Stuck in ESD adjudication for 5 weeks & starting new job - should I keep filing?
Ugh, I'm approaching week 5 of my unemployment claim being stuck in adjudication with ESD. Is this normal?? I've been filing my weekly claims faithfully but haven't seen a penny yet. The stress is killing me. To make things more complicated, I finally got a new job (starting next Monday!) but won't receive my first paycheck for about 2-3 weeks after I start. I'm totally confused about what to do with my claims now. Do I need to keep filing my weekly claims while in adjudication even after I start working? Or will this Sunday be my last claim? Also, how do I report that I've started working when I file? I've called ESD like 20 times trying to get answers about both the adjudication delay and what to do about my new job, but I just get stuck in automated phone hell. Never can reach a human being. Anyone dealt with this situation before?

congrats on the new job! yah the adjudication can take forever... mine took 7 weeks last year. total nightmare. but keep filing ur weekly claims until u get paid at ur new job! u gotta report when u start working on that weekly claim, but if u haven't been paid yet u still qualify for benefits those weeks. just make sure u report ur work hours even if u haven't gotten paid yet

•Thanks! So on the weekly claim I just indicate I've started working, enter my hours, but since I haven't been paid yet I put $0 for earnings? I'm nervous about doing something wrong and getting hit with an overpayment later.

5 weeks for adjudication is unfortunately common right now with ESD, though not acceptable. You need to keep filing your weekly claims even during adjudication so that when they finally approve your claim, you'll get paid for all eligible weeks. Regarding your new job: You need to report that you're working starting with the week you actually begin working. Report your hours worked that week, even if you haven't been paid yet. Your unemployment benefits will be reduced based on hours worked, not when you receive payment. Once you're working full-time hours (usually 35+ hours/week), you'll no longer be eligible for benefits regardless of when your first paycheck arrives. Make sure to answer all weekly claim questions accurately, especially the one asking if you've refused any work and if you're able and available to work full-time.

•This is RIGHT! i see so many people get confused about this. You report the HOURS you WORK each week, not when you get paid. ESD doesnt care when your paycheck comes, they care about when you actually did the work.

It's definitely frustrating that ESD is taking so long with your adjudication. Unfortunately, 4-6 weeks seems to be the standard timeframe for adjudication these days. As others have mentioned, continue filing your weekly claims throughout this process. For your new job situation: 1. Keep filing your weekly claims until you're working full-time hours 2. Report your work activity starting the first week you begin working 3. Report all hours worked that week, even if you haven't been paid 4. Answer "Yes" to the question about whether you worked that week 5. Enter your employer information when prompted 6. If you're working part-time hours, you may still qualify for partial benefits 7. Once you're working full-time (typically 35+ hours), you'll no longer qualify regardless of when you receive your first paycheck If you need to speak with ESD about your adjudication status, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was stuck in adjudication for weeks and couldn't get through on the phone until I tried their service. They got me connected to an actual ESD agent within 30 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 that shows how it works. It was seriously a lifesaver when I was in your situation.

•Thank you for such detailed instructions! That makes it much clearer. I'll check out Claimyr - at this point I'm desperate to talk to an actual human at ESD before I start my job next week.

I WAITED 9 WEEKS IN ADJUDICATION!!!! The system is completely broken. They just leave you hanging with no information and expect you to survive somehow. And then they wonder why people get angry when they call. DUH!!! Keep calling every day, different times of day. That's the only way I finally got through. The morning used to be better but now everyone knows that trick so try mid-afternoon. The whole "we'll call you back" thing is a JOKE. Never once got a callback even though I requested dozens.

•While frustrating, calling repeatedly doesn't necessarily help and may actually clog the system more. I worked with ESD before retiring, and claims in adjudication follow a specific workflow that's not impacted by call frequency. The best approach is ensuring all requested documentation is submitted promptly through your eServices account and continuing to file weekly claims while waiting.

Hit my 6th week in adjudication yesterday... still nothing. My landlord is getting antsy despite me showing him the ESD portal that proves I've filed. Does anyone know if there's a way to check WHAT exactly they're adjudicating in my claim? Like, what's the holdup? The online portal just says "adjudication in progress" but gives zero details about what they're investigating or what information they need from me.

•You can try checking your "Notices/Letters" section in eServices. Sometimes (not always) they'll send a notice explaining what issue is under adjudication. Also check your "Upload Documents" section to see if there are any pending document requests. If nothing appears in either place, then you'll unfortunately need to speak with an agent directly to get that information.

dont forgett to print out the weekly claim confirmation pages after u submit each one!! my frend didnt do that and when they finally approved him they 'lost' 2 of his weekly claims and he had to fight to get paid for those weeks. save everything!!!!!

•Oh wow, that's scary! I've been taking screenshots of my confirmation pages but I'll start printing them too. Better safe than sorry with ESD.

When I got my new job last month I kept filing until I got my first paycheck. Made sure to report all my hours worked even though I wasn't paid yet. I think my last benefit payment was reduced because of the hours, but I still got something since I wasn't full time right away. Just be super honest about the hours - they crosscheck with employers eventually.

•They ALWAYS crosscheck! My coworker tried to fudge his hours for two weeks and boom, six months later he got hit with an overpayment notice plus penalties. NOT worth it!

For context on adjudication timing: ESD currently has a significant backlog of claims requiring adjudication. The standard timeframe is 4-6 weeks, but can extend to 8-10 weeks during periods of high volume. The adjudicator reviews issues that could affect your eligibility, such as job separation circumstances, availability for work, or potential earnings discrepancies. Regarding your new employment: Continue filing weekly claims until you are working full-time hours (35+ per week). Report all hours worked in the week they are worked, regardless of when payment is received. Your benefits will be reduced according to your reported hours using a specific formula. Once you're working full-time, you can simply stop filing weekly claims - no need to formally close your claim. If you need to verify exactly what issue is being adjudicated, you'll need to speak with an ESD representative. Written correspondence about adjudication issues should appear in your eServices account under Notices/Letters.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation. It sounds like I should be approaching the end of the typical adjudication window, so hopefully I'll hear something soon. I'll keep filing my weekly claims and make sure to report my work hours accurately starting next week.
