Stuck in ESD adjudication since August 9th - four claims pending and bills piling up

I'm seriously starting to panic here. Filed my initial unemployment claim on August 6th and my account shows I've been stuck in adjudication since August 9th. It's now been over a month and I've got FOUR weekly claims all showing as pending payment. My savings are completely drained and I've got rent, car payment, and utilities all coming due next week. Has anyone else had their claim stuck in adjudication this long? Did you eventually get paid? I've tried calling ESD at least 30 times but can never get through to an actual person. Just keep getting the 'high call volume' message and then disconnected. Any advice on how to break through this nightmare would be so appreciated... I'm literally losing sleep over this.

6 weeks?! Omg that's terrifying. Have you been able to reach anyone at all? I'm worried they found some issue with my claim but won't tell me what it is.

Adjudication is unfortunately one of the slowest parts of the ESD process. It means they're investigating something about your claim - could be employer verification, earnings discrepancy, job separation reason, or availability for work issues. The standard timeline they tell people is 3-6 weeks, but many claims are taking 8-10 weeks right now due to backlog. Keep filing your weekly claims even while in adjudication. When they finally resolve it, if approved, you'll get all back payments at once. In the meantime, you may want to look into emergency assistance programs through DSHS or local community action agencies to help with bills.

Thank you for this info! Do you know if there's any way to find out WHAT they're investigating? My separation was pretty straightforward - company downsizing with official layoff notices. I'm worried there's some mistake that I could clear up if I could just talk to someone.

when i was in adjudication last year i couldnt figure out why and then finally got thru and found out my former boss was claiming i quit instead of being laid off!!! make sure u keep calling because sometimes employers lie to avoid their UI rates going up

I've been an unemployment advocate for three years, and adjudication delays are definitely frustrating but normal in the system. Here's what you need to know: 1) Adjudication is triggered by various factors - sometimes it's automatic flags in the system, employer responses, or earnings verification issues. 2) You CAN see what's causing the adjudication if you look at your notices in eServices. Go to your dashboard, click on "Notices/Letters" and look for anything titled "Fact Finding" or "Request for Information." These will tell you exactly what issue they're investigating. 3) You absolutely should respond to any pending fact-finding questionnaires ASAP if you haven't already. Many people miss these and it extends adjudication significantly. 4) The most reliable way to check status is to actually speak with an ESD agent, but as you've discovered, that's incredibly difficult right now.

This is incredibly helpful! I just checked my notices and there IS a fact-finding questionnaire from August 11th that I completely missed. It's asking about my availability for work since I mentioned in my application that I'm taking an online class. I'll fill this out right away. Do you think this will speed things up once I submit it?

Yes! Responding to that fact-finding questionnaire should definitely help move things along. The system was waiting for your response this whole time. Make sure to emphasize that your class schedule doesn't interfere with your ability to accept full-time work (assuming that's true). After you submit it, give it about a week, and then you should try reaching an agent to confirm they received it and to ask if there's anything else needed to resolve the adjudication.

I was stuck in adjudication hell for 7 weeks earlier this year, it was AWFUL. Couldn't get anyone on the phone no matter how many times I called. I finally found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an ESD rep in about 20 minutes after weeks of trying on my own. They basically wait on hold for you and then call you when they get an agent. I was super skeptical but it actually worked - the rep I spoke with cleared up my adjudication issue right away once I explained my situation. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 if you want to see how it works. Seriously saved my sanity and probably my credit score too.

UPDATE: I submitted the fact-finding questionnaire and also managed to get through to ESD this morning! The agent confirmed they received my response and said my adjudication should be resolved within 5-7 business days. Such a relief! Turns out I wasn't disqualified or anything - they just needed to verify my class schedule doesn't interfere with work availability. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!

That's great news! This is actually a very common adjudication issue - the "able and available" requirement gets flagged whenever someone mentions school or training. Glad you got it resolved and should be getting paid soon. Remember to keep submitting your weekly claims while waiting for the final approval.

The ESD system is DESIGNED to be difficult to navigate. They WANT people to give up so they don't have to pay out benefits. I've been through 3 claims over the years and every single time they find some ridiculous reason to put you in adjudication. Last time they claimed I didn't provide enough job search evidence even though I uploaded everything correctly!!! Took 12 weeks and threatening to contact my state representative before they finally paid me what they owed. The whole system is broken and nobody in Olympia seems to care.

i don't think its a conspiracy but ya the system is definitely outdated. my friend works at dshs and says esd is using computer systems from like 1995 lol

FINAL UPDATE: My claim was approved today and all my pending payments were released! $4,870 total for the 4 weeks. Such a massive relief. For anyone else stuck in adjudication, definitely check your notices for any fact-finding questionnaires and make sure to respond to those ASAP. That was the main holdup for me. Thank you all again for your advice and support during this stressful time!
