Can I have a part time job while on Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I've been unemployed for about 6 weeks and getting UI benefits from Washington ESD. A friend told me I can work part-time and still collect some unemployment but I'm not sure if that's true or how it works. I found a potential job that's only 15-20 hours per week and pays $18/hour. Would taking this job mess up my unemployment claim? Do I need to report the hours to Washington ESD when I file my weekly claims? I'm worried about losing my benefits completely but I really need the extra income.

Yes, you can work part-time while on unemployment in Washington! You need to report ALL hours worked and gross wages earned when you file your weekly claim. Washington ESD uses a formula - they'll deduct your earnings from your weekly benefit amount but you might still get partial benefits depending on how much you earn.

•That's a relief! Do you know what the formula is? Like if I make $300 in a week, how much would they deduct from my weekly benefit?

•It's a bit complicated. They subtract 75% of your gross earnings from your weekly benefit amount. So if your weekly benefit is $500 and you earn $300, they'd subtract $225 (75% of $300) leaving you with $275 in unemployment benefits.

Just make sure you're still looking for full-time work and meeting your job search requirements! Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week even if you're working part-time. Keep documenting everything in your job search log.

•Good point about the job search requirements. I've been keeping track but wasn't sure if I still needed to do 3 activities if I'm working.

•Yeah definitely keep doing your job searches. I made the mistake of slacking off when I got a part-time gig and Washington ESD flagged my claim during an audit.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks to ask this same question but their phone lines are always busy! Has anyone actually gotten through recently?

•I know the frustration! I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual Washington ESD agent. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Saved me hours of redialing.

•Thanks! I'll check that out. I've been calling at 8am sharp every day for two weeks with no luck.

Be VERY careful about reporting your hours correctly. I know someone who got hit with an overpayment notice because they didn't report some part-time work properly. Washington ESD will cross-reference your wages with employer reports so don't try to hide anything.

•That's scary. What happened to your friend? Did they have to pay everything back?

Fatima Al-Qasimi
•They had to pay back about $2,800 in overpayments plus penalties. Took them months to resolve through appeals. Just be honest and report everything when you file your weekly claims.

wait so you can work AND get unemployment?? i thought it was one or the other

•Nope! Washington state allows partial unemployment benefits if you're working reduced hours or earning less than your weekly benefit amount. It's designed to encourage people to take part-time work while job searching.

•damn i wish i knew this earlier, i turned down a part time job thinking it would mess up my benefits

The key thing is staying under 32 hours per week. If you work 32+ hours, Washington ESD considers that full-time and you won't be eligible for any unemployment benefits that week, even if your pay is low.

•Good to know! The job I'm looking at is definitely under 25 hours so I should be fine.

•Also make sure you're still able and available for full-time work. If the part-time job restricts your availability too much, that could be an issue.

I worked part-time for 3 months while on unemployment and it was honestly great. The extra income helped a lot and I was still getting about 60% of my regular unemployment benefits. Just be super accurate when reporting your hours and wages.

•That sounds like exactly what I need right now. Did you eventually find full-time work or are you still doing the part-time thing?

•Found a full-time position after 4 months. The part-time work actually helped because it kept me active and gave me recent work experience to talk about in interviews.

Make sure your part-time employer knows you're on unemployment. Some employers get weird about it but it's completely legal. Also, you'll still need to be available for work during business hours in case you get called for interviews.

•Should I mention it in the interview or wait until after I'm hired?

•I'd mention it upfront so there are no surprises. Most employers understand the situation, especially for part-time positions.

Does anyone know if this affects your job search requirements? Like do you still need to apply to 3 jobs per week if you're already working part-time?

•Yes, you still need to meet the job search requirements unless Washington ESD specifically waives them for your situation. Keep applying for full-time positions and document everything.

•I called Washington ESD about this last month and they confirmed - working part-time doesn't change your job search requirements. You still need 3 activities per week.

The Washington ESD website has a good calculator that shows how part-time earnings affect your benefits. It's under the 'Weekly Claim' section. Really helpful for planning out your finances.

•I'll check that out, thanks! Having a calculator would make this so much easier to figure out.

just remember to file your weekly claims on time even if you're working. missing a week can mess up your whole claim

•Good reminder. I've been filing every Sunday like clockwork since I started my claim.

•Yeah I missed one week when I started working part-time and it took three weeks to get it sorted out. Such a headache.

I'm in a similar situation but with gig work (DoorDash, Uber). Same rules apply - report all your earnings even if it's just $50 for the week. Washington ESD wants to know about ANY income.

•That's good to know. I was thinking about doing some food delivery on weekends too for extra cash.

•Just keep really good records of your gig earnings. Those 1099s can be tricky to track if you're not organized about it.

Has anyone had issues with Washington ESD questioning their part-time work? I'm worried they'll think I'm not serious about finding full-time employment.

•As long as you're meeting your job search requirements and staying available for full-time work, you should be fine. Part-time work while on unemployment is very common and accepted.

The one thing that caught me off guard was taxes. You'll get tax forms from both Washington ESD and your part-time employer, so make sure to account for both when filing.

•Oh that's a good point. I hadn't thought about the tax implications. Thanks for mentioning that!

•Yeah I got surprised by a bigger tax bill because I didn't have enough withheld from my unemployment benefits. Consider having extra taxes taken out.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to clarify any of this, I had success with Claimyr recently. They got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying to call for days.

Bottom line - yes you can work part-time and collect unemployment in Washington. Just be honest, report everything accurately, and keep looking for full-time work. It's actually a great way to bridge the gap while job hunting.
