ESD identity verification putting my claim in adjudication - will I be disqualified?
I filed for unemployment two weeks ago after being laid off from my warehouse position. My claim is now showing 'adjudication in progress' for identity verification issues. The ESD website says I need to wait for them to review my documents, but I'm really confused about what this means for my claim status. Does being in adjudication for identity verification mean my claim is already disqualified? Or is this just a normal part of the process? I uploaded my driver's license and SSN card through the secure message portal like they asked, but haven't heard anything back. This is my first time filing for unemployment and I'm getting worried about bills piling up while waiting.

Being in adjudication for identity verification doesn't mean you're disqualified! It's actually a pretty standard verification process, especially for first-time claimants. The ESD is just confirming you are who you say you are before they start paying benefits. Think of adjudication as an investigation period, not a denial. They're reviewing the documents you submitted, which can take some time (2-6 weeks unfortunately). Just keep filing your weekly claims while you wait, even though they'll show as 'pending' until the ID verification is complete.

•Thank you so much! That's a relief to hear. Do you know if there's anything else I should be doing while I wait? Should I be submitting job search activities even though I haven't been approved yet?

•3 weeks?! That's so long... are you still filing your weekly claims even though you're waiting?

Just to add some clarity here: adjudication simply means your claim needs additional review before benefits can be paid. Identity verification is one of the most common reasons for adjudication, especially since 2021 when ESD increased their fraud prevention measures. While in adjudication: - KEEP filing your weekly claims - Make sure your contact info is up-to-date in eServices - Complete your job search activities (yes, 3 per week) and document them - Check your ESD account messages regularly If they need additional documentation, they'll request it through your eServices account. A claim in adjudication is NOT disqualified - that's a different status entirely that happens after a decision has been made.

•wait do we seriously need to do job search stuff BEFORE the claim is even approved?? that seems like extra work for nothing if they end up denying you

After trying to deal with this exact issue last month, I finally got through to an ESD representative using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They can get you connected to an actual ESD agent who can check your claim status and sometimes even expedite the identity verification. Saved me weeks of waiting. Check out their demo: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!!! I was stuck in "identity verification" for SEVEN WEEKS in 2024 and nobody would tell me what was happening. ESD is DESIGNED to make people give up. They WANT you to get frustrated and stop filing so they don't have to pay you. KEEP CALLING THEM EVERY DAY until someone helps you!!!

•That's not entirely accurate. While the system can be frustrating, identity verification is actually a crucial fraud prevention measure. In 2022-2023, ESD prevented over $800 million in fraudulent payments through these verification steps. It's not designed to make people give up - it's designed to protect the system, even if the implementation is flawed.

my cousin had this happen last year and she just kept filing every week and eventually they approved her and she got all the back pay at once. it was like $4700 all at once lol

As others have mentioned, adjudication is different from disqualification. Here's what's actually happening behind the scenes: 1. When you filed, ESD's system flagged your claim for identity verification (this is routine for many first-time claimants) 2. Your claim is placed in an adjudicator's queue to review your uploaded documents 3. The adjudicator will compare your documents to the information in your application 4. If everything matches, they'll remove the hold and your pending payments will be released If there are any issues, they might contact you for additional documentation. Make absolutely sure you're checking both your eServices messages AND your personal email daily. If it goes beyond 3-4 weeks without resolution, that's when I'd recommend trying to contact them directly. And yes - definitely continue your job search activities and document them properly while you wait.

I really appreciate everyone's advice! I'm definitely going to keep filing my weekly claims and start documenting my job search activities. It sounds like the identity verification is just part of the normal process, even if it's frustrating to wait. I'll try to be patient for a few more weeks before I panic. If I don't hear anything by week 4, I might try that Claimyr service to get through to someone directly. Thanks again for all the helpful information!

•That's a good plan. One more tip: when you document your job search activities, be very specific. Include the company name, position, contact information, application date, and follow-up actions. ESD can audit these records up to a year later, so thoroughness now saves headaches later. Good luck!
