Stuck in ESD adjudication for 8 weeks with no explanation or payments - what can I do?

I'm seriously at my wits' end with ESD right now. I've been filing my weekly claims religiously for 8 WEEKS STRAIGHT and haven't received a single payment. My account shows multiple items in "Adjudication" but doesn't explain what they're even investigating! I managed to get through on the phone after a 3-hour wait two weeks ago, and the agent basically told me there's no one in the adjudication department I could speak with. Seriously???? Nobody has contacted me about needing additional documentation or information. I have no idea what's wrong or how to fix it. Meanwhile, I've been submitting WAY more than the required 3 job search activities each week (probably 8-10 applications weekly), but the job market is absolutely brutal in my field right now. I'm drowning financially. Rent is due in 5 days, and I've already maxed out my credit cards just trying to buy groceries. Does adjudication always take this long? Is there ANY way to contact someone who can actually help? I'm desperate for advice here.

This is unfortunately pretty common with ESD right now. Adjudication can take anywhere from 2-12 weeks, but 8 weeks without any communication is definitely on the extreme end. Here are a few things you can try: 1. Contact your state representative's office - they often have liaisons who can escalate ESD issues 2. Submit a message through your eServices portal specifically asking what documents they need for adjudication 3. Check if you have any alerts or messages in your eServices dashboard that might indicate what's causing the hold 4. Make sure your identity verification is complete (if they asked for it) The system is frustrating, but don't give up. Also, keep doing your job search activities and filing weekly - if approved, you'll get paid retroactively for all those weeks.

Thank you for these suggestions! I didn't even think about contacting my state rep. Do you know how long that usually takes to get a response? The identity verification might be the issue - I did upload my driver's license when I first applied but never got confirmation that it was accepted or rejected.

same thing hapend to me last month!!! i waited 6 weeks in ajudication and then they just denied me without any explanation. try checking ur correspondance folder in eservices, sometimes they send letters asking for info but dont email u about it. the whole system is rigged if u ask me.

This! I had THREE letters in my correspondence folder that I never knew about because they didn't notify me. By the time I found them, the deadline to respond had passed and I had to appeal. Check that folder immediately!

I was stuck in adjudication for 10 weeks earlier this year, and the only thing that finally worked was using Claimyr to get through to an ESD agent. It's a service that basically holds your place in line so you don't have to sit on hold for hours. I was super skeptical at first, but it worked surprisingly well - got through to an actual human in about 20 minutes who could see exactly what was holding up my claim. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The agent I spoke with was able to expedite my adjudication by noting I was facing financial hardship. Got my first payment about a week later. Might be worth trying since you've already waited 8 weeks.

I've heard of Claimyr but wasn't sure if it was legit. Did they need a bunch of personal info? I'm always wary of third party services when it comes to unemployment stuff.

They just need your phone number so they can connect you with ESD. It's basically just a calling service - they don't access your ESD account or anything like that. The ESD agent I talked to said they've been getting a lot of calls through them lately since it's so hard to get through otherwise.

Let me clarify a few things about adjudication that might help: Adjudication happens when there's a question about your eligibility. Common reasons include: - Separation issues (were you fired, quit, laid off?) - Availability for work concerns - Income reporting discrepancies - Identity verification issues You mentioned nobody has contacted you, but have you checked your Correspondence folder in eServices? ESD often sends letters there without email notifications. Also check your spam folder. For immediate financial help while waiting, contact your local WorkSource office about emergency assistance programs. They can sometimes provide rent assistance or other support even while your UI claim is pending. And yes, definitely contact your state representative as someone else suggested. They can often get answers from ESD much faster than you can on your own.

I just checked my Correspondence folder and found THREE letters from ESD! They were asking for details about my last job separation from a month ago. The deadline to respond was last week. I'm freaking out now - does this mean my claim is automatically denied??

Don't panic! Call ESD immediately and explain you just found the letters. They can often reopen the request if you call. Make sure to have all your separation details ready (last day worked, reason for separation, any documentation). This is exactly why your claim is stuck - they're waiting on this information. Be persistent about getting through to someone who can help you respond to those requests even though the deadline passed.

THE ESD SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY BROKEN!!!! I was in adjudication for TWELVE WEEKS with zero communication, then got denied because they claimed I "didn't respond" to requests I never received. Had to appeal to OAH and wait ANOTHER 6 weeks just to get a hearing. The whole time I couldn't pay rent and nearly became homeless. You need to BOMBARD them with calls every single day until someone helps you. That's literally the only way. Their "we'll call you back" system is a JOKE - they NEVER call back. And those adjudicators? They exist, the agents just don't want to transfer you. Keep demanding to speak to a supervisor until someone helps!!!!

this is so true!!!! they lie about everything. my friend works at worksource and says ESD is completely understaffed and they just deny claims automatically if they're too backed up. the system is designed to make people give up.

While ESD definitely has problems, this isn't entirely accurate. They don't automatically deny claims to clear backlogs - that would be illegal. They are understaffed though, which is why adjudication takes so long. The best approach is still to be persistent but polite. Bombarding them with angry calls can sometimes flag your account for additional review, which only extends the process.

Quick question - have you been on unemployment before, or is this your first time? Sometimes adjudication happens because of issues from previous claims.

This is my first time on unemployment. I worked at the same company for 6 years before being laid off in a department restructuring. I just found those letters in my correspondence folder though, so I think that's the issue. They needed more info about my separation and I had no idea they were asking for it.

Since you found those letters requesting information about your job separation, here's what you need to do immediately: 1. Call ESD first thing tomorrow morning (right when they open at 8am) 2. Explain you just found the correspondence and want to provide the requested information 3. Have ready: your separation date, reason for separation (layoff due to restructuring), supervisor's name, any documentation of the layoff 4. Ask them to reopen the information request so you can respond 5. Request that they expedite your adjudication due to financial hardship If you can't get through by phone, use the secure message feature in eServices to explain the situation and attach any documentation of your layoff (termination letter, separation agreement, etc). The good news is that if approved, you'll get paid for all weeks you've claimed, even during this adjudication period. So keep filing those weekly claims no matter what.

I'm definitely calling right at 8am tomorrow. I have my termination letter which clearly states it was a layoff due to department restructuring, so hopefully that will resolve things. I'll ask about expediting due to financial hardship too - didn't know that was an option. THANK YOU for all this help!

i dont mean to make u more stressed but u should also apply 4 food stamps while ur waiting!!! esd is taking forever these days and food stamps (SNAP) is much faster. also check if ur city has rent assistance programs cuz lots of places do

That's actually really good advice, thank you. I've been too proud to apply for assistance but at this point I need to swallow my pride. I'll look into SNAP benefits today.

Just checking back - were you able to get through to ESD? Any updates on your situation?

I tried calling right at 8am but couldn't get through. After trying for hours, I ended up using Claimyr like you suggested and got connected to an agent within 30 minutes! The agent was able to see exactly what was holding things up (they needed clarification on my job separation). I sent in my termination letter and they said they'd expedite the review. They couldn't give me an exact timeframe but said it should be much faster now that I've responded to their request. Fingers crossed! Thank you so much for suggesting Claimyr - it was a lifesaver.
