Stuck in ESD adjudication for 6 weeks - normal or should I panic?

So I got laid off from my construction job back in January when the project finished early. Filed for unemployment right away on the ESD website and everything seemed fine at first. Got the monetary determination letter saying I qualify for $826/week. But then two weeks in, my claim status changed to 'adjudication in progress' and it's been stuck there for SIX WEEKS now! No explanation, no timeline, nothing. I've called like 50 times but can't get through to a human being. The automated system just tells me my claim is 'pending adjudication' whatever that means. My savings are practically gone and I'm worried about making next month's rent. Does anyone know how long this adjudication thing typically takes? Is six weeks normal or should I be doing something else? Getting desperate here.

mine took 8 weeks to clear adjudication last year. just keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting! thats super important

8 weeks?? That's insane. But thanks for the tip about weekly claims - I've been doing those religiously every Sunday. Did they ever tell you what the adjudication was about in your case?

Adjudication can take anywhere from 3-10 weeks depending on your specific case and current ESD workload. The department has to investigate certain aspects of your claim that were flagged in the system. Common reasons for adjudication include: - Verification of job separation reason (layoff vs. quit vs. termination) - Employer contesting your claim - Discrepancies in reported wages or hours - Issues with your ability and availability to work Definitely keep filing your weekly claims during this time! When your claim is eventually approved, you'll receive all back payments for weeks properly claimed. Have you checked your ESD online account for any messages or alerts? Sometimes they request additional information but the notices don't always come by email.

Thanks for the detailed info. I've checked my online account almost daily and there's nothing in the messages section. No requests for documents or anything. The only thing that changed was the status going to "adjudication in progress" after my former employer responded to their inquiry. I'm guessing they might be disputing something, but I was legitimately laid off when the project ended.

ESD is THE WORST!!! I went through the same nightmare last fall. 9 weeks in adjudication and they never once told me why. Then suddenly approved with no explanation. The system is completely broken!!! They don't care that people have bills to pay and families to feed while they take their sweet time "investigating" perfectly legitimate claims.

I had good luck using Claimyr to get through to an actual ESD agent when my claim was stuck in adjudication for 4 weeks. They basically connect you to an ESD rep without you having to go through the endless redial game. Costs a bit but was worth it to me to finally talk to someone who could tell me what was going on. The rep was able to see exactly why my claim was flagged and gave me an estimated timeline. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3

I've never heard of this service before. Did they actually help resolve your adjudication faster or just give you information about it? At this point I'd pay just to know what's going on.

They didn't speed up my claim directly, but the ESD rep I spoke to told me exactly what documents they needed that weren't in my file. I was able to upload them right away instead of waiting for them to eventually contact me. The agent also put notes in my file about our conversation. My claim was approved about 10 days later.

Have you tried contacting your state representative? When my claim was stuck for nearly 7 weeks, I emailed my district rep and their office actually got ESD to look at my claim within 48 hours. Worth a shot if you're getting desperate. You can find your rep at leg.wa.gov and most have a specific staff person who handles ESD issues.

That's a great idea I hadn't considered. I'll look up my rep right now. Did you just email them explaining your situation?

Yes, I sent an email explaining how long I'd been waiting, that I'd tried multiple times to contact ESD with no success, and mentioned my financial hardship (bills coming due, etc). Include your full name, contact info, and claim ID if you have it. They usually have a form on their website specifically for constituent services.

I think it depends on why ur in adjudication. My roommate got stuck in it for like 3 weeks because he put the wrong last day of work on his application by accident. I was in adjudication for almost 2 months because my employer said I quit but I was actually laid off. They had to investigate and interview both of us. When they finally made a decision I got all the back pay at once tho, so that was nice. But it suuuuucked waiting for it.

Yeah it really does suck waiting! Did they tell you ahead of time that they needed to interview you? I haven't received any notification about interviews or additional information needed.

Nope! The interview request came totally out of nowhere. Just got an email one day saying I had a phone interview scheduled for the next week. Then the interviewer called exactly on time and asked me a bunch of questions about why I left my job. The whole thing took maybe 15 minutes.

My brother works for ESD (not in claims tho) and he says they're super backlogged right now because they changed some computer system in January and it's causing all kinds of problems. Lots of claims are getting flagged for adjudication that wouldn't normally need it. He said they're working overtime trying to clear the backlog but it's a mess.

OF COURSE THEY CHANGED THEIR SYSTEM AGAIN! Every time they touch their technology something breaks. Remember the disaster during COVID? They never learn!

This information about the system change helps explain the current delays. While waiting for adjudication, make sure you're fulfilling the job search requirements (3 activities each week) and documenting them properly. When they finally process your claim, they'll check that you've been meeting these requirements for each week you've claimed.

has anybody checked ur identity? sometimes they put u in adjudication if theres an identity verification issue. did u get any letters in the mail or messages in ur eServices inbox about proving ur identity? sometimes they send mail not emails

I haven't received anything about identity verification, either in the mail or online. My mailbox is right outside my apartment so I don't think I've missed any letters. Is there a way to check if this is the issue without getting through to someone on the phone?

not really, thats the problem. u kinda need to talk to someone. maybe try that claimyr thing someone mentioned if u cant get thru on ur own. better than waiting forever not knowing

One thing that might help while you're waiting: if you're experiencing financial hardship, you can request hardship expedited processing. Call the main ESD number and when the automated system picks up, immediately press * then 0, then 0 again. Sometimes this gets you to a person who can at least put a hardship flag on your claim. You might need to try multiple times, but it's worth the effort as hardship cases are supposed to be prioritized.

Thank you, I'll definitely try this trick tomorrow morning! At this point I'm willing to try anything. Really appreciate everyone's advice here - at least I know I'm not alone in dealing with this frustrating situation.
