Can you do Instacart while on Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I've been on unemployment for about 6 weeks now and money is getting really tight. I'm thinking about doing some Instacart deliveries on the weekends to make extra cash, but I'm worried about how this might affect my Washington ESD benefits. Do I need to report gig work like Instacart? Will they reduce my weekly benefit amount? I don't want to mess up my claim but I really need the extra income right now.

Yes, you absolutely need to report ALL earnings to Washington ESD, including gig work like Instacart. When you file your weekly claim, there's a section asking about any work performed and wages earned. You have to report gross earnings (before taxes) for that week, even if it's just $20 from a few deliveries.

•Thanks for the info. Do you know if they reduce my benefits dollar for dollar or is there some kind of allowance?

•In Washington, you can earn up to your weekly benefit amount plus $5 before they start reducing your UI payment. So if your weekly benefit is $400, you can earn up to $405 and still get your full unemployment check.

I've been doing DoorDash while collecting unemployment and it's been fine as long as I report everything correctly. The key is being honest on your weekly claims. Washington ESD has access to wage databases so they'll find out if you don't report income.

•Good to know! How do you keep track of your earnings for reporting? Do you just use the app summaries?

Vincent Bimbach
•I keep a simple spreadsheet with dates and amounts. The gig apps usually have weekly summaries too, but I like having my own records just in case.

Just be careful about the job search requirements too. You still need to be actively looking for work and available for full-time employment. Don't let the gig work interfere with your job search activities or make you unavailable for interviews.

•That's a good point. I'm definitely still looking for full-time work, just need something to help with bills in the meantime.

•Yeah the availability requirement is important. If you're doing Instacart during normal business hours when employers might want to interview you, that could be an issue.

I had questions about reporting gig work earnings and couldn't get through to Washington ESD on the phone for weeks. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an actual agent who explained exactly how to report my Uber earnings. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way easier than trying to call yourself.

•That sounds helpful! I've been trying to call Washington ESD but always get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting forever.

•Never heard of Claimyr but honestly anything is better than trying to get through to Washington ESD directly. Their phone system is a nightmare.

Make sure you understand the difference between employee wages and self-employment income. Instacart drivers are independent contractors, so technically it's self-employment income. You still report it the same way on your weekly claims, but for tax purposes it's different.

•Oh I didn't think about the tax implications. Do I need to set aside money for taxes on the Instacart earnings?
0 coins
Angelina Farar
•Yes, definitely set aside about 25-30% for taxes since they won't withhold anything. You'll get a 1099 at the end of the year instead of a W-2.

been doing instacart for months while on UI, just report everything and you'll be fine. the extra money really helps

•How much are you typically making per week with Instacart? Just trying to get an idea if it's worth the time.

•depends on area and how much you work but i usually make 200-300 extra per week doing it part time

Word of caution - make sure you're still meeting the job search requirements. Washington ESD requires 3 job contacts per week and you need to log them in your job search record. Don't let gig work become an excuse to slack on the job search requirements.

•Definitely planning to keep up with job applications. The gig work is just temporary to help with expenses.

•Good attitude. Washington ESD does audit job search records, so make sure you're documenting everything properly.

The unemployment system is so confusing with all these rules. Why can't they just let people work part-time without all the complicated reporting requirements?
0 coins
Skylar Neal
•I get the frustration, but the reporting requirements exist to prevent fraud and ensure benefits go to people who actually need them.

Jessica Nolan
•I guess that makes sense, just seems like a lot of bureaucracy for people who are already struggling.

Pro tip: keep all your receipts for car expenses, phone usage, etc. if you're doing gig work. You can deduct those business expenses when you file taxes, which helps offset some of the self-employment tax burden.

Brady Clean
•That's really helpful advice, thanks! I wouldn't have thought about tracking business expenses.

•Yes, mileage deduction alone can save you a significant amount. Track every mile you drive for Instacart.

Also remember that if your gig work earnings plus your unemployment benefits exceed your previous regular wages, Washington ESD might question whether you're truly unemployed or just choosing to work less. Don't abuse the system.

•Good point. I'm definitely not trying to game the system, just need to pay bills while looking for a real job.

•As long as you're honest about everything and actively job searching, you should be fine. The system is designed to help people transition back to full employment.

Update on the Claimyr thing - I used it again last week when I had questions about reporting some freelance work. Got through to an Washington ESD agent in about 10 minutes instead of spending hours trying to call. Totally worth it when you need actual answers about complex situations.

•I'm definitely going to check that out. Sounds way better than the endless busy signals.

•might try this myself, been trying to get through to ask about something for weeks

One more thing to consider - make sure your car insurance covers commercial use if you're doing delivery work. Regular personal auto insurance might not cover accidents while you're working for Instacart.

Brady Clean
•Oh wow, I hadn't thought about insurance coverage. I should probably call my insurance company to ask about that.

Vincent Bimbach
•Yeah, some insurance companies offer rideshare/delivery coverage as an add-on. It's usually pretty cheap compared to the risk.

Just to recap the main points: 1) Report all gig work earnings on your weekly claims 2) Keep detailed records 3) Continue job searching 4) Set aside money for taxes 5) Check insurance coverage. Did I miss anything important?

•That covers the basics. I'd add that if you have any doubts about how to report something, it's better to ask Washington ESD directly than to guess.

•This has been super helpful everyone. I feel much more confident about doing some gig work now that I understand the requirements.

Thanks everyone for all the great advice! I'm going to start with just a few hours on weekends to test it out and see how the reporting process works. Really appreciate all the detailed responses.

Final reminder - document everything! Keep records of your earnings, your job search activities, and any communications with Washington ESD. Good record keeping protects you if there are ever any questions about your claim.

Brady Clean
•Definitely will do. I've learned that lesson the hard way with other bureaucratic stuff in the past.

•Good advice. And if you do run into issues or have complex questions, services like Claimyr can help you get through to someone who can give you official answers instead of guessing.

Hope your job search goes well! The gig work should help bridge the gap until you find something permanent. Just remember it's temporary income, not a long-term solution.

Brady Clean
•Absolutely. I'm viewing it as a stopgap measure while I continue looking for full-time employment. Thanks again everyone!

This whole conversation makes me realize how complicated the unemployment system is. Seems like you need a law degree just to understand all the rules and requirements.
0 coins
Skylar Neal
•It is complex, but that's partly because it has to balance helping people with preventing fraud. Once you understand the basics, it's not too bad.

Norah Quay
•The key is asking questions when you're unsure rather than trying to figure it out on your own. Better safe than sorry with unemployment benefits.

One last tip - if you do well with Instacart and like the flexibility, consider other gig platforms too like DoorDash or Uber Eats. Diversifying can help you earn more consistently, just remember to report everything.

Brady Clean
•That's a good idea for later. I want to get comfortable with one platform first before adding others.

Just wanted to mention again that Claimyr has been a lifesaver for getting through to Washington ESD when I needed clarification on reporting requirements. The peace of mind of talking to an actual agent is worth it when you're dealing with benefit compliance issues.

•Having a reliable way to reach Washington ESD is valuable. Their regular phone system is basically unusable most of the time.
