ESD claim stuck in pending limbo for 8 weeks - contacted rep and now heading to adjudication

I feel like I'm losing my mind waiting for my unemployment benefits. My claim has been stuck in pending status for EIGHT WEEKS now! I've called ESD probably 30+ times but either get disconnected or told to wait. I finally emailed my legislative representative this morning out of pure desperation, and surprisingly heard back from ESD already saying my claim is 'going to an adjudicator.' That sounds like progress, but what does that actually mean? How much longer am I expected to survive without income? Has anyone gone through the adjudication process recently? How long did it take before you actually saw money in your account? My savings are completely depleted and I'm seriously worried about making rent next month.

I went through adjudication back in February this year. Once your claim gets assigned to an adjudicator, they typically review it within 7-21 days. However, the actual timeframe depends on their current backlog. Some people get lucky and see movement within a week, others might wait another month. Make sure all your documentation is uploaded in your eServices account, and continue filing your weekly claims even while waiting. This ensures you'll get backpay for all weeks once approved. The adjudicator might call you for additional information, so keep your phone handy and answer all calls, even from unknown numbers.

Thanks for the info. A MONTH?? I seriously can't wait another month. Nobody at ESD seems to understand that real people with real bills are suffering while they take their sweet time. I'll keep filing weekly but it feels pointless when nothing is happening. Will they really backpay all 8 weeks I've been waiting?

omg i feel yr pain!!! been there done that, took me 11 weeks total from first filing to getting my 1st payment. the adjudicator part was like 3 weeks for me? but that was during a really busy time. keep calling them every single day!!

11 weeks is absolutely ridiculous! The system is completely broken when people have to wait nearly 3 months for benefits they're entitled to. I've heard that contacting your state rep is actually one of the better ways to get movement on your claim, so OP already did the right thing there.

I've been dealing with ESD for years through seasonal employment, and unfortunately, adjudication can take anywhere from 2-6 weeks depending on case complexity and current workload. Contacting your legislative rep was smart - that often speeds things up. One thing that helped me tremendously when I was in adjudication was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual ESD agent. They have a service that helps you skip the hold times and connects you directly with an agent who can check your claim status and sometimes expedite things if you're facing financial hardship. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 When you do speak with an agent, explicitly mention your financial hardship situation. Sometimes they can flag your case for expedited handling if you're at risk of eviction or utility shutoff.

Thank you for the tip about Claimyr - I hadn't heard of that service before. At this point I'd try anything to get this resolved. Has anyone else used this service? Did it actually work? I'll check out that video later today.

I used Claimyr last month when my claim got stuck and it actually worked! Got through to a real person in about 15 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. The agent I spoke with was able to see exactly what was happening with my claim and gave me a timeframe.

Adjudication is the process where ESD investigates eligibility issues on your claim. Common reasons include: 1. Verification of job separation reason (quit vs laid off) 2. Ability and availability to work 3. Job search compliance issues 4. Wage verification 5. Identity verification Do you know which issue triggered the adjudication? This affects timeline. For example, simple ID verification might be quick while investigating a job separation issue where they need to contact your former employer could take longer. And yes, they will backpay all eligible weeks once approved. Just make absolutely sure you're filing your weekly claims while waiting - this is a common mistake people make.

I honestly have no idea what triggered it. I was laid off (with documentation from my employer), have been doing all my job searches, and uploaded my ID verification stuff right away. I'll call tomorrow and see if I can get more specific information. And yes, I've been religiously filing my weekly claims even though it feels useless at this point. Thanks for confirming about the backpay.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE U GIVE UP!!!! they hope u will just go away if they make u wait long enough. i had to wait 14 weeks last yr and then they tried to say i didnt qualify. had to FIGHT for another month after that. its not just u its EVERYONE. ESD is the WORST agency in the entire state!!!

While the frustration is understandable, this kind of comment isn't particularly helpful. ESD is definitely understaffed and their systems are outdated, but they're not actively trying to deny legitimate claims. They're working through a backlog with limited resources. The best approach is to be persistent but professional when dealing with them.

did u check ur notices section in eServices? sometimes they need more info but dont tell u directly and just put it there and ur claim gets stuck until u respond

Just checked the Notices section and there's nothing new there. The only notices I have are from when I first filed confirming my application was received. Nothing about needing additional information. Thanks for suggesting that though!

Update us when you hear back from the adjudicator. Based on recent patterns I've seen in these forums, adjudication is moving a bit faster in 2025 than it was last year. The fact that you already got movement after contacting your representative is a good sign. One important tip: when the adjudicator calls, they often show up as "Unknown" or "No Caller ID" on your phone. Make sure you're answering those calls between 8am-5pm on weekdays. If you miss their call, it can add days or weeks to your wait time.

Will do! I've started answering every single call, even the spam risk ones, just in case it's ESD. The anxiety of potentially missing their call is just another fun part of this whole nightmare process. I'll post back here once I have any updates.

I was in adjudication for about 3 weeks last month. What finally worked for me was sending a secure message through the eServices portal specifically mentioning financial hardship and potential eviction. I got a call from an adjudicator two days later. Don't give up hope - once they finally process your claim, you'll get all the back weeks paid at once. I ended up getting a pretty substantial deposit when mine finally cleared. Just make sure you keep doing those 3 job search activities every week and documenting them.

my neighbor went thru this whole thing last year and the adjudication part took like 10 days but then after that there was another week before money showed up. she said the worst part was not knowing what was happening. ended up getting like $7000 all at once when it finally went through tho!

I'd recommend checking your online claim status daily. Sometimes they resolve adjudication without even contacting you, especially if they get all the information they need from your employer or their own records. The status will change from "Pending" to either "Paid" or "Processing" once adjudication completes successfully. Also, you mentioned contacting your legislative representative - that's actually one of the most effective ways to get movement on a stuck claim. The fact that ESD responded to you the same day is a very good sign. Your claim has likely been flagged for priority handling now.

I've been checking the online portal obsessively every day, sometimes multiple times a day. It's still showing "Pending" for all 8 weeks. I'll keep checking though. And yes, I was surprised how quickly I heard back from my rep! I should have done that weeks ago instead of suffering in silence.
