ESD adjudication taking forever - waiting since July with no updates
I filed for unemployment back in July and my claim has been stuck in adjudication since July 17th... that's almost 3 months now! The eServices dashboard just says 'adjudication in progress' but gives zero details about what the issue actually is. I've tried calling ESD literally 40+ times but either get disconnected or told the wait is 4+ hours. I've sent messages through the portal twice with no response. My savings are completely drained at this point and I'm starting to panic about rent next month. Has anyone had their claim stuck this long? Is this normal? What am I supposed to do while waiting? I'm still submitting weekly claims but haven't received a penny.

•June 29th?? That's even longer than me. Have you been able to reach anyone at all?

Unfortunately, adjudication timeframes have gotten much worse in 2023. What used to take 3-4 weeks is now taking 10-14 weeks in many cases. The key is to keep filing your weekly claims while waiting - if your claim is eventually approved, you'll get backpay for all weeks properly claimed. Do you know what triggered the adjudication? Common reasons include: - Employment separation issues (quit/fired circumstances) - Availability for work questions - Unreported earnings - Identity verification Knowing the specific issue can help determine how to address it.

•Thanks for the response. I honestly have no idea what triggered it. I was laid off (downsizing) and have all my termination paperwork. The only unusual thing was that I took a 2-week vacation right after being laid off (which was planned before I knew about the layoff). I reported this on my application. Could that be it?

•That could definitely be it. When you take a vacation immediately after filing, it raises questions about your availability for work during that period. ESD needs to determine if you were still actively seeking employment while on vacation or if you were essentially removed from the job market during that time. This would trigger an availability adjudication.

the esd system is DESIGNED to make u give up!!!! they hope ull just stop filing and go away. its all about denying benefits they owe u. my cousin waited 4 months last year before finally getting approved. keep filing every week no matter what!!

•That's not entirely accurate. While the system is frustratingly slow, it's more about being understaffed than deliberately trying to deny claims. They're actually required by federal standards to process a certain percentage of claims within specific timeframes, and they regularly fail to meet those metrics due to staffing issues.

I know exactly how frustrating this is. My claim was in adjudication for 9 weeks last year. What finally worked for me was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual ESD agent. They basically call ESD for you and connect you when they reach an agent. They have a demo video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Once I actually spoke with someone, they were able to see that my adjudication was completed but hadn't been properly processed in the system. The agent pushed it through and I got all my backpay within 48 hours.

•I hadn't heard of this service before. Did you just need to explain your situation once you got through to someone? I'm desperate at this point so I'll try anything.

•Yes, once I got through I explained how long I'd been waiting. The agent looked up my claim and could see notes that weren't visible to me on eServices. They told me exactly what the issue was (in my case it was verifying my previous employer's information) and that it had actually been resolved already but needed to be processed. Sometimes claims get stuck in their system and need someone to manually move them forward.

While waiting for adjudication, make sure you're doing these things: 1. Continue filing weekly claims without fail 2. Document all your job search activities (minimum 3 per week) 3. Check your eServices account daily for any new messages or questionnaires 4. If you haven't already, try contacting your state representative's office. They can sometimes expedite cases that have been pending too long. 5. Consider applying for other assistance programs while waiting (food stamps, rental assistance, etc) Have you received any fact-finding questionnaires in your eServices account? Sometimes these get sent but don't trigger notifications.

•Thank you for these tips. I've been doing 1-3 religiously. I hadn't thought about contacting my state rep - I'll look into that tomorrow. And I just double-checked my account for questionnaires and don't see any. Would they appear in the same place as the weekly claim forms?

•They typically appear in your eServices inbox or sometimes as alerts at the top of your dashboard. Also check your spam folder for emails from ESD, as their notifications sometimes end up there. When contacting your state representative, be sure to include your full name, contact information, and ESD claim ID number (if you have it). Explain how long you've been waiting and the financial hardship it's causing. They often have dedicated staff who work on constituent services and have established contacts within state agencies.

I work at WorkSource (we're connected to ESD) and while I can't speak to specific claims, I can tell you that adjudication timeframes have indeed increased substantially. The official target is 21 days, but many claims are taking 8-12 weeks right now. One thing that might help: call the ESD main line early in the morning (right when they open at 8:00 AM) and specifically ask for a callback rather than waiting on hold. The callback system works better than waiting in the queue. Also, Thursdays and Fridays tend to have slightly lower call volumes than early in the week.

•Thanks for the insider perspective. I'll try the callback option tomorrow morning. Do you know if there's any way to find out what specific issue triggered the adjudication? That's what's driving me crazy - not knowing what the problem even is.

•Unfortunately, the specific adjudication reasons aren't always visible to claimants in the online system - that's a common frustration. When you do get through to an agent, specifically ask: 1) What type of adjudication is on your claim, 2) Whether any information is missing from you, and 3) The current status/timeframe. Write down the names of anyone you speak with and take detailed notes of the conversation. This documentation can be helpful if you need to escalate your case later.

my claim was stuck for 2 months but turns out it was because my previous employer contested it saying i quit when i was actually laid off. once i provided the termination letter it got resolved in like 3 days. might wanna check if ur employer is saying something different than u did about why u left

•That's a good point. I have a good relationship with my former employer though, and they've confirmed they reported it as a layoff due to downsizing. I still have the layoff notice they gave me. But maybe there's some other discrepancy I'm not aware of.

Quick update question - have you been receiving any correspondence by mail? Some adjudication notices are still sent via postal mail rather than electronically, especially if they involve third-party information from your employer.

•I've been checking my mail carefully and haven't received anything from ESD except the initial monetary determination letter back in July. Is there something specific I should be looking for?

•The most important pieces would be any fact-finding questionnaires or interview notices. They typically come in official ESD envelopes with the department logo. If you haven't received any of these, that's actually good news - it likely means they're just backlogged rather than waiting on information from you. One last suggestion - if you have documentation related to your layoff (termination letter, severance agreement, etc.), go ahead and upload it to your eServices account under the document upload section. Sometimes being proactive with documentation can help move things along.
