Stuck in ESD adjudication for 3 months while showing as disqualified - can't reach anyone!

I'm at my wits' end with this ESD nightmare! I filed my initial unemployment claim back in late January after my construction job shut down unexpectedly. Every single week since then, I've been filing my weekly claims like clockwork, but my payment status keeps showing as 'disqualified' even though my online portal says my claim is in adjudication. It's been THREE WHOLE MONTHS now! I thought adjudication was supposed to take like 3-4 weeks max, not 12+ weeks! I've called the ESD number probably 50+ times, tried different times of day, different days of the week - nothing works. Either busy signal, disconnected, or stuck on hold until it hangs up on me. My savings are completely drained, and I'm about to miss my second rent payment. Has anyone actually managed to get through to a real human being at ESD lately? Or is there some secret trick to getting past this adjudication limbo? Please help before I lose my apartment!

Your situation is unfortunately pretty common right now. ESD adjudication is taking much longer than the 3-4 weeks they claim - I've seen many cases taking 2-3 months in 2025. The fact that it shows 'disqualified' while still in adjudication is actually normal (though confusing). It means they haven't made a final decision yet. The system defaults to disqualified until they complete the review. What's likely happening is they're investigating something about your claim that needs verification - possibly your job separation reason, identity verification, or work history. Keep filing your weekly claims! If they eventually approve you, you'll get all those weeks paid retroactively.

Thanks for explaining that! I had no idea 'disqualified' could just be a temporary default status. That gives me a little hope. Any tips on actually reaching someone? I've tried morning, afternoon, evening calls - nothing works!

Make sure you're spelling it 'adjudication' not 'adjadication' when searching for information online. That might help you find more resources. And yes, the wait times in 2025 are definitely worse than previous years. ESD claims volume is up 23% compared to this time last year.

I was stuck in adjudication for 2 months with the same 'disqualified' status showing. Calling ESD was completely useless - I'd get disconnected after waiting on hold for hours. What finally worked for me was using Claimyr to get through to an agent. It basically keeps dialing for you until it gets through their phone system, then connects you. Cost me a bit but was totally worth it to finally get answers. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 showing how it works. The agent I spoke with found that my employer had contested my claim but never submitted documentation, which was holding everything up.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. Just looked at the video and it seems pretty straightforward. Did you have to wait long once they got you through?

DONT WASTE YOUR TIME CALLING!!! The whole system is BROKEN and those ESD people dont even answer phones anymore!!! My cousin works for the state (not ESD) and she said they are MONTHS behind on claims! Just file an appeal even though youre in adjudication - that will force them to look at your claim faster!!! Thats what I did and got paid in 2 weeks after waiting 3 months in stupid adjudication!!!

This is actually incorrect advice. Filing an appeal while still in adjudication can create duplicate processes in the system and potentially delay your claim further. An appeal is only appropriate after you've received an official determination letter stating you're disqualified with a specific reason code. The system showing 'disqualified' while in adjudication is different from receiving an official disqualification determination.

No, I haven't! That's a great idea. Do you just email the representative for your district? Did they respond quickly?

To answer your question about wait times after using Claimyr - once I got connected to an actual ESD agent, I only waited about 5 minutes. The agent explained that my claim had a flag on it because my former employer contested it claiming I quit (I didn't - they eliminated my position). The agent was able to see exactly where my claim was stuck and told me what documents I needed to submit to move it forward. Without that call, I might still be waiting.

That's really helpful info. I'm wondering if my employer said something that's holding things up too. I was laid off with a bunch of other workers when the project funding fell through, but maybe there's some miscommunication happening. I'm definitely going to try getting through to an actual human somehow.

Adjudication is taking way longer than usual these days. I finally got through to ESD last week after trying for almost a month, and the agent told me they're dealing with a 250% increase in claims plus they implemented a new fraud detection system that's flagging more claims for review. My advice based on what worked for me: 1. Keep filing your weekly claims no matter what 2. Check your ESD online account dashboard daily for any new messages or tasks 3. Look for a section called 'Upload Documents' and see if they're requesting anything 4. Check your spam folder for emails from ESD 5. If you've uploaded any identity documents, call the ESD identity verification line (different from the main line) early morning right when they open The disqualified status with pending adjudication just means they haven't made a decision yet. If they eventually approve you, you'll get backpay for all those weeks.

This is super helpful, thank you! I've been checking my online account but haven't noticed an 'Upload Documents' section - I'll look again more carefully. Where do I find the identity verification line number? Is it different from the main ESD number?

The identity verification line is 833-572-8400, which is different from the main ESD claims center. Call exactly at 8:00 AM when they open for the best chance of getting through. Regarding your situation, I'd recommend also checking if your employer has contested your claim. Since you mentioned it was a construction job shutdown, there could be confusion if it was a temporary layoff vs. permanent separation. This often triggers adjudication. The other commenters are correct that 'disqualified' is the default status during adjudication - it doesn't mean you've been permanently disqualified. Keep filing weekly claims and if approved, you'll receive all back payments. For the record, current ESD statistics show adjudication is taking an average of 10-12 weeks in 2025, so your experience is unfortunately within the current expected timeframe.

Thank you so much for the verification line number! I'll try calling them right at 8 AM tomorrow. You're right, it was technically a 'temporary' layoff but they told us it would be at least 6-8 months before they secure new projects, which is why I filed for unemployment. Maybe that's causing confusion in the system.

I've been checking messages daily, but there's nothing there asking for documents. It just shows my initial claim was received and then that it's in adjudication. So frustrating!

After reading through this thread, I think your best options are: 1. Try the identity verification line that was shared (833-572-8400) first thing in the morning 2. Reach out to your state representative as suggested 3. Consider a service like Claimyr if the first two options don't work One other thing to check - log into your SAW (SecureAccess Washington) account, then go to eServices, and look specifically for any alerts or tasks in the 'Decision Status' section. Sometimes requirements get buried in there. Also, under 'Upload Documents,' there might be document requests even if you didn't receive a notification. ESD's notification system has been notoriously unreliable in 2025.

Thanks for summarizing! I've been focusing on the main dashboard but haven't dug into those specific sections. I'll check the Decision Status section right now. Really appreciate everyone's help here - it's been more useful than anything I've found on the ESD website!
