First claim stuck in adjudication since December - no explanation from ESD
I lost my job (marketing director position eliminated) at the end of January and filed my initial unemployment claim on February 5th. It's now been over 6 weeks, and my weekly claims summary still shows my first claim as 'in adjudication' with all subsequent weeks as 'pending.' I haven't received ANY communication explaining why it's in adjudication or what information they need from me. I've been dutifully filing my weekly claims and documenting my job search activities (applying to at least 3 positions weekly as required). I'm getting really anxious as my savings are dwindling fast. I've tried calling ESD multiple times but either get the 'high call volume' message or sit on hold forever only to get disconnected. Does anyone know if this is normal? Should I just keep waiting and filing? Is there any other way to find out what's causing the adjudication delay? Thanks for any advice!

Unfortunately this is pretty common with ESD right now. My claim was in adjudication for almost 8 weeks before it finally moved forward. The system is supposed to tell you what's causing the adjudication (identity verification, former employer dispute, etc.) but often doesn't. Keep filing your weekly claims and make sure you're completing all 3 job search activities each week. You can try checking your notices section in eServices to see if there's any communication there that might explain what's happening.

•Thanks for responding! I've checked the notices section multiple times and there's absolutely nothing there. Did you do anything to move yours forward or did it just suddenly resolve on its own? I'm worried I'm missing something they need from me.

•Two MONTHS?? That's terrifying. I don't know if I can last that long financially. Did you ever find out what was causing the holdup?

This is a classic case of employer response delay. When you file, ESD contacts your former employer to verify the reason for separation. If your employer doesn't respond promptly (or at all), this triggers automatic adjudication. Marketing director positions often face extra scrutiny too since they're higher-level roles. Two things you should do immediately: 1. Upload a copy of your separation letter/email to your eServices documents if you haven't already 2. Contact your former employer's HR to ensure they've responded to ESD's inquiry I would also recommend sending a secure message through your eServices portal specifically asking what's causing the adjudication and if any additional information is needed from you.

•Thank you for the detailed advice! I didn't think about contacting my former employer. I left on good terms and was given a severance package (which I reported on my initial claim). I'll reach out to HR tomorrow and see if they've responded to ESD. I'll also upload my termination letter - great suggestion. I've sent three secure messages over the past few weeks and haven't received any responses though.

Have you tried Claimyr? I was in the exact same situation - stuck in adjudication hell for weeks with no explanation. I couldn't get through to anyone at ESD despite trying for HOURS every day. Someone here recommended Claimyr (claimyr.com) and it actually worked! They got me connected to a real ESD agent within about 20 minutes. The agent was able to tell me exactly why my claim was in adjudication (turned out my employer had disputed my reason for separation) and what I needed to do to resolve it. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Seriously saved my sanity.

•I hate that we have to use a service like this to reach OUR government agencies that WE pay for with OUR tax dollars!!! The whole system is broken. They should make it easier to talk to someone without needing some third party service!!!

•I hadn't heard of this before, but I'm getting desperate enough to try anything. Did you actually find out useful information when you got through? I'm worried I'll pay for the service and still not get any resolution.

i think its becuz of the new fraud checks they added in 2025. my neighbor works at esd and says they have to verify everyone's identity now before paying. did u upload ur drivers license and ssn card? they need both now but dont always tell u that.

•That's not entirely accurate. ESD has had identity verification protocols since 2021, but they don't require SSN cards from everyone. The system will specifically prompt you to upload identity verification documents if that's the issue. Adjudication is usually related to qualification issues, not identity verification.

My first ESD claim from January was also stuck in adjudication for several weeks. I finally got through to someone by calling repeatedly at exactly 7:59 AM right before they open. The issue in my case was that my former employer incorrectly reported my final day of work, which triggered an automatic investigation. Once I explained this to the ESD representative, they were able to resolve it and release my payments within 3 days. It might be something similarly minor in your case. If you can't get through by phone, another option is to contact your state representative's office. They often have dedicated staff who can help constituents with ESD issues and can sometimes get answers faster than you can on your own.

•Contacting my state representative is a great idea I hadn't considered. I'll try both the early morning call and reaching out to my rep's office. Thank you!

@OP any updates? Did you manage to get through to ESD or figure out what was causing the adjudication?

•I actually tried the Claimyr service that was mentioned above, and it DID connect me to an ESD agent within about 30 minutes. The agent told me my claim was flagged because I received severance pay but there was confusion about the payment dates. I had to upload additional documentation showing when I received the severance and how much it was. The agent said it should be resolved within 7-10 business days. I'll update again when/if it gets approved! Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions.
