ESD claim shows 'under adjudication' but still active - ID verification issue?

Just applied for unemployment last Thursday and I'm already confused. My ESD account shows my claim is 'under adjudication' but it also says 'active' and displays my weekly benefit amount. I had to send in my IDs after applying - could this be why it's in adjudication? Has anyone else dealt with this situation recently? I'm worried about how long this might take to resolve since I really need to start receiving benefits soon. Do I still file weekly claims while waiting for adjudication to complete?

This is actually pretty normal! When your claim shows 'under adjudication' but still displays as 'active' with your benefit amount, it typically means ESD has accepted your initial application but needs to verify something specific before payments can begin. Since you mentioned ID verification, that's very likely the reason. The good news is you're in the system and your claim exists - the adjudication is just ESD's way of ensuring everything is legitimate before they start paying benefits.

Thank you! That's a relief to hear. Any idea how long the ID verification usually takes? I uploaded my driver's license and SSN card right away.

im in the EXACT same boat right now!! applied 2 weeks ago and stuck in adjudication after sending my IDs. The website says adjudication can take 'several weeks' but doesn't say how many exactly... so frustrating when bills are coming due :/

Two weeks already? That's not what I wanted to hear... I was hoping this would be quicker. Did you try calling them to check on the status?

YES! Keep filing your weekly claims! Even if you're in adjudication you need to keep submitting those weekly claims or you'll lose benefits for those weeks. They'll pay you for all the weeks once they clear adjudication.

Oh! I didn't realize that. Thanks for the tip - I'll make sure to keep filing weekly.

The ID verification process is part of ESD's fraud prevention measures that they significantly enhanced in 2023-2024. Adjudication for ID verification typically takes 2-4 weeks if everything you submitted was clear and matches their records. If there are any discrepancies (like if your current address doesn't match what's on your ID), it can take longer. While waiting, make sure you: 1. Continue filing weekly claims without fail 2. Check your ESD account messages daily 3. Respond immediately to any requests for additional information 4. Keep your phone nearby as they sometimes call for verification If you don't see movement after 3 weeks, that's when you should try contacting ESD directly.

I had this exact situation back in January. Took almost 4 weeks for them to verify my ID and approve my claim. What's crazy is I got zero communication from them during this time - the status just suddenly changed from 'adjudication' to 'paid' one day. And yeah, definitely keep filing those weekly claims while you wait!

4 weeks?! That seems excessive just to verify an ID. Did you have any complications with your claim, or is that just the standard timeframe?

Have you checked if theres any alerts or "upload documents" requests in your ESD account? Sometimes they need more info but the notifications don't come through by email properly.

I just double-checked and don't see any alerts or requests for additional documents. Just the confirmation that they received the IDs I uploaded initially.

I went through the same thing last month and what worked for me was using Claimyr to get through to an ESD agent. I tried calling for days with no luck, then found this service at claimyr.com that got me connected to ESD in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The agent I spoke with was able to expedite my ID verification once I got through.

Yes, it definitely worked for me. Once I actually spoke to someone, they confirmed my ID verification was complete but stuck in their system queue. The agent manually moved my claim forward that same day.

@OP - To answer your question about the 4 weeks - no complications, just standard ESD slowness. Their verification department is seriously understaffed from what the agent eventually told me. My coworker had the same issue and hers took 3.5 weeks too.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll mentally prepare for a long wait then and make sure my budget can stretch. This is so stressful.

anyone notice how the ESD website always shows different info depending what time of day you check it?? my claim switched from adjudication to pending to adjudication again all in the same day last week! so confusing!!!

That's their batch processing system. ESD runs several automated processes throughout the day, and the status can change temporarily during these updates. The best time to check for the most accurate status is after 8pm when their daily processing is complete.

One other thing to check - make sure the IDs you uploaded are clearly legible. If they're blurry or have glare, the verification team might be struggling to read them. If you're worried about that, you can always upload them again (it won't hurt anything). Also, the ESD system actually places regular claims and ID verification in the same 'adjudication' category even though they're handled by different departments.

That's good to know! I'll double-check the quality of the images I uploaded. They seemed clear to me, but maybe they need to be better quality.

Update on my situation: I finally got through to ESD this morning after like 30 attempts calling. They said my ID verification was actually completed last week but the system hadn't updated! The agent manually released my payments. might be worth trying to call non-stop if you can.

That's great news for you! And definitely concerning that the system didn't update automatically. I'll try calling tomorrow morning - I've heard early morning right when they open is the best time to get through.
