ESD adjudication stuck for 2+ months - finally approved after 60+ days

Just got my claim approved today after the longest wait ever! Filed for unemployment back in mid-August after getting laid off from my construction job. My claim showed 'adjudication in progress' starting August 22nd, and I've been filing my weekly claims religiously with ZERO communication from ESD. Literally radio silence for over 60 days while bills kept piling up. Was starting to think I'd never see a penny. For anyone else stuck in adjudication hell - mine finally processed yesterday (10/17). The wait was about 9 weeks total. Has anyone else experienced these ridiculous wait times? Is this normal now? I'm relieved but also annoyed it took so long with no updates or explanation.

Unfortunately, this is pretty standard for ESD these days. Their adjudication backlog has been terrible in 2025. I filed in June and waited 7 weeks in adjudication. The key is to keep filing your weekly claims even when you're not getting paid - once they approve your claim, you'll get all the backpay for those weeks (assuming you met all eligibility requirements during that time). Glad to hear yours finally went through!

Yeah, the backpay hit my account this morning - it was a huge relief! Just wish they'd communicate ANYTHING during the process. Did you ever find out why yours was in adjudication for so long?

Honestly, it seemed totally random. I tried calling ESD probably 50+ times over those 9 weeks and never got through once. The online message center was useless too - just form responses saying "your claim is under review." It just suddenly changed status yesterday with no explanation.

This is why the ESD system is completely broken. They expect people to somehow survive 2+ months with no income while they take their sweet time reviewing claims. And they wonder why people get desperate and give up! I waited 11 weeks last year, and when I finally got through to someone, they told me it was because of a "system flag" that could have been resolved in 5 minutes if anyone had actually looked at my claim. The whole system needs to be rebuilt from scratch.

11 WEEKS?! That's insane. Did you ever escalate it to a supervisor or contact your state rep? I was about to start doing that next week if nothing happened.

I'm at week 4 of adjudication and totally freaking out reading this thread. How are people supposed to pay rent when ESD takes 2+ months to review claims? I thought adjudication was supposed to be like 3 weeks max!

It used to be 3-4 weeks pre-pandemic, but ESD has been understaffed since then. Currently they're claiming 6-8 weeks for standard adjudication, but many claims are taking longer, especially if there are employer disputes or if they need to verify information from multiple sources. Make sure you're responding to any requests for information immediately - even a small delay on your part can add weeks to the process.

Has anyone tried the Claimyr service to get through to ESD? I was stuck in adjudication for 7 weeks and couldn't get through on the phones, but then I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. They were able to tell me exactly what was holding up my claim and pushed it through the next day. They have a video demo too: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Honestly wish I'd known about it sooner instead of wasting hours redialing ESD.

Wish I'd known about this 9 weeks ago! Would've saved me so much stress. Might be helpful for others still stuck though.

is this legit? seems kinda sketchy to pay for something that should be free

I'm going to share some insider info as someone who used to work adjacent to ESD - adjudication timeframes vary dramatically based on the type of issue flagged on your claim. Identity verification issues can take 3-4 weeks. Employer disputes about reason for separation can take 6-8 weeks. Multiple employers or complex work history can take 8-10 weeks. And if your claim gets flagged for potential fraud (even wrongly), that can take 10-12 weeks. The system is definitely broken, but knowing what's causing your adjudication can help set expectations. For the original poster - did they ever tell you what caused the adjudication in the first place?

That's super helpful context, thank you! They actually never told me why it was in adjudication for so long. The approval letter just said my claim was approved with no explanation for the delay. My situation wasn't complicated - worked for the same company for 3 years, clear layoff due to project ending. Maybe they were verifying wages or something? The mystery continues...

One tip for everyone still waiting - make sure you're doing your job search activities and documenting them properly every week, even during adjudication. I've seen people wait 2+ months, finally get approved, then have half their weeks denied because they didn't do the required 3 job search activities each week during the wait. The system is very unforgiving about this.

Wait, we have to do job search activities even while in adjudication? I thought that didn't start until you were approved! I haven't been doing any formal job searching yet because I thought I'd be called back to my job soon. Does this mean I won't get paid for these weeks?? Now I'm panicking...

Yes, you need to complete the job search requirements for every week you claim benefits, even during adjudication - unless you have an approved standby status. If you haven't been doing job search activities, you should start immediately. You might not get paid for previous weeks, but you can appeal those determinations if you had good cause for not conducting job searches (like believing you were on standby when you weren't).

Just wanted to update that I finally got a letter explaining why my claim was in adjudication. Apparently my former employer initially contested the claim saying I quit instead of being laid off. Even though I submitted documentation proving it was a layoff right away, it still took them 9 weeks to verify. So frustrating that ESD just takes employers at their word and makes us wait months to prove otherwise.

This happens SO OFTEN. Employers routinely contest legitimate claims to keep their UI tax rates down, and ESD gives them the benefit of the doubt while making claimants jump through hoops. It's a system designed to protect businesses, not workers. At least you finally got your benefits though.
