Stuck with 2 adjudications for 7 weeks - seasonal worker with new job offer can't reach ESD

I'm at my wit's end here! Filed for unemployment 7 weeks ago and my claim shows TWO separate adjudications (dated 3/12 and 3/20/2025). I've called the ESD number probably 50+ times and can never get through to a real person. I work in construction so I'm seasonal, and I actually had an offer letter for my spring position BEFORE I even filed for unemployment. I tried to include this info when I filed because I wanted to do everything by the book, but now I'm stuck in this adjudication limbo. My savings are nearly gone, and my new job doesn't start for another 3 weeks. Has anyone dealt with adjudications as a seasonal worker? Any tips for getting someone at ESD to actually look at my claim and clear these up? I'm seriously stressing about rent next month.

Seasonal work adjudications are super common but shouldn't take 7 weeks! They're probably reviewing your availability for work and whether you meet the "able and available" requirements while having a future job lined up. Have you checked your ESD portal for any messages or requests for documents they might need from you? Sometimes they need additional proof from seasonal workers.

I check the portal daily and there's nothing! No messages, no document requests, no explanation of what the adjudications are even about. Just two separate dates listed under "adjudication." It's so frustrating.

same thing happened to me last yr during my off-season. turned out they needed proof I was still looking for work EVEN THO I had a return-to-work date. make sure ur still doing ur job search activities every week!!! they're super picky about that

I've been doing all 3 job searches every week and documenting everything carefully. Even applied to a few winter positions just to show I'm serious about working. Still nothing from ESD!

After struggling for WEEKS with a similar situation (I'm in agriculture, so also seasonal), I finally got through to ESD using Claimyr. It costs money but honestly worth every penny when you're waiting on thousands in benefits. You just go to claimyr.com, they call ESD for you and then connect you when an agent is ready to talk. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The agent I spoke to cleared up my adjudication in 15 minutes - turned out they needed verification of my return-to-work date that somehow never showed up in my portal.

is that service legit? seems sketchy to pay money just to call unemployment

It's legitimate - basically just saves you from making hundreds of calls. They don't handle any of your personal info with ESD, they just connect the call once they get through the hold system.

The ESD SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY BROKEN!!! I've been dealing with these EXACT issues for years as a seasonal construction worker. They create these stupid adjudications for THE SAME ISSUES every single season even though nothing changes! Why can't they just note in their system that you're seasonal with a return-to-work date?? It's absolutely RIDICULOUS that we have to go through this EVERY SINGLE YEAR!!! The worst part is they'll eventually approve you but won't pay you the back weeks until you hound them repeatedly!!!

While I understand your frustration, ESD has implemented a new process for seasonal workers that should help. If you verify your seasonal status ahead of time through WorkSource and get your employer to confirm your return date using form 5640-C (Seasonal Employment Verification), you can now avoid most adjudications. This new process started in January 2025.

When you have multiple adjudications, it's typically looking at different eligibility issues. For seasonal workers, the first adjudication (3/12) is likely about your able and available status given your future job offer. The second one (3/20) might be examining whether you're actively seeking work despite having a return date. Here's what I recommend: 1. Continue your job search activities (all 3 per week) 2. Upload your offer letter to your ESD documents if you haven't already 3. Try contacting your state representative's office - they have special ESD liaisons 4. Check if you qualify for "standby" status which would waive job search requirements 5. Send a secure message through the portal specifically asking about each adjudication date The good news is that once approved, you'll receive all back payments. The system is slow but generally works eventually.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I didn't know each adjudication was for a different issue. I'll definitely try contacting my state rep's office - that's a great idea. I already uploaded my offer letter but I'll send a secure message specifically asking about each date.

did u check ur standby status? when i worked seasonal fishing i got put on standby and didnt have to do job search. u should qualify with ur return date

Standby status isn't automatic anymore - they changed the rules in 2024. Now seasonal workers need to specifically request standby through their employer, who must submit the request on the worker's behalf using the Employer Request for Standby form. Regular standby is limited to 8 weeks, though some industries have exceptions.

Update: I finally got through to ESD! Used the Claimyr service that someone suggested and got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. Turns out both adjudications were related to my seasonal status, but for different reasons. The first one was questioning my availability since I have a future job lined up, and the second was about whether I qualify for standby (which I didn't know was an option). The agent cleared both adjudications right away once I explained my situation. She said my claim should be processed within 48 hours, and I'll get all my back payments at once. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!

FINALLY some good news! It's still ridiculous you had to pay a third-party service just to get what you're entitled to, but at least you'll get your money now!

Great to hear! For future reference, seasonal construction workers can usually qualify for up to 12 weeks of standby if your employer completes the proper paperwork. This would waive your job search requirements. Something to keep in mind for next season.
