Does unemployment show up on a credit check Washington ESD benefits
I'm about to apply for a car loan and I'm worried about my credit. I've been collecting unemployment benefits from Washington ESD for the past 4 months while looking for work. Will the fact that I'm receiving UI benefits show up when they run my credit check? I don't want this to hurt my chances of getting approved. Has anyone here applied for credit while on unemployment?

No, unemployment benefits don't appear on credit reports. Credit reports show your payment history with creditors, not your income sources. Washington ESD payments are government benefits, not debt, so they won't be listed.

•That's a relief! So they won't see that I'm collecting UI benefits at all?

•Correct, they won't see your unemployment status from the credit report itself. However, they may ask about your income during the application process.

•Good to know, thanks! Did you mention the unemployment when they asked about income?

•yeah i was honest about it, some lenders are ok with unemployment income but others aren't

Your credit report will only show accounts you have with creditors - credit cards, loans, mortgages, etc. It shows your payment history on those accounts. Washington ESD unemployment benefits are not credit accounts, so they don't appear. However, if you've missed payments on existing accounts due to reduced income, those missed payments WOULD show up.

•This is exactly right. I work in lending and we see credit reports all day. Government benefits never appear on them.

•Thankfully I've kept up with all my payments so far. The unemployment has been enough to cover my basics.

I actually had trouble getting my claim processed last month and couldn't reach anyone at Washington ESD for weeks. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Super helpful when you can't get through the normal way.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay to reach our own unemployment office.

•I was frustrated about that too at first, but honestly it was worth it to finally get my claim moving. The alternative was waiting weeks more without any income.

•Good to know that exists. I haven't had issues with my weekly claims yet but it's nice to know there's a backup option.

The bigger issue is that some lenders won't count unemployment income toward your debt-to-income ratio. They want to see stable employment income. So even though it won't hurt your credit score, it might still affect loan approval.

•Oh no, really? I was hoping the unemployment income would count since it's regular payments.

•It depends on the lender. Some will count it, others won't. You'll need to ask when you apply.

•Credit unions are often more flexible about this than big banks in my experience.

wait so if unemployment doesnt show up on credit reports how do they verify your income then??

•They ask for documentation - usually pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements. For unemployment, you'd show your Washington ESD benefit statements.

•oh ok that makes sense, thanks

I got approved for a credit card while on unemployment last year. They asked about my income and I was honest about receiving UI benefits. Still got approved with a decent limit.

•That's encouraging! What kind of credit score did you have at the time?

•Around 720. Having good credit history definitely helped even though my income was lower.

The credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion) don't have access to Washington ESD records. They only report what creditors send them about your payment behavior. Government benefits aren't debt, so they don't get reported.

•Makes sense when you explain it that way. I was worried for nothing.

•Exactly right. People confuse background checks with credit checks sometimes.

been dealing with adjudication issues for months now, still waiting for my claim to be approved. this whole process is such a nightmare

•That's exactly the kind of situation where Claimyr really helps. When you're stuck in adjudication limbo and can't get through to anyone.

•might have to look into that, ive called hundreds of times

•Adjudication can take forever unfortunately. Have you checked if there are any outstanding issues in your account that need documentation?

Your unemployment benefits are private information. Credit reporting agencies don't have access to Washington ESD records and wouldn't include that information even if they did. The only way a lender would know is if you tell them or they see the deposits in your bank statements.

•Good point about bank statements. I should probably open a separate account for the unemployment deposits.

•That's not necessary unless you want to. Just be prepared to explain the deposits if they ask about them.

I work for a credit union and can confirm unemployment benefits never appear on credit reports. We see thousands of credit reports and they only show credit accounts and public records like bankruptcies.

•Do you guys count unemployment income when calculating debt-to-income ratios?

•We do on a case-by-case basis, especially if the person is actively job searching and has good credit history.

IMPORTANT: While unemployment doesn't appear on credit reports, if you fall behind on existing debts because of reduced income, those missed payments WILL show up and hurt your credit score. Make sure you keep up with minimum payments on everything.

•Definitely! I've been careful to prioritize my credit card and loan payments even though money is tight.

•Smart approach. It's better to cut other expenses than miss debt payments during unemployment.

The confusion might come from employment verification services that some creditors use. Those are different from credit reports and would only be used if you claimed to be employed when you're actually on unemployment.

Ava Thompson
•I'm planning to be completely honest about my employment status, so that shouldn't be an issue.

•Perfect. Honesty is always the best policy with lenders, and unemployment income can still qualify you for many types of credit.

•What kind of issues were flagging your weekly claims? I'm worried about that happening to me.

•first time was a job search requirement question, second time they needed additional verification of my work history. both times the agents were able to clear it up quickly once i got through

Bottom line: credit reports show your borrowing and payment history, not your income sources. Washington ESD unemployment benefits are income, not credit, so they don't appear. You're good to go with your loan application!
