Claim suddenly put into adjudication - will ESD still pay weekly benefits during this process?

I've been receiving unemployment benefits since September without any issues. Then out of nowhere, ESD is saying they need more information and put my claim into adjudication last week. I sent them all the requested documents right away - paystubs, separation letter, everything they asked for. I even contacted the Governor's office for help with my case but that didn't seem to make any difference. My biggest concern right now is whether I'll continue getting my weekly benefit payments while they're making their decision? I have rent due next week and I'm seriously stressing out. Has anyone else gone through adjudication and still received payments during that time? Or am I just out of luck until they finish their investigation?

Unfortunately, when your claim goes into adjudication, weekly payments typically pause until they make a determination. This is one of the most frustrating parts of the ESD system. If your claim is ultimately approved, you'll get all the back payments for the weeks you filed but weren't paid during adjudication. But that doesn't help with immediate bills, I know.

Thanks for the straight answer, even if it's not what I was hoping to hear. Any idea how long adjudication usually takes these days? I've heard everything from a couple weeks to months.

same thing happend to me last month!! they do this to everyone i swear. its like they just randomly pick accounts to mess with

I don't think it's random. They have certain triggers in their system that flag claims for review - like if your former employer contests something or if there's conflicting information somewhere. But it definitely FEELS random when it happens to you!

When my claim went into adjudication in January, I actually DID continue receiving payments, but I've heard from others who didn't. I think it depends on the specific issue they're investigating. If it's something that might affect your basic eligibility, they tend to pause payments. If it's a smaller issue that just needs clarification, you might still get paid. Two things you should definitely do: 1. Keep filing your weekly claims even though you're not getting paid 2. Call ESD directly to ask about your specific situation and what triggered the adjudication The ESD phone system is absolutely terrible though. I spent 3 weeks trying to get through before I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a service that basically navigates the phone system for you and gets you connected to an actual ESD agent. Saved me hours of frustration. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3

Thank you! I'll definitely keep filing my weekly claims. I've been trying to call ESD every day this week with no luck. I'll check out that service - at this point I'd try anything to actually talk to a human being who can explain what's happening with my claim.

I'm going through adjudication right now too and it's been 6 WEEKS with no payment! The system is completely broken. I called over 50 times and either got disconnected or was told the wait time was too long. When I finally got through, the agent told me there was nothing they could do to speed up the process. I'm about to lose my apartment.

Hang in there! Have you tried contacting your state representative? Sometimes they can help push things through faster than going through normal channels. That worked for me last year.

The thing nobody tells you is that adjudication can happen MULTIPLE TIMES on the same claim. I've been on unemployment since October and had my claim go into adjudication in November, got it resolved, then AGAIN in February for a completely different reason! Both times my payments stopped. Make sure you respond to EVERYTHING they ask for immediately. Any delay on your part just extends the process. Also check your ESD account messages daily - sometimes they send requests there that don't come through email or regular mail (weird system design). The most important thing is to keep filing your weekly claims even if you're not getting paid! If you miss filing for even one week during adjudication, it can mess up your whole claim.

Oh no, I had no idea it could happen multiple times! Thanks for the tip about checking messages in the ESD account directly. I've been looking at my email but haven't logged into the actual portal as often.

Just to follow up: adjudication times are currently averaging 4-6 weeks according to what ESD told me when I called last week. It's longer than it used to be because they're short-staffed. Make sure you have documentation ready for whatever they're questioning - separation details, work search activities, etc. The more organized you are, the faster they can resolve it.

4-6 WEEKS?? That's insane! How are people supposed to survive that long without income? The system is completely broken if they can just cut people off for that long while they "investigate.

good luck getting any straight answers from ESD lol

While the system definitely has problems, this kind of comment isn't particularly helpful for someone who's desperately trying to navigate a complicated process. There are ways to get answers and resolution - they just take persistence and the right approach.

One more thing - if your claim is in adjudication because of an employer dispute (like if they're claiming you quit instead of being laid off), you should prepare documentation that supports your side. Texts, emails, the separation letter you mentioned. Adjudicators will look at both sides, but having clear evidence helps your case tremendously. Oh, and if you have immediate financial needs while waiting, you might qualify for emergency assistance through DSHS or local community organizations. Worth looking into if the adjudication drags on.

That's really helpful advice! I'm not sure why they put me in adjudication since my employer and I agreed on the separation terms, but I'll gather everything just in case. And I'll definitely look into emergency assistance options - thank you for mentioning that.
