Claim switched to 'Adjudication in Progress' after initial approval - no payments received
So confused right now! I received an approval email from ESD on March 15, 2025 and started filing my weekly claims immediately. Everything seemed fine until April 2nd when suddenly my claim status changed to 'Adjudication in Progress' without any explanation. I finally got through to someone at unemployment after trying for three days (seriously, their phone system is torture). The agent said they have all necessary documentation from both me and my former employer and are just 'reviewing' everything. But here's the thing - I haven't received a SINGLE payment since I started claiming, even for those weeks before the status changed to adjudication. Should I still expect to get paid for all weeks claimed, including the ones before adjudication started? And how long is this 'reviewing' process supposed to take? I'm getting really worried about bills piling up. Has anyone gone through this weird approval-then-adjudication process before?

This is actually quite common with ESD. What likely happened is that your claim was initially processed through their automated system (hence the approval email), but then got flagged for manual review during a secondary verification process. The good news is that yes, you should get paid for ALL eligible weeks once adjudication is complete, including those weeks before the status changed. The bad news is that adjudication timeframes are unpredictable - could be a few days, could be weeks. Since they already told you they have everything they need, I'd estimate 1-2 weeks. Just keep filing your weekly claims while you wait.

•Thank you!!! That makes me feel a bit better. I've been freaking out thinking I did something wrong or that they changed their mind about my eligibility. I'll keep filing weekly. Do you know if there's a way to check if they really do have everything they need? The person I talked to seemed kind of rushed.

OMG SAME THING just happened 2 me last month!!! Approved then suddenly ADJUCATION (is that even how u spell it??). Took them 3 WEEKS to figure out whatever they were figuring out and then one day BOOM all the money showed up at once. Almost gave me a heart attack seeing that much $$ in my account lol. Don't stop doing your weekly claims tho!!!

•Adjudication* but yeah ESD does this all the time. Their system is such a mess.

I worked for ESD for 8 years. Let me clarify what's happening: Your initial "approval" was just an acknowledgment that your application was accepted into the system. The adjudication is the actual determination process where they review your eligibility. This could be triggered by information from your employer, a discrepancy in your work history, or just random selection for review. Keep filing weekly claims as normal. If approved, you'll receive back pay for all weeks claimed. The average adjudication time currently is 17-21 days, but it varies based on complexity and current workload. One important tip: check your ESD online account and messages daily. Sometimes they need additional information but the letters get delayed in mail.

•This is really helpful info, thank you! I've been checking my online account but there's nothing in the correspondence section asking for more information. Should I be looking somewhere else on the site?

dont trust what they say on the phone half the time they just tell u what u want to hear i was told they had "everything they needed" FOUR TIMES and then suddenly they send me a letter asking for more info that "must be received within 5 days or claim will be denied" the whole system is designed to make people give up

•This is frustratingly accurate. I've had similar experiences with ESD. They told me everything was fine for weeks, then suddenly needed documentation from 2 years ago with an impossible deadline. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a senior agent who actually helped resolve it. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 showing how it works. It was the only way I could get someone to actually look at my file properly instead of just reading the notes.

my brother-in-law works with a lady whose cousin works at ESD and she said they're super backed up right now because they switched computer systems in February and tons of claims are getting flagged for no reason hope that helps

•This is partially correct. ESD did implement a system update in February 2025, but it wasn't a complete system change. The update did cause some issues with automatic eligibility verification, resulting in more claims being manually reviewed. However, they've been working through the backlog and processing times have improved in the last month.

One thing I forgot to ask - are you checking your banking info in the ESD portal? Sometimes they have the wrong account number and payments bounce back.

•Good point! I just double-checked and my direct deposit info is correct. Also checked my spam folder for any emails from them asking for more info but nothing there either. Guess I'll just keep waiting and filing weekly claims.

One additional suggestion: document EVERYTHING. Every time you call, write down the date, time, name of representative, and what they told you. If you ever need to appeal or prove you did your due diligence, this documentation is invaluable. Also, when you do get through to representatives, ask specifically if there are any "issues" on your claim that need to be resolved - sometimes they won't volunteer this information unless directly asked.

•That's smart advice! I'll start keeping a log. The rep I spoke with yesterday was named Marcus (or maybe Mark?) and he just said they were "reviewing" my claim but didn't mention any specific issues. I'll be more direct with my questions next time I call.

Just went through the same thing in January. I never got a straight answer about what triggered the adjudication after initial approval. Eventually they just started paying me. The whole process took about 25 days. Best advice is to keep claiming on schedule and document everything.

•Thanks for sharing your experience. Did you eventually get back pay for all the weeks you claimed during adjudication?

•Yep, got all the back pay at once. It was actually kind of nice getting that lump sum, though obviously would've preferred regular payments from the start.
