Is 3 weeks in adjudication normal for ESD claims? Getting anxious

I filed for unemployment after being laid off from my construction job and my claim has been stuck in 'adjudication' for 3 weeks now. No movement at all. Is this normal? How long does adjudication usually take with ESD these days? I've been filing my weekly claims like I'm supposed to, but I'm getting really worried about bills piling up. My savings are almost gone and my landlord isn't exactly the patient type. Has anyone else experienced this long of a wait in 2025? Any idea when I might actually see some money?

3 weeks is actually pretty NORMAL these days. Mine was in adjudication for 5 WEEKS before anything happened! The ESD system is completely overwhelmed because of the layoffs in tech and manufacturing. Just keep filing your weekly claims and eventually they'll get to you. It's ridiculous how they expect people to survive while they take their sweet time.

5 weeks?! I don't think I can make it that long without income. Did they at least backpay you for all those weeks once it was approved?

Adjudication means there's an issue with your claim that needs to be resolved before benefits can be paid. Common reasons include employment separation issues (they need to verify why you left your job), availability for work questions, or wage verification. The standard timeline is 2-4 weeks, but it can take longer depending on your specific situation and their current workload. Make sure you've submitted all requested documents and continue filing your weekly claims. If approved, you'll receive backpay for all eligible weeks. If you need to check on your specific issue, try contacting ESD directly.

Thanks for the info - that makes sense. They did ask for some additional documentation about my layoff which I uploaded last week. I guess I just need to be patient, but it's stressful not knowing.

Your brother-in-law works for ESD? Can he tell them to hire more people?? The system is broken!!

My adjudication took 4 weeks, but my cousin's took only 2. I think it really depends on what they're investigating and how complex your work history is. Did you have multiple employers in your base year? That can slow things down.

Actually, the number of employers in your base year doesn't directly affect adjudication timing - that's more about wage calculation. Adjudication is typically related to separation reasons, availability issues, or identity verification. The timing variance is usually due to the complexity of the specific issue being adjudicated and current department workload, not the number of employers.

If you're struggling with bills while waiting, don't forget there are other resources available. Most utility companies have hardship programs, and you might qualify for emergency rental assistance through your county. Also, food banks can help stretch your budget. I had to use these when my claim was in adjudication for over a month last winter.

That's really good advice, thank you. I'll look into the rental assistance programs. Did your claim eventually get approved?

Have you tried calling ESD? I was stuck in adjudication for weeks until I finally got through to a person who was able to expedite my claim. Took forever to get someone on the phone though.

I've tried calling about 20 times in the last week. Either get a busy signal or it disconnects me after waiting on hold for an hour. It's so frustrating!

I had the same issue reaching ESD by phone until someone recommended Claimyr to me. It's a service that basically holds your place in line with ESD and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration. You can check out how it works at claimyr.com or watch their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Once I actually talked to an agent, they were able to tell me exactly what was holding up my claim and how long it might take to resolve.

Thanks for the tip! I'll check that out. At this point I just need to talk to someone who can tell me what's going on with my claim.

When I was in adjudication I got so stressed I couldn't sleep. Then turned out they just needed to verify my identity and it was resolved in like 5 minutes once someone actually looked at my file. The waiting is the worst part!

This is exactly why the system is broken! They make people wait weeks for something that takes minutes to resolve. It's like they WANT people to suffer.

One important thing to remember: adjudication doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem with your claim. Sometimes it's just standard verification, especially for first-time claimants or if there's been a significant gap since your last claim. Keep an eye on your online account for any requests for information or documents - responding quickly to these can help speed up the process.

Update us when your adjudication is complete! It helps everyone to know current processing times since they vary throughout the year. In my experience, spring/summer claims tend to process faster than fall/winter ones.

Will do! Thanks everyone for the advice and support. It helps knowing I'm not alone in this situation.
