Stuck in ESD limbo - weeks in adjudication, now all weeks showing 'pending' with no decision
I'm seriously at my wit's end dealing with ESD. My claim was in adjudication for weeks, and now suddenly ALL my weeks switched to 'pending' status with zero explanation. It's been FIVE WEEKS already with no decision in sight! Every single time I try calling, the system automatically disconnects me after going through all the menu options. I've tried morning, afternoon, different days - nothing works! I've got bills piling up and rent due next week. Has anyone actually managed to get through to a real person at ESD lately? Any tricks or specific times that work better? I'm desperate for any advice on how to actually speak to someone who can tell me what's happening with my claim!

The same thing happened to me back in January. My claim was in adjudication for about 3 weeks, then suddenly switched to pending for all weeks. In my case, it meant they were reviewing some additional information they needed before making a decision. Try sending a message through your eServices account specifically asking about the status change from adjudication to pending - sometimes they actually respond to those within a few days.

•Thanks for the tip about eServices messaging. I sent one last week but haven't heard anything. Did you get paid eventually without having to talk to someone on the phone? I'm worried they'll deny me without ever giving me a chance to explain my situation.

ugh ESD is the WORST!!! i've been thru this 2x now and the only way i finally got a real person was by calling right at 8:00:00 am EXACTLY when they open. not 8:01, not 7:59. exactly 8am. and have all ur info ready cuz they'll hang up if u take too long. good luck!!

•This doesnt always work either. Ive tried the 8am trick for 2 weeks straight and still get disconnected. Its like they just have a random system that lets some people through and disconnects everyone else lol

When your claim shifts from adjudication to pending, it typically means the adjudicator has completed their initial review and made a recommendation, but it's now waiting for final approval before payment can be released. This is actually a positive sign in the ESD process flow. For your situation, I recommend three specific actions: 1. Continue filing your weekly claims without interruption 2. Check your "Notices/Letters" section in eServices daily - decisions are often posted there before the status updates 3. If you received any questionnaires during adjudication, verify all were completed and submitted The switch to pending usually means you're getting closer to resolution, though I understand how frustrating the wait can be.

•Thank you for explaining what 'pending' actually means - that does make me feel a bit better. I've been filing every week religiously and double-checked all my questionnaires are submitted. I haven't seen anything new in my notices section yet, but I'll keep checking daily. Really appreciate the detailed info!

I had a similar issue last month and wasted HOURS trying to get through on the phone with no luck. I finally tried Claimyr (claimyr.com) after seeing it recommended here, and they got me connected to an ESD agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The agent I spoke with was able to tell me exactly why my claim was stuck (missing employer response) and what I needed to do. Totally worth it after weeks of frustration.

•I hadn't heard of this service before. I'm getting desperate enough to try anything at this point. Did the ESD agent seem annoyed that you used a service to get through instead of waiting?

•Not at all! The agent was actually really helpful. They just answered my questions like normal. I think they understand how impossible it is to get through right now. The agent told me they're severely understaffed and the phone system can't handle the volume.

my brother in law works for a different state agency and he says ESD is short staffed by like 40% right now so thats why nobody can get thru. he said they prioritize claims that have been waiting longest so just hang tight and youll probably get a decision soon. but yeah the phone thing is a joke, ive never gotten thru in 3 tries

I think there's some confusion about what 'pending' actually means in the ESD system. When a claim moves from adjudication to pending, it doesn't necessarily mean your claim is approved - it's just in a different queue. In my experience as someone who's gone through multiple unemployment claims in Washington, 'pending' can mean several things: 1. Your adjudication is complete and they're preparing payment 2. They're waiting for additional documentation from you or your employer 3. They've made a decision but it's in the queue for final processing The most important thing is checking your determination letters in eServices - that's where the actual decision will show up. The status change itself doesn't tell you much. As for contacting them, the phone system is programmed to disconnect if their queue is full, which is why you keep getting hung up on. If you absolutely need to speak with someone, try contacting your state representative - they often have dedicated ESD liaisons who can check on claims.

•I had no idea about contacting state representatives! That's a great suggestion I hadn't thought of. And thanks for clarifying about the pending status - I've been obsessively checking my determination letters section but nothing new yet. I'll try reaching out to my rep tomorrow.

did u try calling the offshore call center?? its different than the main number and sometimes u can actually get someone there. they cant fix everything but they can at least see whats happening with ur claim. i think the number was like 833-something

•The offshore call center is 833-572-8400. They can see basic claim info but can't make any changes or decisions. Sometimes they can submit an escalation ticket though, which might help.

UPDATE: For anyone facing this specific situation (claim moving from adjudication to pending), I just spoke with an ESD supervisor who explained the current process. As of 2025, they've changed their workflow so that claims are marked as "pending" during final review after adjudication. The average wait time after this status change is 7-10 business days for a decision to be issued. The supervisor specifically said NOT to call repeatedly during this pending period as it doesn't speed up the process and just overloads their phone system. Instead, watch your Notices/Letters section in eServices for the determination letter. What will help: Make sure you continue filing weekly claims during this period so that once approved, payment can be issued immediately for all eligible weeks.

•Thank you so much for this update! This is exactly the kind of specific information I was hoping for. So I should expect to wait about 7-10 more business days from when it changed to pending? That at least gives me a timeline to work with. I'll keep filing weekly and watch for the determination letter.
