feel your pain!! My claim was stuck in adjudication for 7 WEEKS last year. It was pure hell, and ESD doesn't care at all about people suffering. I ended up having to borrow money from family just to keep my lights on. The system is BROKEN!!! And don't bother with the callback option - I waited 3 days for a callback and then they hung up after 10 seconds.

Adjudication delays can be extremely stressful, especially when bills are piling up. While the standard processing time can be several weeks, there are a few strategies that might help: 1. Continue filing your weekly claims without fail 2. Check if you qualify for hardship assistance - contact your local WorkSource office as they sometimes know about emergency funds 3. Consider reaching out to local non-profits like Catholic Community Services or St. Vincent de Paul who may offer rental assistance 4. I had success getting through to an ESD agent using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a service that helps you skip the phone queue. There's a video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. It's what finally helped me resolve my adjudication issue after weeks of waiting. 5. If you're truly facing eviction, mention this when you do reach ESD as they can sometimes expedite claims in true hardship situations Don't give up - while the system can be frustrating, most legitimate claims do get approved eventually.

Thank you for all these suggestions! I hadn't heard about reaching out to WorkSource for hardship assistance - I'll definitely look into that tomorrow. And I just checked out that Claimyr video. Has anyone else used this service? It looks promising but I'm hesitant to try something new when I'm already stressed about my claim.

My sister works at an employment office (not ESD but deals with them). She says always check if theres a fact-finding interview scheduled. Sometimes they send notification but it gets lost or goes to spam or whatever. Missing that interview can add MONTHS to adjudication. Look in your online account really carefully and search your email for anything from esd.wa.gov

I just double-checked all my emails (including spam) and my ESD account notifications. Nothing about a fact-finding interview. But that's a good tip - I'll make sure to keep checking daily in case they schedule something.

I was stuck in adjudication for 5 weeks back in March. I finally called my state representative's office and explained my situation. Their constituent services person contacted ESD on my behalf, and miraculously my claim was approved three days later. Might be worth trying if you're really in a bind with rent coming due.

This is excellent advice. Your state representatives often have liaisons who can help navigate state agencies like ESD. You can find your representatives at leg.wa.gov by entering your address. Just remember to be polite and concise when explaining your situation to their office staff.

I never would have thought of contacting my state rep! I'll look mine up right now. Seriously, thank you for this suggestion.

Really? I've been skeptical of these services. Did they ask for a ton of personal info or anything weird? I'm desperate but also paranoid lol

Just wanted to add: while you're waiting, please make sure you're meeting your job search requirements (3 documented activities per week). I've seen people get disqualified for benefits because they didn't maintain their job search during adjudication, then had to start the whole process over again. Document everything carefully in your weekly claims or in WorkSource WA.

Thanks for the reminder. I've been applying to at least 4-5 jobs per week and keeping screenshots of everything. The last thing I need is to finally get through adjudication only to be disqualified for something else.

did u check if ur employer is contesting ur claim? that makes adjudication take way longer

I'm not sure - how would I find that out? My former supervisor seemed supportive when I told him I was applying for unemployment, but who knows what HR is doing.

Good news is that once adjudication is complete, you'll receive all back payments for eligible weeks at once. I know that doesn't help with immediate bills, but at least you'll eventually receive what you're entitled to. If your situation becomes dire while waiting, call 211 for referrals to emergency assistance programs in your area.

Thanks for the reminder about 211. I might need to use that resource if I can't get this resolved soon. At least knowing the backpay will eventually come is some comfort, though my landlord won't be as understanding.
