Stuck in ESD adjudication for 4+ weeks with pregnant wife & family - no response from anyone!

I'm at my wit's end with this ESD nightmare. Been stuck in adjudication for OVER FOUR WEEKS now with absolutely zero progress. We have a family of four to support plus my wife is pregnant, and not a single dollar has come through yet (and yes, I know that first week doesn't count). We've tried EVERYTHING to contact ESD: - Calling right when they open at 8am ➡️ automated system hangs up due to "high call volume" - Calling throughout different times of day ➡️ same result, immediate disconnect - Submitted TWO messages through the eServices portal ➡️ complete silence, no response - All documentation is submitted and complete - No pending requests showing on our account - We're faithfully filing weekly claims as required Meanwhile bills are piling up, and we have no income. What exactly is happening during this "adjudication" process that takes so long? Is there ANY way to actually speak to a human being at ESD? This feels like being trapped in some Kafka-esque bureaucratic nightmare. Has anyone successfully gotten through this?

I went through this exact situation last fall. The adjudication process is where they verify the reason for your separation from employment, and unfortunately, it can take 4-6 weeks even when there aren't any issues. The system is truly broken. Here's what finally worked for me: 1. Contact your state representative's office. They have special channels to ESD and can often get movement on stalled claims. Google "[your county] WA state representative" and email or call their office explaining your hardship situation. 2. Make sure you've uploaded all possible documentation related to your separation in the document upload section, even if they haven't specifically requested it. 3. Check if you have any alerts in your eServices account that might not be obvious - sometimes there are questions pending that don't trigger notifications. Don't give up on the weekly claims! When it finally processes, you'll get paid for all those weeks at once.

Thank you for these suggestions. I hadn't thought about contacting my state rep! I just checked my eServices account again and there are definitely no alerts or pending questions - it just says "adjudication in progress" with no other details. I'll try reaching out to my representative today. Hoping we don't have to wait the full 6 weeks with a baby on the way.

I was in adjudication for 7 WEEKS last year and it was absolute hell. The system is designed to be impossible to contact anyone. Have you tried the trick where you call and instead of selecting unemployment options, you choose the employer option? Sometimes that gets you through to an actual person who can then transfer you.

7 weeks?! That's terrifying. I'll try the employer option tomorrow morning. At this point I'll try anything. Did they eventually resolve your claim without you having to do anything special, or did you have to fight to get it processed?

Mine eventually got resolved, but only after I reached out to my state representative. The ESD suddenly became very responsive after that. They backpaid everything I was owed, but only after I made enough noise. The squeaky wheel gets the grease with these bureaucrats.

I finally got through to ESD last month using Claimyr after weeks of trying the regular number. It's a service that holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration! I watched their demo video (https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3) and was skeptical but it actually worked. You can check them out at claimyr.com - totally worth it when you're desperate to talk to a real person at ESD.

Is this legit? Seems sketchy to pay for something that should be free. Did they actually help resolve your issue or just connect you?

It's just a connection service - they don't have special access to ESD beyond getting you through the phone system. But talking to an actual claims specialist is what solved my problem. The ESD rep was able to see that my adjudication was complete but hadn't been properly processed in their system. They fixed it while I was on the phone.

ESD adjudication specialist here. This wait time is unfortunately common right now. Adjudication is where we investigate the circumstances of your job separation to determine eligibility. While I can't speak to your specific case, some things that can help: 1. Make sure you answer your phone even if you don't recognize the number. Adjudicators often call from blocked numbers, and we generally only try twice before sending the case back to the queue. 2. Double-check that your contact information is current in the system. 3. If you're experiencing extreme hardship (which it sounds like you are), there's a hardship expedition request you can submit. This won't guarantee immediate processing but can move you up in the queue. You have to specifically request this through the message portal with "HARDSHIP REQUEST" in the subject line. 4. Sometimes adjudication gets stuck when we're waiting on information from your former employer. If they don't respond, we continue after a certain period, but it adds time. Keep filing weekly claims as you've been doing, and all eligible weeks will be paid once adjudication completes.

Thank you for this insider information. I had no idea about the hardship expedition request! I'll submit that right away. We haven't received any calls from unknown/blocked numbers, so I don't think we've missed them. My former employer confirmed they've already submitted all the requested information weeks ago. Is there any way to check if ESD actually received it?

Unfortunately, there's no way for claimants to check the status of employer responses directly. The hardship request should help, but if you still don't see movement within a week after submitting it, that's when I'd recommend either the state representative route or finding a way to speak directly with a claims specialist who can see notes on your file that aren't visible in the claimant portal.

have u tried working agency jobs while waiting? i did that during my adjudacation period and it helped with bills. just remeber to report any earnings on ur weekly claims. temp jobs don't affect ur unemployment eligibility as long as its temporary work.

That's actually a good suggestion. I've been applying for full-time positions but hadn't considered temp work. I'll look into some agencies today. At least it would bring in something while we wait for this mess to resolve.

Quick update on my earlier comment - I forgot to mention that WorkSource offices can sometimes help escalate adjudication issues. They don't have direct access to your claim details, but they have internal communication channels with ESD that regular claimants don't. If you can visit a physical WorkSource location, bring your claim ID and ask if they can help check on the status of your adjudication. Sometimes they can spot issues or expedite things.

There's a WorkSource office about 20 minutes from me. I'll try visiting them tomorrow. At this point I'm willing to try anything! Thanks for the suggestion.

worksource is hit or miss, the one near me couldn't do ANYTHING to help with my claim but my friend went to a different office and they fixed her issue same day. depends who you get i guess

Just wanted to say I'm really sorry you and your family are going through this. The system is absolutely broken, and it's infuriating that there's no clear communication during adjudication. Have you looked into emergency assistance programs while you wait? Most counties have emergency rental assistance and food banks that don't have the same wait times as ESD.

Thank you for the empathy - it really does help just knowing we're not alone in this frustration. We've contacted our local food bank already, which has been helpful. I wasn't aware of emergency rental assistance though - I'll look that up for our county today. Every little bit helps right now.

I just went thru this nightmare!!!! What finally worked for me was emailing my state senator AND representative on the same day explaining my hardship (I was about to be evicted). Got a call from ESD within 48 hours after WEEKS of nothing!!! The lady said my claim was just sitting there basically waiting to be assigned to an adjudicator. So frustrating!!! They backdated everything once it was approved though. Hang in there and DEFINITELY contact your elected officials!!!

Wow, that's both encouraging and infuriating to hear! Just sitting there waiting to be assigned?! I've already emailed my representative this morning after seeing the earlier suggestion. I'll add my state senator to the list too. Did you just find their contact info on the state legislature website?

0 coins

Yes!! Just Google "WA state legislature find my representatives" and put in your address. Email BOTH your representatives and your senator. I literally got a call from ESD within 2 days after emailing them when I'd been waiting for almost 7 weeks before that!
