Does unemployment affect credit score - worried about Washington ESD claim
I just got laid off from my job at a tech company in Seattle and I'm filing for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I'm really worried about how this might impact my credit score. Does collecting unemployment payments show up on credit reports? I have a mortgage and car loan that I'm still paying on time with my savings, but I'm stressed about whether having an active UI claim will hurt my credit rating. Has anyone dealt with this before?

Unemployment benefits themselves don't directly affect your credit score. Washington ESD payments are government assistance, not debt, so they don't get reported to credit bureaus. What can hurt your credit is if you miss payments on existing debts because you're unemployed.

•That's a relief! So as long as I keep making my mortgage and car payments on time, my credit should be fine?

•Exactly. The unemployment claim itself won't show up on your credit report at all.

Been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years and my credit score actually went up during both periods because I was more careful with my spending and paid everything on time with the UI payments.

•That's encouraging to hear. How long did it take to get your first Washington ESD payment?

Christian Burns
•About 2-3 weeks after filing, but that was back in 2022. Processing times vary.

The only way unemployment could indirectly affect your credit is if you have an overpayment situation with Washington ESD that goes to collections, but that's pretty rare and only happens if you don't respond to overpayment notices.

•Wait, what's an overpayment? How does that happen?

•It's when Washington ESD determines you received benefits you weren't entitled to, usually because of unreported work or income. They send notices first and give you time to pay it back or appeal.

•Okay that makes sense. As long as you're honest on your weekly claims you should be fine then.

I was worried about the same thing when I filed last year. Had trouble getting through to Washington ESD to confirm my claim status and was stressed about everything. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Made the whole process way less stressful.

•How does that work exactly? I've been trying to call Washington ESD but can never get through.

•They basically call for you and get you connected to a real person at Washington ESD. Saved me hours of frustration trying to get through myself.

•Interesting, never heard of that before. Might be worth checking out if you're having trouble reaching them.

Your bigger concern should be making sure you meet all the job search requirements and file your weekly claims on time. Missing those requirements can disqualify you and then you'd really have money problems that could affect your credit.

•Good point. I need to set up my WorkSourceWA account and start logging my job searches.

Vanessa Figueroa
•Yes, you need to log at least 3 job search activities per week unless you're on standby with your employer.

•Wait I thought it was 2 job searches per week? Or did that change?

Vanessa Figueroa
•It's 3 activities per week for most people. Could be job applications, networking, career fairs, etc.

Been collecting UI for 8 weeks now and checked my credit score last week - it's actually gone up 15 points because I've been so careful with my spending and paying bills early.

•That's awesome! I guess unemployment forces you to budget more carefully.

•Exactly. Plus no more eating out for lunch every day or impulse purchases. Silver lining I guess.

Just make sure you don't apply for new credit cards or loans while unemployed. Even though UI doesn't hurt your credit, lenders still consider unemployment income as less stable.

•Good advice. I wasn't planning on any major purchases anyway until I find a new job.

•Yeah, most lenders want to see stable employment history. UI benefits don't count as employment income for loan applications.

The stress of being unemployed was killing me. Couldn't sleep, couldn't focus on job hunting. Finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and found out my claim was approved but stuck in their system. Agent fixed it in 5 minutes.

•Wow, that must have been such a relief! How long had you been waiting?

•Almost 6 weeks! I was starting to panic about my bills. Definitely worth using Claimyr to actually talk to someone.

•Six weeks?? That's insane. I'm only at 2 weeks and already getting anxious.

Credit monitoring services like Credit Karma will show you exactly what's affecting your score. I've been checking mine monthly since I got laid off and unemployment has never appeared as a factor.

•I should probably sign up for one of those to keep track. Better to know than worry.

•Yeah, most of them are free and send alerts if anything changes. Peace of mind is worth it.

My credit actually took a hit when I was unemployed but that's because I had to put groceries on credit cards for a few weeks while waiting for my first UI payment. The unemployment itself didn't cause it.

Raul Neal
•That makes sense. Did you recover once the payments started coming?

Louisa Ramirez
•Yeah, paid off the cards as soon as I got my backpay and my score bounced back within a few months.

•How much was the UI payment? Trying to figure out if it'll cover my basic expenses.

Louisa Ramirez
•Mine was about $550 per week. It's based on your previous earnings so everyone's different.

Don't stress too much about it. Washington ESD benefits are there to help you maintain financial stability while job hunting. Just stay on top of your existing bills and you'll be fine.

•Thanks for the reassurance. I think I was overthinking it.

•We all do when we first get laid off. It's a stressful situation but you'll get through it.

Pro tip: set up automatic payments for your essential bills (mortgage, car, utilities) so you don't accidentally miss one while dealing with the stress of job hunting and unemployment paperwork.

Raul Neal
•Smart idea. I already have most of them on autopay but should double-check.

Payton Black
•Yeah, one less thing to worry about when you're already dealing with filing weekly claims and job searching.

•Autopay saved me when I was on UI. Easy to forget due dates when your routine is all messed up.

Been wondering about this too since I might be getting laid off next month. Good to know UI won't directly hurt credit scores. Still nervous about the whole process though.

The real credit impact comes if you can't find work after your UI benefits run out. Washington ESD provides up to 26 weeks typically, so use that time wisely to find something new.

•26 weeks should hopefully be enough time. The job market seems pretty active in Seattle right now.

•Yeah, tech jobs are still out there. Just might take longer than before to find the right fit.

•I found a new job after 12 weeks on UI. The benefits gave me time to be selective instead of taking the first offer.

One thing to watch out for - if you have any issues with your claim getting stuck in adjudication or something, don't let it drag on. I used Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD when my payments stopped randomly after 4 weeks. Turned out to be a simple system glitch.

•Good to know there's a way to actually reach someone if problems come up. The phone system seems impossible otherwise.

Edward McBride
•Yeah, I must have tried calling 100 times before finding that service. Much easier than the regular phone maze.

Bottom line - unemployment benefits are designed to prevent financial hardship, not cause it. As long as you use them responsibly and keep paying your existing debts, your credit should be fine or even improve.
