Does filing for unemployment hurt your credit score - Washington ESD claim impact?
I'm about to file for unemployment through Washington ESD after getting laid off last week and I'm worried about how this might affect my credit score. I've heard mixed things about whether unemployment benefits show up on credit reports or if filing a claim somehow gets reported to credit agencies. My credit is finally in a good place after years of rebuilding and I can't afford to have it take a hit right now. Has anyone here had experience with this? Does Washington ESD report anything to Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion when you file?

No, filing for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD does not affect your credit score at all. Unemployment is an insurance program that you and your employer paid into - it's not a loan or debt. Credit agencies don't receive any information about your unemployment claim status.

•That's such a relief to hear! I was really stressing about this on top of everything else.

•Yeah this is correct. Been collecting UI for 8 weeks now and my credit score actually went up last month lol

unemployment benefits are completely separate from credit reporting systems. The only way unemployment could indirectly affect your credit is if you miss payments on existing debts because you're waiting for benefits to start. But the act of filing itself? Nope, no impact whatsoever.

•Good point about missing payments - I'll make sure to stay current on everything while waiting for my first payment.

•exactly, and Washington ESD has been pretty good about processing claims quickly lately compared to a few years ago

I was worried about the same thing when I filed last year! Turns out it's totally fine. The bigger issue was actually getting through to Washington ESD when my claim got stuck in adjudication for weeks. I couldn't reach anyone by calling their main number.

•Oh man, the phone situation is brutal. I've been trying to call for days about my pending claim with no luck.

•I ended up using this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual person at Washington ESD. Found it at claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Way better than spending hours on hold.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Did it actually work for you?

•Yeah, got connected to someone within like 20 minutes when I'd been trying to call for two weeks on my own. They were able to resolve my adjudication issue right away.

Filing unemployment absolutely does NOT hurt your credit. It's not reported anywhere. I work in banking and see credit reports all day - unemployment benefits never show up. What WILL hurt your credit is if you can't pay your bills while waiting for benefits to kick in.

•Thanks for the professional perspective! That makes me feel much better about filing.

No impact on credit at all. I've filed for unemployment twice in my career and my credit score was never affected. Washington ESD doesn't communicate with credit bureaus about benefit claims. You're overthinking this - just file as soon as possible because there's a waiting period before payments start.

•You're right, I should stop procrastinating and just get it done. Better to have the claim processing while I'm job hunting.

•Definitely file ASAP. The sooner you file the sooner you can start getting paid.

Been on unemployment for 3 months now and my credit score hasn't budged. If anything it's helped because I can still make my minimum payments instead of falling behind. Washington ESD benefits aren't a loan or anything that would show up on your credit report.

•That's exactly what I needed to hear - that it might actually help by keeping me current on existing debts.

•Same here, unemployment kept me afloat while job searching so I didn't have to max out credit cards

The credit agencies don't care about unemployment benefits at all. It's not debt, it's insurance. The only thing that matters to them is whether you pay your existing obligations on time. Filing for UI through Washington ESD is completely invisible to credit reporting.

•Yep, it's literally insurance that you paid premiums for through payroll deductions

I had this same worry and did a ton of research before filing. Unemployment benefits are not considered income for credit purposes and don't get reported to credit agencies. Your credit score calculation is based on payment history, credit utilization, length of credit history, types of credit, and new credit inquiries - none of which are affected by collecting unemployment.

•This is spot on. The five factors that affect credit scores have nothing to do with unemployment benefits.

Nope no credit impact. But heads up - if you have trouble reaching Washington ESD about your claim like I did, there are services that can help you get through their phone system. I used something called Claimyr after spending days trying to call on my own.

•Someone else mentioned that service too. Might be worth looking into if I run into phone issues.

Zero credit impact from filing unemployment. I've been through this process twice and monitored my credit closely both times. The only way unemployment could affect your credit indirectly is if the income replacement allows you to avoid missing payments you otherwise would have missed.

Steven Adams
•That's actually a positive impact then - helping me avoid missed payments.

•Exactly, it's actually protective of your credit score in that sense

Filing for unemployment is completely separate from your credit profile. Washington ESD processes insurance claims, not loans. Credit bureaus track debt-related activities - unemployment benefits aren't debt. You're good to file without any worries about credit impact.

I was paranoid about this too when I got laid off last year. Filed for unemployment immediately and checked my credit report obsessively for months afterward - nothing ever showed up related to my Washington ESD claim. Your credit score is safe.

Just to add one more voice to the chorus - unemployment filing has zero credit impact. The only financial thing that could hurt your credit during unemployment is if you can't make payments on existing debts. But the unemployment benefits themselves? Completely invisible to credit agencies.

No credit impact whatsoever. I actually had to call Washington ESD several times during my claim period and found this service Claimyr really helpful for getting through their busy phone lines. But yeah, zero effect on credit score from any part of the unemployment process.

Your credit score will be fine! Unemployment insurance is exactly that - insurance. It doesn't create debt or obligations that would be reported to credit agencies. File as soon as you're eligible and don't stress about credit implications.

Filing unemployment won't hurt your credit at all. The bigger challenge might be actually getting through to Washington ESD if you need to speak with someone about your claim. Their phone system can be a nightmare, but there are ways around it if you need help.

Since everyone's covered the credit aspect thoroughly, I'll just add that you should file online through the Washington ESD website as soon as possible. The process is straightforward and you'll want to get your claim started right away since there's typically a one-week waiting period before benefits begin.

Just wanted to echo what everyone else has said - zero credit impact from unemployment filing. I've been collecting benefits for two months now and my credit score hasn't changed. The unemployment system and credit reporting are completely separate worlds.

No credit impact at all from unemployment benefits. The only thing I'd watch out for is making sure you can reach Washington ESD if you need to discuss your claim. I had good luck with a service called Claimyr when I couldn't get through their regular phone lines - helped me resolve an issue much faster than trying to call on my own.

Unemployment filing = no credit impact. Period. It's not a loan, it's not debt, it's insurance you paid into through your paychecks. Credit agencies don't get any information about unemployment claims from Washington ESD or any other state agency.
