Weekly ESD payment suddenly placed in adjudication - will I still get paid?

I'm freaking out a little bit here. I've been receiving my unemployment benefits consistently for the past 6 weeks without any problems. I file my weekly claim every Sunday night, and by Wednesday the money is always in my account. But this week, my claim status suddenly changed to 'adjudication in progress' after I submitted my weekly claim. I have NO IDEA why this happened - I didn't report anything different from previous weeks! I've tried calling ESD at least 15 times today but keep getting the 'high call volume' message and getting disconnected. I sent them a message through eServices this morning but haven't heard anything back. My rent is due next week and I NEED this payment. Does anyone know if they still pay your benefits while in adjudication? Or am I just not getting paid until this mysterious issue is resolved? How long does adjudication usually take? Any advice would be really appreciated!

Unfortunately when your claim goes into adjudication, payments are typically on hold until the issue is resolved. ESD has to determine if you're still eligible before releasing funds. The real problem is that adjudication can take anywhere from 1-8 weeks depending on the complexity of your case and their current backlog. Do you see any alerts or messages in your eServices account that might explain why you went into adjudication? Common triggers include: reporting earnings, changing availability status, missing job search activities, or an employer contesting something.

Thanks for responding. There are no alerts or messages in my account, that's what's so frustrating! Everything looks normal except for the status change. I haven't changed anything in my weekly reporting - still looking for work, still available, no earnings to report. Could my former employer have said something? But why would they wait 6 weeks to do that?

3 weeks?? I can't go that long without income. Did you ever get through to an actual person at ESD to figure out what was happening?

The exact same thing happened to me too! I was in adjudication for over a month with ZERO explanation. I contacted my state representative's office and suddenly my claim was fixed within 2 days! I swear the system is designed to make people give up. Call your local state rep's office and explain your situation. They have special contacts at ESD who can actually look into your claim and resolve issues. It's ridiculous we have to do this but it WORKS.

That's a great idea I hadn't thought of. I'll look up my rep's contact info right now. Did you just call their main office number?

Yep! Just called their office, explained my situation, and they had me fill out an authorization form so they could contact ESD on my behalf. The staff was super helpful - they deal with ESD issues all the time.

sometimes the adjudication is just a random audit thing and not bc u did anything wrong. my neighbor had this happen and he got all his back pay once it was resolved but yeah it took like 5 weeks which is insane!! good luck i hope u have some savings

Hey, I went through this nightmare back in February. What finally worked for me was using Claimyr to get through to an actual ESD agent. I was skeptical at first, but after two weeks of not being able to reach anyone, I tried it and got connected to an ESD agent in about 20 minutes. The agent was able to tell me exactly why my claim went into adjudication (turned out one of my previous employers questioned my separation reason) and gave me an estimated timeframe. While they couldn't remove the adjudication immediately, at least I knew what was happening and could plan accordingly. You can check them out at claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Definitely try the state rep approach too. The more help you can get, the better!

I'm going to try both approaches. Just knowing WHY I'm in adjudication would help me figure out how long it might take and if there's anything I can do to speed things up. Thanks for the suggestion!

ESD is THE WORST!!!!!! I've been dealing with them for months and they keep messing up my claim. They put me in adjudication THREE TIMES for no reason and each time I finally get someone on the phone they say "oh that shouldn't have happened" but it takes WEEKS to fix. The system is broken and they don't care that people can't pay bills while waiting for them to fix their mistakes. I'm so angry for you.

While I understand your frustration, sometimes there are legitimate reasons claims go into adjudication that aren't immediately visible to claimants. The system has automated flags that can trigger reviews based on employer responses, earning thresholds, or random quality assurance checks. To the original poster: Make sure you continue filing your weekly claims during adjudication. If your claim is approved, you'll receive all back payments for weeks properly filed. Missing weeks during adjudication is a common mistake that causes even more delays.

I've been doing my 3 job search activities every week and logging them in the system. I'm really careful about that because I know they can disqualify you if you miss them. That's why this is so confusing - I haven't changed anything in my reporting!

Just want to add one important piece of advice - document EVERYTHING. Keep a log of all your calls, messages, and attempts to contact ESD. Note dates, times, and any reference numbers. If you do manage to speak with someone, write down their name and what they told you. If this drags on and you need to escalate to the unemployment law judge or request a hearing, having detailed documentation will significantly help your case. I went through a similar situation last year and my meticulous notes were crucial when I finally got a hearing. Also, check if there are any documents in your eServices account that need your response. Sometimes ESD sends questionnaires that trigger adjudication until they're completed, but the notification can be easy to miss.

I just double-checked my eServices account and you're right! There IS a questionnaire I missed about my job search activities for last week. It wasn't there this morning when I checked (or I somehow overlooked it). I'll fill it out right away and hopefully that resolves the issue. Thank you so much for suggesting I look again!
