Stuck in ESD adjudication since July - do I wait or contact someone?
I'm so stressed at this point. I filed my unemployment claim in mid-July (it's been over 7 weeks now), and every time I check my account status it just says "adjudication in progress" with absolutely zero additional information. No explanation, no timeline, nothing. I've tried calling the ESD number a bunch of times, but either get disconnected or sit on hold until the office closes. I'm burning through my savings and getting really worried. Does anyone know if I'm supposed to just wait it out? Is there a specific department or person I should be trying to contact? How long do these adjudications typically take in 2025? I've been faithfully filing my weekly claims this whole time, but haven't seen a dime. Any advice would be so appreciated right now.

•Have you tried contacting your state representative? I've been thinking about doing that but wasn't sure if it would help or just waste more time.

Unfortunately, adjudication can take 8-12 weeks right now. ESD is still severely understaffed post-COVID. There are a few things you should do: 1. Keep filing your weekly claims without fail 2. Check your ESD account messages daily - sometimes they request additional info but don't call/email 3. Make sure you're completing your 3 job search activities each week and documenting them properly 4. If there's a specific issue causing the adjudication (like employer dispute or identity verification), you might see it under the "Issues and Decisions" section Waiting is frustrating but unfortunately normal. When your claim is approved, you'll receive all back payments for the weeks you properly claimed.

•Thank you for the detailed response. I've been checking my account daily and there's nothing in the Issues and Decisions section - it's completely empty. Is that normal? Should there at least be something there indicating what they're reviewing?

•Same experience here. I think they put EVERYONE through adjudication now automatically. It's like they assume we're all trying to commit fraud or something. 🙄

After dealing with the same frustrating situation last month, I found a service called Claimyr that got me through to an ESD agent in about 15 minutes instead of waiting on hold forever. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was holding up my claim and what documents I needed to submit. Saved me weeks of waiting! Check out their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 or go to claimyr.com. Totally worth it when you're stuck in adjudication limbo.

An empty Issues and Decisions section typically means one of two things: either they haven't assigned an adjudicator to your case yet, or there's an employer dispute they're investigating. In my experience working with claimants (I'm not ESD but work adjacent to them), this often happens when your former employer contests your eligibility or when there's a mismatch between your reported reason for separation and what your employer reported. Here's what I suggest: 1. Call ESD at exactly 7:59am when they open - that's your best chance of getting through 2. Use the self-service phone system to check if there are specific issues identified (sometimes the phone system has more info than the website) 3. Contact your state legislative representative as they can sometimes expedite claims 4. Request your claim file through a public records request to see if there's information not visible to you in the online portal Adjudication is unfortunately taking 10-14 weeks for many people right now, but it shouldn't be a complete black box with no information.

•Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I was laid off due to budget cuts, and my former employer told me they wouldn't contest it, but maybe something got miscommunicated. I'll try calling right when they open tomorrow and will look into contacting my state rep too. Really appreciate the advice!

I had my claim stuck in adjudication for 9 weeks last year and what finally worked was sending a secure message through the ESD portal with the subject line "URGENT: Adjudication Delay - Financial Hardship" where I explained my financial situation in detail and asked for an expedited review. Surprisingly, someone called me back 2 days later and resolved my claim. Worth trying!

•This is excellent advice. I should have mentioned that in my response too. The financial hardship escalation can sometimes speed things up, especially if you're facing potential eviction, utility shutoffs, or other serious consequences. Just be prepared to provide documentation if they request it.

•This is a common misconception. You absolutely SHOULD continue filing weekly claims while in adjudication. If you don't, and your claim is eventually approved, you won't receive benefits for weeks you didn't claim, even if you were eligible during that time. Always continue filing weekly claims as long as you remain unemployed and eligible, regardless of your claim status.

UPDATE: I wanted to let everyone know what worked for me! I tried several of the suggestions here: 1. First, I sent the hardship message through the ESD portal - no response after 3 days 2. I tried calling at 7:59am - still couldn't get through after multiple attempts 3. I used Claimyr as suggested above and actually got through to a real person! The agent explained that my claim was flagged because I had worked remotely for a company in another state for 3 months last year, which triggered an interstate wage investigation. She expedited my review and my claim was approved just two days later! I received all my back payments yesterday (about $5,800 total for the weeks I'd been claiming). Such a relief! Thanks to everyone who offered advice here.

•That's awesome! Glad you got it resolved and got your back payments. The interstate wage issues always cause delays - wish ESD would be more transparent about these things upfront instead of leaving people in limbo for months.
