Does applying for Washington ESD unemployment affect your future job prospects or credit?
I've been putting off filing for unemployment after getting laid off 2 weeks ago because I'm worried it might hurt me somehow. Will applying for Washington ESD benefits show up on background checks when I'm job hunting? Does it affect your credit score or taxes in a bad way? I keep hearing different things from people and I'm not sure what's actually true. I could really use the money right now but don't want to mess up my future opportunities.

Unemployment benefits are a right you've earned through your work history - there's absolutely no negative impact on credit scores or background checks. Employers can't see that you filed for UI benefits and it won't show up on credit reports. The only 'effect' is that you'll owe taxes on the benefits you receive, but Washington ESD gives you the option to have taxes withheld.

•That's such a relief to hear! I was really stressing about this. So there's no permanent record that follows you around?

•Nope, no permanent record at all. The only people who know are you and Washington ESD. It's completely confidential.

I was worried about the same thing when I got laid off last year. Filed anyway and it was the best decision - got benefits for 4 months while job searching and no employer ever knew or cared. The money really helped me avoid going into debt while I found something new.

•How long did it take for your claim to get approved? I keep hearing the Washington ESD system is really slow right now.

•Mine took about 3 weeks to get the first payment, but that was pretty normal timing. Make sure you file your weekly claims even while it's processing!

Actually, there's a service called Claimyr that can help you get through to Washington ESD agents faster if you run into any issues. I found out about it when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Really saved me a lot of frustration trying to call Washington ESD directly.

•Interesting, I hadn't heard of that before. Did you have trouble reaching Washington ESD on your own?

•Yeah, the phone lines are always jammed. With Claimyr I got through to an actual person within a few hours instead of spending days redialing.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like it might be expensive.

•It's pretty reasonable for what it does. Way cheaper than missing out on weeks of benefits because you can't get through to resolve an issue.

The only real 'effects' of applying are positive ones - you get financial support while job searching, which actually helps you find better employment because you're not desperate. Studies show people who receive unemployment benefits end up in better-matched jobs because they can afford to be selective. Don't let stigma keep you from using a program you've paid into through your payroll taxes.

•I never thought about it that way - that it actually helps you find better jobs. That makes a lot of sense.

•This is so true! I was able to turn down a really bad job offer because I had UI benefits to fall back on. Ended up finding something way better a month later.

lol why would unemployment affect your credit?? that doesn't even make sense. its government benefits not a loan

•I know it sounds silly but I wasn't sure how any of this stuff works. Better to ask than assume!

•Not a silly question at all - lots of people worry about this stuff because there's so much misinformation out there.

The tax thing is real though - make sure you understand that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have Washington ESD withhold 10% for federal taxes when you file your weekly claims, or you can pay it all at tax time next year. I learned this the hard way and owed a bunch come April.

•Good point! I'll definitely have them withhold taxes if I file. Don't want a surprise tax bill.

•Yeah definitely do the withholding. I forgot to do it and ended up owing like $800 at tax time. Not fun.

Been on unemployment three times in my career due to layoffs and it never affected anything. Got hired for good jobs while receiving benefits, no one cares. The stigma is mostly in people's heads - employers understand that layoffs happen and most people need UI at some point.

•Three times?! That must have been stressful but good to know it didn't hurt your career progression.

•Yeah, unfortunately layoffs are just part of working life now. Each time I bounced back fine and employers were understanding about the gaps.

One thing to remember is that you need to actively search for work and document it. Washington ESD requires job search activities and they do check up on it sometimes. But that's actually a good thing because it keeps you focused on finding new work instead of getting comfortable on benefits.

•What kind of job search activities do they require? Is there a minimum number?

•You need to do at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. Can be applying for jobs, going to interviews, networking events, etc. They give you a list of what counts.

•They also waive the job search requirement for the first few weeks while you're getting oriented, so don't stress about it immediately.

I'm dealing with Washington ESD right now and honestly the hardest part is just getting through on the phone when you have questions. The online system is pretty good but sometimes you need to talk to a real person. That Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier might be worth looking into if you run into issues.

•Is the online system easy to navigate? I'm not super tech-savvy.

•It's not too bad once you get used to it. The weekly claim filing is pretty straightforward. The hardest part is if something goes wrong and you need help - that's when you need to call.

•The mobile app is actually easier to use than the website in my opinion. Makes filing weekly claims really quick.

Don't overthink this - just file already! You've been paying into the unemployment insurance system through your paychecks this whole time. It exists exactly for situations like yours. The longer you wait, the more money you're leaving on the table.

•You're absolutely right. I'm going to file today. Thanks everyone for all the reassurance and advice!

•Good luck! The process is way less scary than it seems from the outside.

One more thing - make sure you file ASAP because there's usually a waiting week where you don't get paid, and benefits are backdated to when you file, not when you lost your job. Every day you wait is money you can't get back.

Keisha Johnson
•Oh wow, I didn't know about the waiting week or that it doesn't backdate to when I got laid off. Definitely filing today then!

•Actually Washington eliminated the waiting week a few years ago, but you're right about the backdating part. File as soon as possible after job loss.

I used to work in HR and can confirm - unemployment benefits are completely confidential. We never had access to that information when doing background checks or reference checks. The only way an employer would know is if you voluntarily told them, and there's no reason you'd ever need to do that.

•That's really helpful to hear from someone who's been on the employer side. Makes me feel much better about this whole thing.

•Same here - worked in recruiting for years and unemployment never came up in any screening process. It's not public information.

•Plus most hiring managers have been on unemployment themselves at some point. It's really not a big deal in the working world.

The peace of mind alone is worth filing for benefits. Job searching is stressful enough without worrying about money every single day. Having that safety net lets you focus on finding the right opportunity instead of just taking the first thing that comes along.

•That's exactly what I needed to hear. The stress about money has been making it harder to focus on my job search.

•Absolutely! When you're not desperate for money you can negotiate better salaries too. UI benefits give you leverage.

Been reading this thread and just wanted to add - if anyone's having trouble with their Washington ESD claim or getting stuck somewhere in the process, definitely check out that Claimyr service. I was skeptical at first but it really works for getting through to agents when you need help. Way better than sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected.

•Good to hear another positive experience with that. I'll keep it in mind if I run into any snags with my claim.

•I tried calling Washington ESD directly for two weeks straight and never got through. Used Claimyr and had my issue resolved the same day. Sometimes you just need that extra help.
