ESD claim stuck in adjudication since Feb 22 - how much longer will this take?

I filed my unemployment claim back on February 22nd and it's been sitting in 'adjudication in process' status for what feels like forever. Nobody explained what this actually means or how long I should expect to wait. My last job was in healthcare administration and I got laid off when the clinic downsized. I've been applying everywhere but haven't had any luck yet. My savings are almost gone and I'm getting really stressed about paying rent next month. Has anyone else been stuck in this adjudication limbo? What does this even mean and how much longer should I expect to wait before I can get my benefits? I've tried calling ESD at least 15 times but can never get through to a real person.

adjudication means theres some issue they need to investigate before they can pay u. could be anything - your employer might be contesting it, or they need to verify your identity/wages/reason for separation etc. mine was stuck for like 6 weeks last yr

SIX WEEKS?! I can't wait that long! Did they at least tell you what the issue was? I've got bills piling up and I have no idea what I'm supposed to be fixing.

The adjudication process means there's a question or issue with your claim that needs to be resolved before benefits can be paid. This could be related to your job separation, availability for work, or other eligibility factors. An adjudicator needs to review your case, possibly contact your employer, and make a determination. Unfortunately, adjudication timelines vary widely. Currently, ESD is taking about 4-7 weeks to complete most adjudications, though some complex cases can take longer. You should continue filing your weekly claims during this time - if your claim is approved, you'll receive back payments for all eligible weeks. Check your ESD account for any messages or alerts that might explain what specific issue is being adjudicated. There might be questionnaires they need you to complete.

They NEVER tell you what's being adjudicated!! The whole system is designed to be confusing and make people give up. I went through this last year and ended up waiting 9 WEEKS with zero communication from ESD before finally getting approved. Keep filing those weekly claims though - I got a huge backpay once they finally figured it out.

Thanks for sharing your experience. How did you finally get through to someone? I've been trying the number on their website but it's always busy or disconnects me after waiting.

I had a similar issue last summer when my claim got stuck in adjudication for almost 5 weeks. After dozens of failed call attempts, I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me get through to an ESD agent within 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Once I got through to an actual person, they told me my adjudication was due to a discrepancy between the separation reason I provided and what my employer reported. The agent was able to expedite my claim review since I explained my financial hardship. My claim was resolved within a week after that call. Definitely keep filing your weekly claims while waiting - any eligible weeks will be paid retroactively once adjudication is complete.

Thank you so much for the tip about Claimyr. I'll check it out right now because I'm desperate to talk to a real person about my claim. Did they tell you what the discrepancy was specifically? I'm wondering if my employer said something different than I did about the layoff.

Check ur ESD notifications and dashboard really carefully!!! Sometimes they send u questionnaires that you have to complete for the adjudication process and if u miss them it just stays stuck forever!! I didn't realize this and my claim was delayed an extra 3 weeks because I missed a time-sensitive questionnaire buried in my dashboard. Also make sure ur checking the email u used to register for ESD!!

I just double-checked everything and don't see any questionnaires or messages asking for additional information. My dashboard just shows the claim status as 'adjudication in process' with no explanation of what that means. Is there a specific section where they hide these questionnaires?

adjuication is wen they look at ur claim to see if u qualify. my neighbor waited 8 weeks n her husband waited only 2 weeks. depends on how busy they r i think

not exactly true... adjudication is specifically when there's a PROBLEM with your claim, not just the normal review process. if your claim goes into adjudication it means theres an issue they need to resolve

To clarify some confusion in this thread - adjudication specifically refers to the process of resolving issues or questions about your claim eligibility. It's not the standard processing that all claims go through. Common reasons for adjudication include: - Discrepancies in separation reason (you say laid off, employer says quit/fired) - Questions about your availability for work - Verification of identity or wages - Potential benefit fraud indicators - Job refusal concerns Since you mentioned being laid off due to downsizing, one possibility is that your employer may have reported a different reason for separation or hasn't responded to ESD's inquiry yet. Another possibility is that they're verifying your wages or work history. Most importantly - continue filing your weekly claims, make sure you're completing your three required job search activities each week, and document everything carefully. If your claim is approved, you'll receive back payments.

Thank you for the clear explanation. I've been doing my job searches and documenting everything carefully. I just wish there was some way to find out exactly what the issue is so I could help resolve it faster.

After you get through to an agent, be sure to ask if they can add an "escalation" or "hardship" note to your claim. If you're facing eviction, utility shutoffs, or other serious financial hardships, ESD can sometimes prioritize your claim review. They won't always volunteer this option unless you specifically ask about it. Also, check if you qualify for the Hardship Extension which can provide some benefits while your regular claim is in adjudication. Not everyone qualifies, but it's worth asking about if you're in a dire situation.

I definitely qualify for hardship consideration at this point. My landlord is already asking about next month's rent and I'm down to my last few hundred dollars. I'll ask about both the escalation and the Hardship Extension when I get through to someone.

my brothers claim was in adjudacation for 2 months!!! he ended up having to take a job at mcdonalds just to pay rent. the system is totally broken

This is EXACTLY what they want to happen! Force people to take ANY job instead of paying the benefits we earned. I ended up having to borrow money from family during my 9-week adjudication nightmare. The whole system is designed to be so frustrating that people give up.

Update: I finally got through to ESD using that Claimyr service someone recommended below. It actually worked! The agent told me that my claim is in adjudication because my employer disputed that I was laid off - they're claiming I was terminated for performance reasons which is completely untrue. The agent added a hardship note to my file and said an adjudicator would contact me within 7-10 business days to get my side of the story. At least now I know what's going on. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!

That's great progress! Make sure you gather any documentation that supports your layoff claim - emails, termination letter, communications with managers, etc. The adjudicator will want specific evidence that contradicts your employer's statement. When they call, stay calm and factual - emotional arguments don't help as much as clear evidence and timeline details. The good news is that many employer disputes get resolved in the employee's favor, especially when the employer can't provide documentation of performance warnings or improvement plans. Keep filing those weekly claims in the meantime!
