Claim stuck in pending for 6 weeks after ESD adjudicator contact - what to do next?

Really stressed out here! I'm on week 6 of my unemployment claim and I'm still showing as 'pending' with no benefits paid out. An adjudicator finally contacted me on January 3rd (about 3 weeks ago now), and I immediately answered all their questions over the phone. They said everything looked good and my claim should be processed soon. But here I am, nearly February, and my status is STILL showing 'pending' when I check online. No updates, no additional contacts, nothing! I've tried calling but can't get through - just endless busy signals or disconnects after waiting for an hour+. Has anyone else experienced this kind of delay even AFTER talking to an adjudicator? I'm getting desperate as my savings are almost gone. Is there anything I can actually do to move this along? Thanks for any advice!

Ugh same boat. ESD is so frustrating!! My claim was pending for 8 weeks even after adjudicator call. I kept filing every week tho and suddenly it all got approved at once. Hang in there!

Thanks for sharing your experience. Did you do anything special to get it approved, or it just randomly went through? I'm filing every week but it's so disheartening seeing 'pending' over and over...

The adjudicator contacting you is actually a good sign! Keep filing your weekly claims no matter what. Three things that might help: 1. Send a secure message through your eServices account specifically asking for a status update on your adjudication. Be polite but mention financial hardship. 2. Contact your state representative's office. They can sometimes expedite unemployment issues. 3. Try calling right when they open (7:00am) or in the last hour before they close (4:00pm). Sometimes those times have slightly better luck getting through. In my experience, sometimes claims get stuck in a verification queue even after adjudication. Don't lose hope!

Thank you for these specific tips! I didn't know about contacting my state rep - that's a great idea. I'll definitely try the secure message route first. Do you think I should mention the adjudicator's name who contacted me previously?

I've had this EXACT situation! An adjudicator called me, I answered everything, then nothing happened for weeks!!! The system is BROKEN. What finally worked was calling the technical support line (not the regular claims line) and explaining that I couldn't access my claim status correctly. They transferred me to a claims specialist who found my file was basically sitting in digital limbo 🤬 Fixed it that day.

It's 855-682-0785. But heads up, I tried like 23 times before getting through. ESD's phone system is THE WORST.

Hello, I work at WorkSource and while I don't work directly for ESD, I can offer some insight. After an adjudicator contact, claims can still take 2-3 weeks to process, especially if there were any discrepancies with your former employer's response. What often happens is your claim gets placed in a secondary review queue if the adjudicator flagged anything that needs verification. The best approach is to continue filing weekly claims (which it sounds like you're doing) and to document all your job search activities meticulously. If you go beyond 8 weeks total without resolution, that's when you should escalate through the Office of Administrative Hearings.

Thank you for this explanation! The adjudicator didn't mention any discrepancies when we spoke, but maybe something came up afterward? Is there a way to find out if my claim is in that secondary review queue you mentioned?

Unfortunately, the review queue status isn't visible to claimants in the eServices portal. But you can submit a secure message specifically asking: "Is my claim currently in the secondary review queue or pending employer response?" Sometimes this specific question will get you a more helpful answer than just asking for a general status update.

I know it's frustrating but try not to panic. I had a simillar situation last year where my claim was pending for 9 weeks total! What fiinally worked for me was using Claimyr to get through to an actual ESD agent. I was skeptical at first, but after trying to call literally 40+ times myself with no luck, I gave it a shot. Got connected to ESD in about 15 mins and they found my claim was stuck because of a system flag that needed manual override. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 - seriously saved my sanity!

I've never heard of Claimyr before. Is it an official ESD service or third-party? I'm getting desperate enough to try anything at this point, honestly.

It's a third-party service that basically navigates ESD's phone system for you and calls you back when they get an agent on the line. It's not affiliated with ESD but totally legit. I was concerned at first too, but after weeks of frustration I was willing to try anything. The key is that once you actually talk to a real person at ESD, many issues can be resolved on the spot.

my adjudicayter call was super confusing they asked like 20 questions about my last job and why i left but never explained what happens next. i was pending for 5 week after that but then suddenly got paid everything at once. just keep checking ur account daily thats what i did

This is actually common. Adjudicators are primarily gathering information, not making immediate claim decisions. Their notes go to a claims processor who makes the final determination, which is why there's often a gap between the adjudicator call and any status change.

did u check ur correspondence folder in eservices?? sometimes they send u letters asking for more info but dont email u about it. i missed one and it delayed my claim for weeks!!

That's a great point! I just checked and there's nothing new in there since the initial claim confirmation. I should probably check it daily though just in case.

The whole ESD system is deliberately designed to frustrate people into giving up. I was in adjudication for 12 WEEKS last year and every time I called they gave me a different story. "We're processing it" then "We need more info" then "It's with a specialist" - all lies to get me off the phone. The ONLY thing that worked was filing a formal complaint with the governor's office. Magically my claim was processed 3 days later. Don't let them wear you down!!

Wow, 12 weeks is insane! How do you file a complaint with the governor's office? Is there a specific website or process?

You can file it here: https://www.governor.wa.gov/contact/contact/send-gov-inslee-e-message - make sure to include your claim ID number, when you applied, details of all contact attempts, and specifically mention financial hardship. The more specific details the better.

Just wanted to add - while you're waiting, make absolutely sure you're meeting the job search requirements (3 activities per week) and documenting them properly. I've seen people finally get their claim approved only to discover they won't be paid for weeks where their job search documentation wasn't compliant. The ESD job search log in eServices is the safest way to ensure compliance.

Thanks for the reminder. I've been applying to at least 4 jobs a week and logging everything in the eServices system. At least that part should be covered when this eventually gets resolved!
