ESD adjudication taking 6+ weeks - is this normal for 2025?

I'm seriously freaking out about my claim being stuck in adjudication for 6 whole weeks now! Lost my job at the manufacturing plant when they moved operations overseas and filed for unemployment right away in early February. My claim immediately got flagged for adjudication (something about my final paycheck including severance). The ESD website just says "pending adjudication decision" and nothing else. My savings are almost gone and rent is due next week. Is 6 weeks normal for adjudication in 2025? I've tried calling at least 20 times but can't get through to anyone who can tell me what's happening or how much longer this might take. Has anyone else experienced this recently? What did you do to get answers?

8 weeks?? I can't wait that long! Did they at least backpay you for all those weeks once it was resolved?

Unfortunately, adjudication times have increased significantly in 2025. The normal process used to take 3-4 weeks, but with the manufacturing sector downturn this quarter, many claims are taking 6-8 weeks for resolution. Your severance pay is likely what triggered the adjudication - they need to verify the exact amount and how it affects your benefit eligibility period. Make sure you're still filing your weekly claims during this time! Even though you're not getting paid yet, you need those weeks on record for when your claim is approved. Also double check your eServices account to see if there are any pending questionnaires or document requests that might be holding things up.

Thank you for explaining this. I didn't realize the manufacturing downturn was affecting processing times. And yes, I've been filing my weekly claims religiously and checking eServices daily. No pending questionnaires showing up - just says "adjudication in progress" with no other details.

I HATE how they leave people hanging for MONTHS!!! They did this to me last year - 7 weeks in "adjudication" with NO UPDATES and then randomly denied me saying I didn't provide some document THEY NEVER ASKED FOR!!! The whole system is designed to make people give up!!!! You need to KEEP CALLING even if it takes 100 tries!!

This happened to my brother too! They said he didn't respond to some questionnaire but he never got notified about it. The system is broken.

I was stuck in adjudication for 5 weeks back in January. What worked for me was contacting my state representative through their website. I filled out their constituent services form explaining my situation, and their office contacted ESD on my behalf. My claim was resolved within a week after that. If you go this route, be sure to include your claim ID number, the date you filed, and specifically mention the financial hardship the delay is causing. They're more responsive when they understand it's an urgent situation.

I never thought of contacting my state rep! That's actually a great idea. Do you just go to their official website to find the constituent services form?

Yes, just search for your district's state representative and look for a "contact" or "constituent services" section on their website. Most have forms specifically for helping with state agencies like ESD.

I've tried at 8am twice but still got the automated message saying they're experiencing high call volume. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow and just keep redialing for the first hour.

Make sure ur answering ur phone even if u dont recognize the number! ESD calls from blocked/unknown numbers sometimes. I missed their call TWICE and it reset my whole claim process!!! So frustrating!!!

I work in HR and we've had several former employees dealing with this same issue this year. From what I understand, cases involving severance pay are taking extra long because ESD has to calculate how that affects your benefit start date. They should have sent you a questionnaire about your severance - did you check your spam folder? If not, you might want to upload documentation about your severance to your account proactively.

I never received any questionnaire about severance! I'll definitely check my spam folder and upload the severance documentation to my account. Thank you for this insight - I had no idea this might be causing the delay.

After trying Claimyr, I was able to speak with an ESD agent who explained that my adjudication was delayed because they were waiting for information from my former employer (who wasn't responding). The agent was able to expedite my case since it had been over 30 days. My claim was resolved 3 days later with backpay for all weeks. Check out claimyr.com - it saved me from having to wait another month.

Thanks for sharing this. I'm going to try contacting my state rep first since that doesn't cost anything, but if that doesn't work in the next few days, I might give Claimyr a shot. At this point, I just need to talk to someone who can tell me what's going on with my claim.

One more important thing - if your adjudication is specifically about severance pay, make sure you understand how ESD treats this. They typically don't deny your claim entirely, but they may delay your benefits start date based on the severance amount. For example, if you received 4 weeks of severance, your UI benefits might not begin until those 4 weeks have elapsed. However, you should still receive benefits for weeks after that period, and they should be paid retroactively once adjudication is complete. Also, check if your severance was paid as a lump sum or in regular paycheck intervals, as this can affect how ESD calculates the delay period. Having this documentation ready can help speed things up when you do reach someone.

This is so helpful! My severance was 3 weeks of pay given as a lump sum, so maybe they're calculating that I shouldn't receive benefits until mid-March? That would actually make sense with the timing. I'll definitely have all that documentation ready when I talk to someone.
