Stuck in ESD adjudication since Feb 17th - how much longer?

I've been in adjudication with ESD for over 6 weeks now (since February 17th) and I'm getting really worried about my finances. I finally managed to get through to someone at the unemployment call center yesterday after calling repeatedly for days. All they told me was that I 'have to wait until an adjudicator reviews my response to separation from employer.' Wouldn't give me any timeline or explanation! I've been filing my weekly claims religiously but haven't seen a penny. My savings are almost gone. Has anyone been through something similar recently? How long did your adjudication process take? Any suggestions on what I can do to speed things up? This waiting with zero communication is driving me crazy!

mine took almost 9 weeks last fall... its ridiclous how long they make people wait with no money coming in. i called like 50 times and nobody could tell me anything useful either

9 weeks?! That's insane. Did they at least backpay you for all those weeks once approved?

Unfortunately, ESD adjudication can take anywhere from 4-12 weeks right now. They're still dealing with staffing shortages and a backlog of cases. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims during this time - if approved, you'll receive backpay for all eligible weeks. You should also double-check that your employer has responded to ESD's request for information, as this is often what causes delays. Call your previous employer's HR department to confirm they've submitted what was needed.

Thank you for the info! I'll check with my former employer tomorrow to see if they submitted everything. Is there anything else I can do besides just waiting?

Absolutely - document everything. Keep a log of all your calls to ESD (dates, times, representative names if possible). Also, check your ESD portal regularly for any new questionnaires or document requests that might appear. Sometimes they need additional information but the notification gets lost in email. And make absolutely sure your contact information is up to date in the system.

I'm in week 5 of adjudication right now and I'm freaking out about paying rent. Has anybody had success getting through to an actual adjudicator? The regular reps just tell me they can't transfer me and can't give any timeline... I'm desperate here!

I tried for weeks to reach an adjudicator directly but they won't let you talk to them. The front-line reps are just gatekeepers who can't do anything meaningful to help. The system is designed to be frustrating.

Having been through this process multiple times (unfortunately), here's what you need to know about adjudication: 1. Timeframes: Currently averaging 6-10 weeks for separation issues 2. Contacting adjudicators: They don't take direct calls - they review cases in the order received 3. Escalation options: If you're facing eviction or utility shutoff, request an escalation for hardship 4. Documents: Double-check your ESD account for any pending document requests 5. Employer response: This is often the bottleneck - some employers delay responding If you're facing severe financial hardship, contact your local WorkSource office and ask about emergency assistance programs while waiting for unemployment benefits. Some counties have rent assistance and other support available. Also, you should be receiving updates through your ESD online account - check the "Notifications" section regularly.

This is super helpful, thank you! I didn't know about the hardship escalation option - I'm definitely getting close to that point. How exactly do I request that kind of escalation?

Call the ESD claims center and specifically tell them you need to request a hardship escalation due to imminent eviction, utility disconnection, or other critical financial emergency. They'll ask for documentation of the hardship (eviction notice, disconnection notice, etc.). Have this ready to upload. Not all representatives know about this process, so you might need to call more than once to reach someone who can help with escalation requests.

Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to ESD faster? After waiting in the phone queue for hours over multiple days with no luck, I discovered this service that helped me connect with an actual ESD agent in about 30 minutes. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. The agent I spoke with was able to at least tell me exactly why my claim was in adjudication and what documents they were waiting on. Didn't speed up the actual adjudication but at least I understood what was happening.

is that service legit? sounds kinda sketchy to me

It's definitely legit. They basically call ESD for you and transfer you when they get through. Saved me days of frustration. The agent I got was actually really helpful and added notes to my claim about my financial hardship.

Thanks for the suggestion! At this point I'm willing to try anything to get more information. My savings are almost gone and I need to know if I should be looking at emergency assistance options.

ESD IS THE WORST!!! I was stuck in adjudication for 11 WEEKS last year and every time I called they gave me a different story about what was happening!!! First it was "waiting for employer response" then it was "waiting for adjudicator review" then "additional information needed" but they NEVER TOLD ME what information!!! The whole system is designed to make people give up on their claims! Keep calling EVERYDAY and demand answers!!

this is exactly what happened to me too! They just give u the runaround hoping you'll give up

11 weeks is insane. Did you ever figure out what was actually causing the delay in your case?

NOPE! When it finally got approved, I asked what had taken so long and the person just said "high volume of claims" which is COMPLETE BS because this was months after the pandemic rush!

Quick update on adjudication timeframes - I just spoke with an ESD representative this morning and they confirmed they're currently working on early February adjudication cases, so unfortunately your mid-February case is still a few weeks away from being reviewed. The representative mentioned they're trying to speed up the process but they're understaffed in the adjudication department. Keep filing those weekly claims and make sure to answer the job search questions accurately - if you make a mistake on those while in adjudication, it can trigger additional reviews and further delay your claim.

Thank you for the update. That's actually slightly encouraging that they're working on early February cases now. At least I know I'm getting closer to the front of the line. I've been very careful with my weekly claims and job search activities.

Good point - I just checked my spam folder but don't see anything from ESD. I've been checking my ESD portal messages daily too.

I was in the exact same situation in January. Filed after being laid off, employer contested it saying I quit (which was completely false), and I went into adjudication hell. I called ESD over 70 times in a 3-week period. What finally worked for me was contacting my state representative's office. They have liaisons who work directly with ESD. Within 4 days of contacting my rep, an adjudicator called me, got my side of the story, and approved my benefits the next day with full backpay. Google "[your county] state representative" and reach out to their constituent services. It made all the difference for me!

This is brilliant advice - I hadn't even thought of contacting my state rep! I'm going to try this tomorrow. Did you just call their office or send an email?

I called first and they directed me to an online form specifically for constituent services. I had to provide my claim ID number, contact info, and a brief description of the issue. They asked for permission to act on my behalf with ESD. Be sure to mention the financial hardship the delay is causing - that seems to help prioritize the case.

One important reminder: when your claim is in adjudication, it's critical to continue meeting all job search requirements (3 job search activities per week). Document everything thoroughly in your weekly claims. I've seen cases where people focus so much on the adjudication issue that they neglect job search requirements, and then face even more delays or denials. Also, if you receive any messages or calls from ESD or an adjudicator, respond immediately - even a short delay in your response can push your claim back in the queue.

Thanks for the reminder. I've been doing my 3 job search activities every week and logging them carefully. I'm actually interviewing for a position tomorrow, so hopefully this adjudication nightmare will be a moot point soon if I get the job!
