ESD adjudication timeline - stuck in limbo for 7 weeks now

I've been in adjudication with ESD since early February (about 7 weeks now) and I'm starting to freak out about paying bills. My claim status just says 'adjudication in progress' with zero details about what's being investigated or how long it'll take. I called ESD like 34 times yesterday and never got through to a human being. The automated system just keeps telling me there are too many callers. Can anyone tell me how long adjudication typically takes these days? Is 7 weeks normal or should I be doing something else? I uploaded all my ID verification docs right away and filled out that fact-finding questionnaire they sent me the first week. But nothing has happened since then! My savings are almost gone and I'm getting desperate here.

my adjudication took 5 weeks so ur not too far off from normal. they never tell u whats going on its so frustrating. keep filing ur weekly claims tho or ull lose the weeks

Thanks, that's good to know. Are you sure about the weekly claims part? I've been filing them but wasn't sure if it even mattered since I'm not getting paid anyway.

Adjudication timing varies widely, but 7 weeks is definitely on the longer side. The average seems to be 4-6 weeks currently. A few important points: 1. Yes, absolutely continue filing your weekly claims even while in adjudication. If approved, you'll get paid for all eligible weeks you've claimed. 2. Check your ESD secure message center AND your email regularly - sometimes they request additional information but don't make it obvious. 3. If you have a complex issue (quit vs. fired, multiple employers, etc.), adjudication typically takes longer. What was the reason for your job separation? That often affects adjudication timelines.

I got laid off when my company did a big restructuring in January. They gave me a termination letter stating it was due to "position elimination" and not performance related. I uploaded that with my initial claim. Should I send it again somehow?

I worked for ESD until 2023, and I can tell you that layoffs should actually be processed faster than misconduct or voluntary quit cases. Position elimination is straightforward. The hold-up might be that your employer hasn't responded to ESD's request for information. They have 10 business days to respond, and many employers wait until the very last day or request extensions. Have you tried using the ESD callback feature? Sometimes that works better than calling repeatedly.

Wait, there's a callback feature?? Where do I find that? I've been going insane trying to get through by phone!

The callback feature is USELESS!! I tried it FOUR TIMES and they never called me back!!! Just another way for ESD to pretend they're helping while they sit on our claims and ignore us. 😡 I was in adjudication for 9 weeks before I finally got approved. NINE WEEKS! Almost lost my apartment waiting for them.

Exactly!! The whole system is designed to make us give up. My friend's claim was in adjudication for 11 weeks and when she finally reached someone, they said they were "waiting for her to respond to a message" that was never sent!! Check your spam folders people!!!

I was stuck in adjudication for 6 weeks and finally got through to ESD using Claimyr.com. It cost a bit but saved me weeks of waiting. You get connected to an ESD agent usually within 30 mins instead of calling hundreds of times. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The agent I spoke with was able to see that my adjudication was just sitting there waiting for review. They escalated it and I was approved 3 days later. Might be worth trying if you're desperate.

I've never heard of this service before. Did they actually get you through to a real ESD rep? I'm wondering if it's legit since the ESD lines are always busy when I call.

Yes, they connect you directly to an actual ESD agent. It basically just handles the waiting/calling part for you. Once you're connected, you're talking directly to ESD like normal. The agent I spoke with confirmed my adjudication was assigned but not actively being worked on, so she put in a note to expedite it.

One thing to try is contacting your state representative's office. Many have staff dedicated to helping constituents with ESD issues. They have special channels to inquire about claims and can sometimes get things moving. I've seen adjudications that were stuck for weeks suddenly get resolved days after a legislative inquiry. Find your representative here: https://app.leg.wa.gov/districtfinder/

That's a great idea - I hadn't thought about contacting my rep. I'll try that tomorrow along with the other suggestions. I really appreciate everyone's help!

Just to add one more tip: When you do get through to ESD, ask specifically if there's anything missing from your claim that's causing the delay. Sometimes there's a simple document or question that needs answering, but the system doesn't notify you properly. Also, if your adjudication gets approved, make sure to backdate your job search activities if you haven't been recording them - you'll need to show you were looking for work for each week you claim.

UPDATE: I tried the Claimyr service this morning and actually got through to an ESD agent! She looked up my claim and said it was assigned to an adjudicator last week and should be resolved "soon" but couldn't give me a specific date. She did confirm they have all the documents they need from me and there's nothing else I need to provide. The agent also told me to keep filing my weekly claims and keep documenting my job searches (which thankfully I've been doing). Fingers crossed this gets resolved in the next week or so. Thanks everyone for your help!

Great news! "Assigned to an adjudicator" is a good sign - it means your claim is actively in someone's queue rather than just sitting in the general pool. Keep us posted on how it goes!
