Approved with payments but now ESD adjudication in progress - what's happening?

I'm really confused about my ESD claim status right now. I was approved for benefits back on January 15, 2025 and have been receiving regular payments for almost 2 months with no issues. Everything seemed fine until last week when I randomly checked the "pending issues" section of my eServices account and saw "waiting for information." Now today it changed to "adjudication in progress" but my claim still shows as "paid" and I'm still getting weekly payments deposited. I stopped by the WorkSource office yesterday hoping for answers, and the person there just said there was "an issue with my claim" but couldn't tell me ANYTHING else - not what the issue was, not what I need to do, nothing! I'm freaking out because I don't want to suddenly have to pay back thousands if they decide there's a problem. Has anyone dealt with adjudication randomly appearing AFTER you've been approved and receiving benefits? What could this mystery issue possibly be? Should I keep filing weekly claims while this is happening?

This happens more often than you'd think. ESD sometimes flags claims for random verification even after they've been paying out. It could be anything from a former employer challenging your eligibility to a quarterly wage review where something didn't match up. The good news is that if you continue to get paid, it's usually not something catastrophic. Keep filing your weekly claims normally, and make sure you respond immediately if you get any requests for information in your eServices message center or via mail. Check your online account daily and your physical mail carefully. Sometimes they send important notices by regular mail instead of electronically. If you don't hear anything within 10 days, I'd try calling ESD directly. The WorkSource folks often don't have access to the details of adjudication issues.

Thanks for this info! I've been checking my eServices messages obsessively but haven't received anything there or in the mail. It's just weird that it went from approved to adjudication after almost 2 months. Should I be worried that they'll make me pay everything back?

OMG I had the EXACT same thing happen to me last year!! Was getting payments for like 3 months then suddenly saw "adjudication" on my account but still getting paid!!! It was terrifying cuz no explanation and I was sure I'd have to pay it ALL back. Turned out my previous employer filed some kind of protest late (like WAY after the deadline) and ESD still had to review it even tho it was late. The WORST part was no one told me ANYTHING. No letter, no email, no message in eServices. I found out when I finally got through on the phone after calling like 50 times. It eventually just disappeared from my account after like 3 weeks and everything continued normally. But those were a stressful 3 weeks!!!!

That's reassuring to hear it worked out for you! I'm hoping mine just disappears too. Did you ever get any formal notification about what happened or did it just go away?

What you're experiencing is actually a standard part of ESD's ongoing eligibility verification process. When a claim shows "adjudication in progress" but payments continue, it typically means they're conducting a non-urgent review that doesn't immediately affect your benefit eligibility. Some common reasons for this include: 1. Quarterly wage review where they cross-check reported earnings 2. Random fraud prevention audits 3. Late employer responses to your initial claim 4. System-generated flags from job search activity reviews The fact that payments are continuing is generally a good sign. However, you should absolutely keep filing your weekly claims on time and accurately. If ESD determines an issue that affects eligibility, they can retroactively apply that decision even after weeks of payment. One important thing to understand is that WorkSource staff have very limited access to adjudication details - they can see that there's an issue, but not what it is or how to resolve it. Only ESD adjudicators can address these matters.

This is super helpful - thank you! Sounds like I shouldn't panic too much yet. I'll definitely keep filing my weekly claims properly. Do you know how long these reviews typically take?

same thing happen to me. keep filing ur weeklys! took 5 weeks for mine to clear up and never got any explanation. was stressful but worked out fine

@OP to answer your question about how long - mine took 3 weeks and I never got ANY explanation! Just vanished from my account like it never happened!!! So weird!!

I know its extremely frustrating! I spent 2 WEEKS trying to talk to ESD about something similar. Would call at exactly 8am when they open and STILL couldn't get through. Always busy signals or disconnects after waiting on hold. Finally I tried using Claimyr (claimyr.com) after seeing it recommended here. They got me through to an actual ESD agent in about 20 minutes who explained my adjudication was just a random quarterly review thing. Nothing to worry about. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Serious sanity saver because otherwise I'd still be in the dark about what was happening.

Oh, I hadn't heard of this service before. I'll keep it in mind if I can't get answers in the next week or so. Was it difficult to use?

Super easy. You just enter your number and it calls you back when it's connected with ESD. Saved me from calling 100+ times and getting nowhere.

THEY'RE ALL INCOMPETENT!!! ESD is the WORST agency in the state!!! I had "adjudication" for EIGHT MONTHS and no one could tell me why!!! They kept paying me too and then SURPRISE - they wanted $12,000 back because some manager at my old job LIED about why I left!!! FIGHT THEM WITH EVERYTHING YOU'VE GOT!!! The system is DESIGNED to keep you in the dark!!

While I understand your frustration, most adjudication reviews that don't affect ongoing payments are resolved favorably. Overpayment situations typically happen when benefits are stopped pending adjudication, not when they continue during review. The OP's situation sounds like a routine verification rather than a disputed separation issue.

That's what I thought too until I got the overpayment notice!!! You work for ESD or something??? They ARE out to get people!!!

Just wondering if your claiming standby status? Sometimes they review those periodically to make sure your employer still plans to bring you back. That happened to me last year.

0 coins

No, I'm not on standby - this is a regular UI claim. I was laid off permanently from my position.

To answer your question about timing from earlier - these reviews typically take 2-4 weeks to resolve if there's no actual issue. If they need information from you, they'll send a request through eServices or mail, and the clock starts ticking from when they receive your response. The fact that you're still getting paid is a good indicator this isn't a high-priority issue for them. Make sure all your contact information is up-to-date in your account. Sometimes people miss important notifications because their email or mailing address changed.

Thanks again. I double-checked and all my contact info is current. I guess I'll just keep filing weekly claims and watching my account and mail closely.

anybody know if u have to report adjudication on weekly claim? theres no question for it but just wondering

0 coins

No, you don't need to report that adjudication is happening on your weekly claim. Just answer all weekly claim questions accurately based on your work and availability status for that week. The adjudication process is separate from your weekly claim filing.

Just wanted to update everyone - the adjudication status disappeared from my account this morning! Still no explanation of what it was about, but I'm relieved it seems to be resolved. I'm going to keep filing as normal and hopefully won't have any more surprises. Thanks for all the advice and reassurance!

YAYYYYY!!! So glad it worked out!! ESD is so weird sometimes lol

Great news! This is exactly how these routine reviews typically resolve - they just disappear without explanation. Glad it worked out for you.

That's such great news! I'm so happy it resolved itself for you. This gives me hope for my own situation - I've been dealing with a similar "adjudication in progress" status for about a week now, also while still receiving payments. Like you, I have no idea what triggered it and haven't received any communication about what they need from me. It's so reassuring to hear that these mystery adjudications often just vanish on their own. I'll keep checking my account daily and filing my weekly claims as normal. Thanks for coming back to update us - it really helps to know how these situations typically play out!

I'm glad my update could help ease your worries! It's such a stressful experience when you see that adjudication status pop up out of nowhere with zero explanation. The waiting and uncertainty is the worst part. From reading everyone's experiences here, it sounds like these mystery reviews are way more common than we realize. Keep doing exactly what you're doing - filing weekly and checking for any communications. Hopefully yours will disappear just as mysteriously as it appeared! Feel free to update us when it resolves.

I'm dealing with something very similar right now! Been approved and receiving payments since early February, then last week I noticed "adjudication in progress" appeared on my account with no warning or explanation. Like you, I'm still getting my weekly payments deposited normally, but it's nerve-wracking not knowing what's going on. I tried calling ESD multiple times but kept getting busy signals or dropped calls after long hold times. The uncertainty is really stressful - you start wondering if you did something wrong or if there's going to be some surprise demand for repayment later. Reading through all these responses is actually really comforting though. It sounds like these random adjudication reviews are much more common than I realized, and most people seem to have them resolve without any major issues. I'm going to keep filing my weekly claims accurately and check my account daily like everyone suggested. Fingers crossed it just disappears like yours did!

I'm in almost the exact same boat as you! Also approved in February and just noticed the adjudication status appear last week with zero explanation. It's so frustrating how they give you no heads up or context about what's happening. I've been losing sleep over this thinking I might have made some mistake on my claims or something. But after reading everyone's experiences here, it really does seem like these random reviews are just part of their normal process. The fact that we're both still getting payments is definitely reassuring. I'm going to follow the same advice - keep filing accurately and checking everything daily. Hope yours resolves quickly too!

I'm going through this exact same situation right now! I've been approved since mid-January and getting regular payments, then suddenly last Thursday I see "adjudication in progress" pop up with absolutely no explanation. Still getting my weekly deposits but I've been checking my account obsessively every few hours expecting the worst. What's really frustrating is how they just drop this status on you with zero context. No email, no letter, no message in eServices - just suddenly there it is making you panic. I called the customer service line about 15 times yesterday and either got busy signals or sat on hold for over an hour before getting disconnected. Reading everyone's experiences here is honestly the most helpful information I've gotten about this whole process. It's reassuring to know that these mystery adjudications are apparently pretty routine and most people have them resolve without major issues. I was convinced I had somehow messed up my weekly claims or that my former employer had filed some kind of complaint against me. Going to keep filing my weeklies accurately and checking for any communications like everyone suggested. Hopefully mine disappears as mysteriously as it appeared! Thanks for sharing your experience and coming back to update - it really helps those of us going through the same thing right now.
