8 weeks in adjudication with ESD - can't reach agents & might lose my house
I'm seriously at my breaking point with ESD. My claim has been stuck in adjudication for 8 WEEKS and I can't get a straight answer from anyone! I've called literally 47 times in the past week and either get disconnected or told 'all agents are busy' before the system hangs up on me. My mortgage payment is already late, and I'm looking at possible foreclosure if this drags on much longer. I've sent messages through eServices that just disappear into the void. I've uploaded every document they asked for. I even drove to a WorkSource office last week and they just told me they 'can't access adjudication information'. Has anyone actually gotten through to ESD recently? How long did your adjudication take? I'm desperate and don't know what else to do!

•Thanks for the reply, though that timeline is terrifying. Did they at least tell you what was causing the hold-up? I have NO IDEA why mine is stuck and it's driving me crazy not knowing if there's something I need to fix or provide.

I was in adjudication for 10 weeks from January through March this year. What worked for me was contacting my state rep's office. Their constituent services team has direct lines to ESD that regular people can't access. They got my claim unstuck within a week after I reached out. Google your district's representatives and email ALL of them (seriously). One of their offices will help you.

•This is really helpful advice, thank you! I didn't even think about contacting my state rep. Did you have to provide them with specific information about your claim? I'm going to look up my district right now.

•Yes, you'll need to give them your claim ID, full name, contact info, and a brief description of your situation. They'll have you sign a release form so they can legally inquire about your case. Don't worry about bothering them - this is literally what their constituent services team is for!

ESD IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST!!! I waited TWELVE WEEKS last fall and nearly lost my apartment. They don't care AT ALL about us. The system is DESIGNED to be frustrating so people give up. Keep filing your weekly claims no matter what - if you miss even one week they can use that as an excuse to deny everything. And document EVERYTHING - dates you called, who you talked to, messages you sent. You'll need it for the inevitable appeal when they try to deny you for some BS reason.

•I've definitely been keeping up with my weekly claims. I didn't think about documenting all my call attempts though - that's smart. Did you end up having to file an appeal?

•YEP. They denied me claiming I "didn't provide requested information" even though I uploaded EVERYTHING they asked for. On appeal I showed proof of all my uploads with timestamps and they reversed the decision. But it took another 5 weeks for the appeal! The whole system is DESIGNED to make people give up!!!

I've been through this exact situation and understand how incredibly stressful it is. A few practical suggestions: 1. Continue filing your weekly claims without fail 2. Contact your mortgage company immediately and explain the situation - many have hardship programs specifically for situations like unemployment 3. Try calling ESD at exactly 7:59am (right before they open) to get in the queue first 4. As another commenter suggested, contact your state representative 5. Check if your adjudication has a specific issue listed in your eServices account under "Pending Issues" For immediate help reaching an actual agent, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an ESD representative when I was in your exact situation. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. It was the only way I could actually speak to someone after weeks of trying.

•Thank you for these tips. I've been calling at different times but haven't tried right at opening - that makes sense. Under "Pending Issues" it just says "Employment Separation" with no other details, which is frustrating because I was laid off in a clear reduction-in-force with 20 other people. Nothing complicated about it! I'll check out that Claimyr service too - at this point I'll try anything.

•I used that Claimyr thing too! Got through to ESD in like 25 minutes after trying for weeks on my own.

Employment counselor here. The 8-10 week adjudication timeline for standard UI claims is unfortunately quite normal in Washington state right now, though it doesn't make the situation any less difficult. A few important points: 1. Adjudication for "Employment Separation" typically means they're verifying details with your former employer, who may be slow to respond 2. If you're facing imminent foreclosure, request a hardship escalation by sending a secure message through eServices specifically stating that you're facing housing loss 3. Contact your mortgage servicer immediately to request forbearance - under most regulations they have options to help during unemployment 4. Continue certifying weekly without fail 5. Contacting your state representative is excellent advice and often works The system is severely backlogged, but most claims do eventually process. Keep all documentation of your separation (layoff notice, emails, etc) readily available for when you do reach someone.

•Thank you for this detailed information. I've tried the hardship escalation twice already with no response. I did speak to my mortgage company and they offered a one-month forbearance, but that's about to expire. Is there anything specific I should say in my messages to ESD to get attention? It feels like they're just being ignored.

•In your hardship message, use very specific language: "URGENT HARDSHIP: Facing foreclosure on [date] due to extended adjudication period." Include your claim ID, the date your claim entered adjudication, and specifically request escalation to a claims manager. Unfortunately, general hardship requests often don't receive the attention they should. Also, reach back out to your mortgage servicer - under most regulations, they can extend forbearance for unemployment situations beyond the initial month.

My claim was stuck in adjudication for 9 weeks earlier this year. What finally worked was sending a message through eServices titled "HARDSHIP - EVICTION PENDING" (even though I wasn't quite at eviction stage yet). Someone called me back within 48 hours and resolved my issue. Make sure you're checking your spam folder too - I missed an important ESD email requesting additional information because it went to spam. Good luck - the system is absolutely broken but persistence does eventually pay off.

•I'll try the hardship message with that specific wording! And good point about the spam folder - just checked and thankfully nothing from ESD in there. Did they explain why your claim was held up for so long when they finally reached out?

•They said my former employer disputed the reason for separation (claimed I quit when I was actually laid off). Once I got an actual person on the phone, I was able to explain the situation and provide documentation showing it was a layoff. The claim was approved 3 days later. The frustrating part was that this could have been resolved in week 1 if they'd just contacted me sooner!

Just wanted to update since my earlier comment - using Claimyr actually does work for getting through to ESD. I was skeptical but tried it after another week of failed calls. Got connected to an agent in about 35 minutes, and they were able to tell me exactly what was holding up my claim and how to fix it. Definitely worth checking out their demo video: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3

•Thanks for the update! I'm going to try this tomorrow morning. At this point I just need to speak to a real person who can tell me what's going on. Did they charge a lot for the service?

•It's not about the cost - it's about getting someone on the phone who can actually help after weeks of frustration. The service got me through when nothing else worked. Just watch their demo video to see how it works.

•Yeah, I check every single day (probably too often honestly). It just shows "Adjudication In Progress" with that pending issue labeled "Employment Separation" but nothing about missing documents or information.

UPDATE: I finally got through to ESD! First, thank you all for your suggestions. I ended up using Claimyr this morning and got connected to a real person in about 30 minutes. Turns out my former employer never responded to ESD's verification request (despite telling me they had). The agent was able to mark it as "employer non-responsive" and said my claim should be processed within 72 hours. She also put a note about hardship due to the mortgage situation. I'll update again when I know more, but wanted to share what worked for me. Also already contacted my state rep's office as backup.

•This is excellent news! The "employer non-responsive" status typically allows ESD to proceed with processing based on claimant information after a reasonable time has passed. The 72-hour timeframe is realistic in these situations. Make sure you keep checking your eServices account for any updates or correspondence, and continue filing your weekly claims as normal.

•CONGRATS on getting through!!! This is exactly what happened to me - employer ignored ESD's requests even though they PROMISED they'd respond quickly. The whole system is stacked against us. Fingers crossed you get paid soon!
