Can you DoorDash while on Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I've been on unemployment for about 6 weeks now and money is getting really tight. I was thinking about doing some DoorDash deliveries on weekends to make ends meet, but I'm not sure if this will mess up my Washington ESD benefits. Do I need to report gig work like DoorDash on my weekly claims? Will they reduce my benefits or disqualify me completely? I really don't want to screw this up but I need the extra income.

Yes, you absolutely need to report ALL work including DoorDash on your weekly claims. Washington ESD considers gig work as employment and you have to report the gross earnings before any deductions. They'll reduce your benefits dollar for dollar after the first $5 you earn each week.

•So if I make $100 doing DoorDash one week, they'll take $95 off my unemployment check?

Oliver Schmidt
•Exactly. You get to keep the first $5 without it affecting your benefits, but everything above that reduces your UI payment.

I did DoorDash while on unemployment last year and had no issues as long as I reported everything correctly. The key is being honest on your weekly claims about hours worked and money earned.

•Did you have to do anything special with taxes since you were getting both unemployment and 1099 income?

•Yeah, you'll get both a 1099-G from Washington ESD for your unemployment and a 1099-NEC from DoorDash. Just make sure to save money for taxes since neither one withholds enough.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this exact question last month and could never get through to an actual person. Their phone system is absolutely useless - I probably called 200+ times over two weeks. Finally found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent in like 10 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Totally worth it when you need real answers about gig work and benefits.

•How much does that cost? I'm barely scraping by as it is.

•It's way cheaper than losing your benefits because you reported something wrong. Check out claimyr.com for details.

•I used Claimyr too when I had questions about part-time work. Super easy and the agent I talked to was really helpful explaining how the earnings deduction works.

Just make sure you're still meeting your job search requirements even if you're doing DoorDash. You still need to apply for regular full-time jobs and keep your job search log updated.

•Good point, I've been so focused on the money aspect I forgot about that.

DONT DO IT!!! I did Uber Eats for like 3 weeks and forgot to report it on one of my weekly claims and they hit me with an overpayment notice for $1,200. Now I have to pay it all back plus penalties. The system is set up to screw you over.

•That's exactly why you have to be super careful about reporting everything. One mistake and you're in a world of hurt with overpayments.

•Yeah and good luck trying to appeal it. Their appeal process is a joke too.

I've been doing food delivery on and off while collecting UI. The trick is to keep really good records of your earnings and hours. I use a spreadsheet to track everything so I don't mess up my weekly claims.

•That's smart. Do you track miles and expenses too for tax purposes?

Ravi Sharma
•Absolutely. Gas, car maintenance, phone bills - all deductible business expenses. Save every receipt.

wait so if I make more money doing doordash than my unemployment pays me, do I still get unemployment?

•No, if your gig work earnings exceed your weekly benefit amount, you won't get any unemployment that week. But your claim stays active so you can still certify the following week if your earnings go down.

I tried this exact same thing and it was a nightmare. Washington ESD's online system kept glitching when I tried to report my DoorDash earnings. Took me 3 hours on hold to get someone to fix it manually.

•Their website is garbage. Half the time it doesn't even load properly.

•Tell me about it. And don't even get me started on trying to use it on mobile.

Pro tip: if you're going to do gig work, try to bunch it all into certain weeks instead of spreading it out. That way you have some weeks with no earnings where you get your full unemployment check.

•That's actually really smart advice. Work hard some weeks and take others off.

•Just make sure you're still doing your required job searches even on the weeks you're not doing gig work.

Does anyone know if Washington ESD counts the time spent driving to pick up orders as work hours? Like if I spend 30 minutes driving to a restaurant but don't get an order, does that count?

Oliver Schmidt
•Generally they only count time when you're actually working or on an active delivery. But this is the kind of specific question where you'd want to talk to an actual agent to be sure.

•This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr to talk to someone. Too many gray areas with gig work reporting.

been doing instacart and doordash for months while on unemployment, never had an issue as long as you report correctly. just be honest and keep good records

•How do you handle reporting tips? Do those count as earnings too?

Sean O'Connor
•yep tips count too, you have to report your total gross including tips

The whole system is ridiculous. They encourage you to look for work but then penalize you for actually making money. Make it make sense.

•I mean, the point is to replace lost wages temporarily, not to give you free money on top of other income.

•I get that but when jobs are scarce and rent is due, people need options.

Important to remember that doing gig work doesn't stop your benefit year from counting down. So even if you make enough from DoorDash that you don't get UI some weeks, those weeks still count against your total claim duration.

Amina Diop
•Wait, so I could run out of weeks even if I didn't collect benefits some of those weeks?
0 coins
CyberNinja
•Exactly. Your benefit year is 52 weeks regardless of whether you collect every week or not.

I had to deal with Washington ESD flagging my account for review because my DoorDash earnings were inconsistent week to week. Took 6 weeks to resolve and they held up all my payments. Be prepared for potential delays if your gig income varies a lot.

•That's terrifying. How did you finally get it resolved?

•Had to provide bank statements, DoorDash payment records, everything. It was a huge pain but eventually they cleared it up.

For what it's worth, I found DoorDash earnings pretty unpredictable. Some weeks I'd make $300, other weeks barely $50. Made it hard to budget when I never knew what my total income would be between UI and gig work.

•Yeah that's what I'm worried about. At least unemployment is consistent.

Just remember you're still technically unemployed even if you're doing gig work. You have to remain able and available for full-time employment. If Washington ESD thinks you're too busy with DoorDash to take a regular job, that could be an issue.

•How would they even know how much time you're spending on it though?

Yuki Tanaka
•They can see your reported hours and earnings. If you're consistently working 40+ hours a week doing deliveries, that might raise red flags.

MidnightRider
Bottom line: yes you can do DoorDash while on unemployment but you MUST report all earnings and hours worked. Don't try to hide it or you'll end up with overpayment issues that are way worse than just having your benefits reduced.
