Does unemployment benefits affect credit score in Washington state?
I've been collecting unemployment benefits from Washington ESD for about 2 months now and I'm worried about how this might impact my credit score. Does unemployment show up on credit reports? I'm planning to apply for a car loan soon and don't want any surprises. Has anyone dealt with this before?

Unemployment benefits themselves don't show up on your credit report. They're not considered debt or credit activity. Your credit score won't be affected just by receiving UI benefits from Washington ESD.

•That's a relief! I was really worried about this. Thanks for clarifying.

•yeah but if you miss payments on bills because you're unemployed that WILL hurt your credit

The only way unemployment could indirectly affect your credit is if you have an overpayment situation with Washington ESD and they send it to collections. But regular UI benefits don't appear on credit reports at all.

•Good to know about the overpayment thing. I've been really careful about reporting my work hours correctly to avoid that.

•Wait, can Washington ESD really send overpayments to collections? That seems harsh.

Nora Brooks
•Yes, if you don't pay back an overpayment or set up a payment plan, they can refer it to collections after going through their internal collection process first.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD about a question on my claim status last month. Spent hours on hold. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to an agent in like 10 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me so much time and frustration.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it some kind of scam?

•It's legit. They just help you get through the phone queue faster. I was skeptical too but it really worked for me.

been on unemployment 3 times over the years and never had credit issues from it. only problem is when your income drops and you cant pay your regular bills on time

•That makes sense. I'm being really careful with my budget right now to avoid missing any payments.

For car loans specifically, lenders will ask about your income source. Being on unemployment might affect loan approval or terms, but that's different from credit score impact. You'll need to show your monetary determination letter from Washington ESD as proof of income.

•I have my monetary determination letter saved. Should I mention the unemployment income upfront or wait for them to ask?

Grace Johnson
•Be upfront about it. Lenders appreciate honesty and unemployment is considered legitimate income for loan purposes, just usually temporary.

•some lenders wont count unemployment as stable income tho so shop around

I'm so paranoid about everything affecting my credit score these days. It's good to know unemployment benefits aren't one of those things. The whole system is confusing enough without worrying about that too.

•right? like why is everything so complicated when you're already stressed about being unemployed

•The credit reporting system is separate from unemployment benefits. Focus on making your regular bill payments on time and you'll be fine.

What about when you go back to work? Do you need to report that to credit agencies or anything? I'm starting a new job next week and want to make sure I handle the transition properly.

•No, you don't report employment status to credit agencies. Just make sure you properly close out your unemployment claim with Washington ESD when you start working.

•Thanks! I'll make sure to file my final weekly claim properly.

The real credit impact comes from reduced income affecting your ability to pay bills. I had to use credit cards more when I was unemployed last year, which increased my utilization ratio and temporarily lowered my score.

•That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid. I'm living really lean right now to avoid using credit cards.

•Smart approach. It was temporary for me - score bounced back once I got back to work and paid down the balances.

One thing to remember is that unemployment benefits are taxable income. Make sure you're either having taxes withheld or setting money aside for tax time. Owing a big tax bill could indirectly affect your finances and ability to pay other bills.

•I opted to have 10% withheld for federal taxes. Good reminder about the tax implications.

•wait unemployment is taxable?? nobody told me that when i signed up

Nora Brooks
•Yes, it's taxable at the federal level and in Washington state there's no state income tax, so just federal. You can change your withholding preferences in your Washington ESD account.

I work in banking and can confirm that unemployment benefits don't appear on credit reports. We see them on loan applications when people list them as income, but they're not credit-related data. Your payment history on actual credit accounts is what matters for your score.

•That's really reassuring coming from someone in banking. Thank you!

•Do banks usually accept unemployment income for loan applications?

Riya Sharma
•It depends on the lender and loan type. Some count it as income, others prefer more stable employment. Each bank has different policies.

Just wanted to follow up on the Claimyr thing I mentioned earlier - I ended up using them again this week when I had a question about my job search requirements. Still works great for getting through to Washington ESD quickly. Really recommend it if you're having trouble reaching them.

•How much does something like that cost?

•They focus on the value of actually reaching an agent rather than the cost. For me it was worth it to avoid hours of calling and getting nowhere.

This thread made me realize I should check my credit report to see if there's anything weird on there. Been unemployed for 6 weeks and getting paranoid about everything financial.

•Good idea to check regularly anyway. You can get free credit reports from all three bureaus once a year at annualcreditreport.com.

The stress of unemployment is bad enough without worrying about credit score impacts. At least that's one less thing to stress about based on this thread.

•Exactly! This discussion really helped put my mind at ease about that aspect.

Anyone know if there are any other hidden ways unemployment could affect your finances? Like insurance rates or anything like that?
0 coins
Grace Johnson
•Insurance rates are typically based on credit score, driving record, and other risk factors - not employment status directly. Though if unemployment leads to missed insurance payments, that could be an issue.

•Makes sense. Just trying to think of everything since this is my first time being unemployed.

what about if you have to move because you cant afford rent anymore? does changing addresses hurt your credit?
0 coins
Grace Johnson
•Moving itself doesn't hurt credit, but breaking a lease early or missing rent payments would. Make sure to update your address with all your creditors when you move.

I'm actually in a similar situation planning to finance a car soon while on unemployment. This thread convinced me to go ahead and apply - worst they can say is no, and at least I know the unemployment itself isn't hurting my credit score.

This has been super helpful. I was putting off checking my credit thinking unemployment might have messed it up somehow. Now I feel better about looking.

One last thing - if anyone does end up with credit issues while unemployed, there are nonprofit credit counseling services that can help. Just wanted to mention that as a resource.

Really glad I found this thread. Was losing sleep over this credit score question. Now I can focus on job hunting instead of worrying about things that aren't even real problems.
