ESD claim shows 'paid' status on a holiday - is this normal?

Just checked my ESD account and was shocked to see my weekly claim already shows 'paid' even though today is Memorial Day! I filed yesterday evening and was fully expecting to be stuck in 'processing-ivr' limbo until at least tomorrow since government offices are closed. Has anyone else noticed faster processing times recently? Or is this just a system glitch and I shouldn't expect the money to actually hit my account until they're back open? I'm relatively new to unemployment (laid off 3 weeks ago) and still figuring out the patterns with payments.

Don't get 2 excited yet. Mine has done that before where it shows paid but then sits in that status for 2 days b4 actually getting deposited. Since banks r closed today for the holiday I'd expect it wont hit ur acct until wednesday at the earliest

Thanks for bringing me back to reality lol. So you think the 'paid' status is just the first step and not actual confirmation that the payment is being processed today?

This is actually normal and good news! The ESD system processes claims 24/7 automatically, even on holidays. The 'paid' status means your payment was approved and is being sent to your bank/card. However, because today is a bank holiday, the actual deposit won't process until the banks reopen tomorrow. If you have direct deposit, you'll likely see funds tomorrow afternoon or Wednesday morning depending on your bank's processing times. The old 'processing-ivr' delay has been significantly reduced since ESD upgraded their systems in late 2024.

OMG seriously?? I've been on UI since January and mine ALWAYS sits in processing-ivr for at least 24 hours even on regular weekdays. Maybe I need to check if there's something wrong with my account settings?

@anxiousclaimant - That could indicate an issue with your claim. There might be a flag on your account that's triggering manual review each week. I'd recommend reaching out to an ESD agent to check if there are any notes on your account or if you need to update something in your settings.

It's part of the automated system improvements ESD implemented earlier this year. Claims are initially processed automatically even on holidays, but the actual fund transfers still depend on bank business days. The 'paid' status is a positive sign that there were no issues with your weekly claim certification and the payment has been authorized. Just keep in mind that the bank processing will still take 1-2 business days from today. This is significantly faster than during 2022-2023 when even the 'paid' status could take 3-4 days to appear.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! That makes sense. I'm just relieved there's no issue with my claim. Waiting for that first payment was nerve-wracking enough.

wait till u have to do job searches!!!!! thats when the REAL nightmare begins....esdshowed my claim as paid for 3 weeks straight but then put me in adjudication for 'failure to conduct job search'even tho i did them all and logged them correctly. took FOREVER to fix

That's unfortunate, but it's important to note that job search issues usually only happen if there's a specific problem with how activities are logged. For most people, as long as you complete and log your 3 required job search activities each week, you won't encounter these problems. If anyone does face adjudication for job search issues, documenting everything carefully is key to resolving it quickly.

I had the same experience a few weeks ago and yes, it did actually process faster than expected! ESD has been going through some system upgrades. When I called to ask about it (took me THREE DAYS of calling to reach someone), the agent explained they've streamlined their automatic approval process. But if you need to talk to ESD about anything, I finally had success using Claimyr.com - it got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes after days of failed attempts. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Totally worth it for avoiding the constant busy signals and hangups.

Has anyone else used this Claimyr thing? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach ESD!

I used it last month when my claim got stuck in adjudication. It actually works! Got through to someone in about 15 minutes when I'd been trying for over a week on my own. The agent told me they're getting like 3000+ calls a day right now because of the tech layoffs.

My brother works in finance (not for ESD) and he says most government payment systems now run batch processes overnight regardless of holidays - the actual money transfer is what waits for business days. So the status change is probably legit, just won't hit your account until after the holiday. I remember back in 2021 during the height of covid it could take weeks just to see a status change!

Good to know! So much has changed since the pandemic. Makes sense they would automate more of the initial processing.

NOBODY KNOWS HOW ESD ACTUALLY WORKS!!! One week everything processes super fast, next week identical claim sits pending for days. One agent tells you one thing, another says completely opposite. It's all just random chaos and we're all just guessing!!!! 😫

While the system isn't perfect, there are actually specific reasons why claims might process differently from week to week. High-volume periods (like after holidays), system maintenance windows (usually Sundays), and claim-specific factors all play a role. If you're seeing inconsistent processing times regularly, it's worth asking an agent to check your specific claim details as there might be an account flag triggering additional reviews.

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses! Just wanted to update - the money actually hit my account early this morning (Wednesday), so it seems like the 'paid' status on Monday was indeed legitimate despite the holiday. The process was much faster than I expected!
