Can you have a part time job while on unemployment with Washington ESD?
I've been on UI for about 6 weeks now and just got offered a part-time position at a local retail store, maybe 15-20 hours per week. I'm worried about how this affects my Washington ESD benefits. Do I need to report this income when I file my weekly claims? Will they reduce my payments or cut me off completely? I really need some income but don't want to mess up my unemployment claim. Has anyone dealt with this situation before?

Yes, you can absolutely work part-time while collecting unemployment in Washington! You just need to report all your earnings when you file your weekly claim. Washington ESD uses a formula to calculate how much they'll deduct from your weekly benefit amount based on what you earn.

•That's a relief! Do you know roughly how much they deduct? Like if I make $200 that week, do they take $200 off my unemployment?

•No it's not dollar for dollar. Washington has a partial earnings deduction formula. Generally they subtract about 75% of your gross earnings from your weekly benefit amount, but there are some calculations involved.

Just make sure you report EVERYTHING when you do your weekly claims. Even if it's just a few hours, report it. I learned this the hard way - got an overpayment notice later because I thought small amounts didn't matter.

•Oh wow, how much was the overpayment? That sounds scary.

•It was like $800 that I had to pay back. Not fun, but totally my fault for not reporting properly.

•This is exactly why I always report everything, even if it's just $50. Better safe than sorry with Washington ESD.

The key thing to remember is that you still need to be able and available for full-time work. Taking a part-time job is fine as long as you're still actively searching for full-time employment and can accept a full-time position if offered.

•Good point. The part-time job is pretty flexible with scheduling so I think I should be okay on that front.

•Yeah and you still have to do your job search activities too. Don't forget about logging those in WorkSourceWA.

I had this exact situation last year! I was working about 16 hours a week at a coffee shop while on unemployment. The earnings definitely reduced my weekly benefit but I was still getting something from Washington ESD. Honestly it worked out well because I had some steady income plus the partial UI benefits.

•That's encouraging to hear! How long were you able to keep collecting partial benefits?

•I collected for about 4 months while working part-time, then eventually the coffee shop offered me more hours and I transitioned off unemployment completely.

One thing that really helped me when I was dealing with part-time work and unemployment was using Claimyr to get through to an actual Washington ESD representative. I had so many questions about reporting earnings correctly and the phone lines are always jammed. Found them at claimyr.com and they have this demo video (https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ) that shows exactly how it works. Way easier than spending hours trying to get through on my own.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that service. How does it work exactly?

•They basically handle the calling and waiting for you, then connect you when they get a live agent on the line. Saved me so much frustration honestly.

•I might need to try that too. I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about a different issue and can never get through.

Just remember that when you report your earnings, you report the gross amount for the week you actually worked, not when you get paid. So if you work Monday-Friday but don't get your paycheck until the following week, you still report those earnings for the week you worked.

•Ah that's a good distinction to make. I wasn't sure about the timing of when to report.

Paolo Esposito
•Exactly right. It's based on when you performed the work, not when you received payment.

Also heads up - if your part-time earnings are really low some weeks, you might still get your full unemployment benefit. There's like a small earnings threshold where they don't deduct anything. I think it's around $25 or something but don't quote me on that exact number.

•Yes, there is a small earnings disregard in Washington. It's currently $5 plus 25% of your weekly benefit amount. So if your weekly benefit is $400, you could earn up to $105 that week before any deduction.

Keisha Brown
•That's actually really helpful to know! My weekly benefit is $380 so sounds like I have a little buffer there.

Whatever you do, just be honest on your weekly claims. I've seen people try to hide part-time work and it never ends well. Washington ESD has ways of finding out through employer reports and tax records.

Keisha Brown
•Definitely planning to be completely honest. Not worth the risk of getting in trouble.

•Smart approach. The penalties for not reporting income can be pretty severe.

I'm in a similar boat but I'm thinking about doing some freelance graphic design work. Anyone know if that counts the same as a regular part-time job for reporting purposes?

FireflyDreams
•Yes, all income including freelance and self-employment income needs to be reported on your weekly claims. Same rules apply.

•Good to know, thanks! I'll make sure to keep good records of any freelance earnings.

Does anyone know if there's a limit to how many hours you can work part-time while on unemployment? Like is there a cutoff where they consider you not really unemployed anymore?
0 coins
Paolo Esposito
•There's no specific hour limit in Washington, but you have to remain able and available for full-time work. If your part-time schedule conflicts with your availability for other jobs, that could be an issue.

Oliver Weber
•The key is being available for full-time work during normal business hours. If your part-time job interferes with that availability, you might have problems.

This thread is super helpful! I've been scared to take any part-time work because I thought it would mess up my unemployment completely. Good to know it's actually allowed and expected.

•Washington actually encourages part-time work while on unemployment. It helps people stay connected to the workforce.

One more thing - make sure your part-time employer knows you're on unemployment. They might need to report your wages to the state, and it's better if everything matches up from the start.

Keisha Brown
•Should I mention it during the interview or wait until I'm hired?
0 coins
Freya Nielsen
•I'd probably wait until you're hired. It's not really relevant to the interview process, but good to mention once you're filling out paperwork.

Actually ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and finally got through to Washington ESD about my own questions. The agent was super helpful and confirmed everything people are saying here about part-time work. Definitely worth it if you need to talk to someone directly.

Just want to add that you should keep really good records of your work hours and earnings. Take pictures of your timesheets, save pay stubs, etc. If there's ever a question about what you reported, you'll want documentation.

Keisha Brown
•Great advice! I'll start keeping copies of everything from day one.

Does the type of part-time job matter? Like would working in retail be treated differently than doing delivery driving or something?
0 coins
Paolo Esposito
•No, the type of work doesn't matter for reporting purposes. All earned income gets reported the same way on your weekly claim.

FireflyDreams
•The only thing that might matter is if the work schedule affects your availability, but that's more about your specific situation than the type of job.

Quick question - do you report tips if you're working in a restaurant or service job? I'm thinking about picking up some serving shifts.

•Yes, all income including tips needs to be reported. Keep track of your daily tips so you can report accurately on your weekly claims.

Been doing part-time work while on unemployment for about 3 months now. The extra income really helps stretch things out while I'm looking for full-time work. Just stay organized with your reporting and you'll be fine.

•Honestly it's taken some pressure off so I can be more selective about full-time opportunities. I'm not desperately taking the first thing that comes along.

One last tip - if you have any specific questions about your situation, don't hesitate to contact Washington ESD directly. Whether through their website messaging or finding a way to get through on the phone, it's better to ask than guess.

Keisha Brown
•Absolutely. I'd rather know for sure than accidentally mess something up.

•And if you can't get through the regular way, services like Claimyr can really help with that phone connectivity issue.

Just wanted to add one more thing that might help - when you're working part-time and collecting unemployment, make sure to keep a simple spreadsheet or notebook tracking your hours worked each week and your gross earnings. This makes it super easy when you're doing your weekly claim filing, and you won't have to scramble trying to remember exactly how much you made or when you worked. I started doing this after my first week and it's been a lifesaver. Also, if you're unsure about anything on your weekly claim, there's usually a "help" or "?" button next to each question that gives you more specific guidance about what to report.
