Adjudication taking 5+ weeks - no ESD benefits yet! Normal or should I worry?
I filed my unemployment claim on January 12th, 2025 after getting laid off from my construction job. My weekly claims all show as 'pending' because there's an 'adjudication in process' message that hasn't changed for FIVE WEEKS now. I haven't received a single payment yet and my savings are almost gone. My eServices dashboard doesn't show any issues that need attention, and I've certified correctly every week. I've tried calling ESD at least 20 times but always get disconnected or told the wait is 'over 4 hours.' Is this timeframe normal? Anyone know how to actually get through to a human? I'm about to miss rent payment and getting desperate.

•7 weeks?? That's insane! Did you ever find out what was causing the delay in your case? I just don't understand why they'd leave people hanging this long with zero income.

While adjudication delays are unfortunately common right now, 5+ weeks is definitely on the longer side. There's likely an issue with your claim that needs investigation - perhaps your employer contested it, there's a question about your job separation reason, or they need to verify your identity further. You need to keep trying to reach ESD. Best times to call are Tuesday-Thursday right when they open at 8am. Also, send a secure message through your eServices account specifically asking about the adjudication issue.

•Thanks for this info. I've sent 3 secure messages already with no response. My employer definitely shouldn't be contesting - it was a documented layoff due to project completion. I'll try the early morning call strategy tomorrow.

I was stuck in adjudication for almost 6 weeks last month!! It was a NIGHTMARE. Turns out they needed some additional documentation about why I left my previous job but NEVER TOLD ME. I only found out after finally reaching someone. Have you checked your "Decision Status" tab? Sometimes there are letters there explaining what's needed, but they don't notify you when they upload them.

•Just checked the Decision Status tab and there's nothing there! No alerts, no documents, nothing but "adjudication in process" since January 17th. It's so frustrating not knowing what might be holding things up.

This happened to me too! It's because ESD is understaffed and they prioritize new claims over issues with existing ones. The only reason mine finally got resolved was because I contacted my state representative's office. They have special channels to inquire about unemployment cases. Worth a try if you're desperate!

•I hadn't thought about contacting my state rep. That's a great idea - I'll look up their contact info tonight. At this point I'm willing to try anything!

Have you heard of Claimyr? I was in the exact same situation last month - stuck in adjudication for weeks with no way to reach anyone at ESD. I used Claimyr.com and they got me connected to an ESD agent in about 25 minutes when I had been trying for weeks on my own. The agent was able to see exactly what was holding up my claim and resolved it that same day. They have a video demo of how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Seriously, it saved me so much stress and I got my benefits the following week.

•This sounds too good to be true... they actually get you through to a real person? I'll check out that video. At this point I just need someone at ESD to look at my claim and tell me what's happening.

•Yes, it gets you through to actual ESD agents. They basically navigate the phone system for you and wait in the queue, then call you when they reach an agent. The video explains it better than I can. I was skeptical too but it worked for me when nothing else did.

ESD IS THE WORST!!! I waited 9 WEEKS for my adjudication last year!!!!!! Every week they said they'd get to it "soon" and they NEVER did. I filed a complaint with the state ombudsman and magically my claim was resolved THREE DAYS LATER. Coincidence??? I THINK NOT!!! The system is designed to make people give up!!

•While I understand your frustration, the system isn't designed to make people give up. ESD is just severely understaffed and working through a backlog. That said, filing a complaint with the ombudsman is a legitimate strategy when you've been waiting an unreasonable amount of time.

my friend just went thru this last month. he said the key is checking ur account every day for new notices. sometimes they need info but the email notifications dont work. he finally got paid for 8 weeks all at once. hang in there

•I've been checking my account multiple times daily and there's never anything new. It just sits there with the same status. But good to know they might eventually pay everything in a lump sum - that would be such a relief!

One important thing to keep in mind - make absolutely sure you're completing your three job search activities every week and documenting them properly, even while in adjudication. When your claim finally processes, they'll review your job search history and could deny benefits for any weeks where you didn't meet the requirements, even if the delay was on their end.

•Yes, I've been super careful about that! I actually do 4-5 activities each week just to be safe, and I keep detailed notes about each one. But thank you for the reminder - I'd hate to finally get through adjudication only to have weeks denied for job search issues.

UPDATE: Just wanted to share that I used Claimyr this morning and got through to ESD in about 30 minutes. Turns out there was a flag on my account because my employer reported a slightly different last day of work than what I entered (February 1st vs January 31st). The agent was able to fix it right away and said my benefits should start processing within 48 hours. Such a relief to finally know what was happening! Thanks everyone for your advice.

•That's great news! It's amazing how something that small can hold up your entire claim for over a month. Let us know when you actually receive payment - I'm curious how quickly it comes through after they resolve the issue.

•That's fantastic! And wow, over a single day's difference? The system seems so unforgiving of tiny discrepancies. I really appreciate you updating us!
