What happens if you get a part time job while on Washington ESD unemployment?
I've been collecting unemployment for about 6 weeks now and just got offered a part-time job that would be about 20 hours a week. I'm worried about how this affects my Washington ESD benefits. Do I lose everything or can I still get partial payments? Also confused about how to report this when I file my weekly claim. The job pays $16/hour so it's not huge money but would definitely help. Anyone been through this before?

You can definitely work part-time and still receive partial unemployment benefits! Washington ESD has a formula they use. Basically they subtract your gross weekly earnings from your weekly benefit amount, but there's also a small deduction they take first. So if your weekly benefit is $400 and you earn $300 that week, you'd still get some unemployment.

•That's a relief! So I won't lose everything. Do you know what the small deduction amount is?

•I think it's around $5 but don't quote me on that exact amount. The important thing is you report all your earnings honestly on your weekly claim.

Make sure you report the earnings the week you actually work, not when you get paid. I made that mistake and it messed up my claim for a couple weeks.

•Good point, I wouldn't have thought of that distinction.

•This is super important! Report when you work the hours, not when the paycheck comes.

I was in a similar situation last year and had trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about part-time work reporting. The phone lines are always jammed. I ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really saved me a lot of frustration.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that. How does it work exactly?

•It basically keeps calling Washington ESD for you and gets you connected when an agent becomes available. Super simple to use and way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•I might need to try this too, I can never get through when I call.

WAIT A MINUTE why is everyone acting like this is so simple?? I tried working part time while on unemployment and they completely screwed up my benefits. Took me weeks to get it straightened out and I almost missed rent because of their mistakes!

•What exactly happened? Did you report your earnings correctly?

•Yes I reported everything right but their system kept flagging my claim for review every single week. It was a nightmare.

You also need to keep looking for full-time work and doing your job search activities. The part-time job doesn't excuse you from the job search requirements.

•Right, I still need to do the 3 job contacts per week. Thanks for reminding me.

•Exactly, and make sure you're documenting everything in WorkSourceWA.

been working part time for 2 months now while collecting UI, no problems so far just be honest about everything

•Good to hear a success story! What kind of part-time work are you doing if you don't mind me asking?

•retail, about 25 hrs a week, still get like $150 in benefits each week

Just to clarify the math for everyone - Washington ESD takes your gross weekly earnings, subtracts $5, then takes that amount off your weekly benefit. So if your benefit is $400 and you earn $200, you'd get $400 - ($200-$5) = $205 in unemployment that week.

•That's actually pretty generous! I was worried I'd lose way more.

•Yeah the $5 deduction is to cover work-related expenses basically.

Don't forget you might owe taxes on both the part-time income AND the unemployment benefits. Just something to keep in mind for next year.

Sofia Martinez
•Ugh, taxes. I didn't even think about that part.

•You can have taxes withheld from your unemployment if you want, there's an option when you file your weekly claim.

I worked part time at my old company while on unemployment after they laid me off. It was weird but totally allowed as long as I reported everything correctly.

Sofia Martinez
•Wait, you worked for the same company that laid you off? How does that work?

•They brought me back as a contractor for specific projects. Washington ESD was fine with it as long as I was still looking for permanent full-time work.

If you do run into issues or have specific questions about your situation, definitely consider using Claimyr to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. I know I mentioned it before but seriously, trying to get through on your own is such a waste of time.

•How much does something like that cost though? I'm already tight on money.

•It's worth checking out their site to see what works for your situation. Way cheaper than losing benefits because you can't get answers.

Make sure your part-time employer knows you're on unemployment too. Some employers get weird about it even though it's totally legal.

Sofia Martinez
•Good point. Should I mention it during the interview or wait until after I'm hired?

Amina Bah
•I'd wait until after you're hired but before you start working. Just be upfront that you're reporting the income properly.

This is all making me nervous about taking a part-time job. What if I mess up the reporting and they think I'm committing fraud or something?
0 coins
Dmitry Volkov
•As long as you're honest and report everything, you'll be fine. Fraud is when you intentionally hide income, not when you make honest mistakes.

Oliver Becker
•I guess that makes sense. I'm just paranoid about doing anything wrong with Washington ESD.

I'm still bitter about how they handled my part-time work situation. Their system is so glitchy and the representatives don't even understand their own rules half the time.

•That's exactly why services like Claimyr exist. Sometimes you need to get to someone who actually knows what they're talking about.

•I might have to look into that if I run into problems again.

One thing nobody mentioned - if the part-time job turns into full-time, you need to report that immediately and your unemployment will stop. Don't try to stretch it out.

Sofia Martinez
•Yeah definitely wouldn't try to game the system. Just hoping this part-time thing works out for now.

•Smart approach. The part-time income plus partial benefits can actually be more money than just benefits alone.

The reporting is pretty straightforward in the weekly claim system. There's literally a section that asks about any work you did that week and how much you earned.

Sofia Martinez
•Good to know it's built into the system. I was worried about having to figure out some complicated process.

One last tip - keep all your pay stubs and work records. If Washington ESD ever wants to verify your reported earnings, you'll need documentation.

Sofia Martinez
•Great advice. I'll make sure to save everything.

•Yeah they can audit your claim randomly so having records is super important.

This whole thread has been super helpful. I was scared to take any part-time work because I thought I'd lose all my benefits.

Dmitry Volkov
•That's a common misconception! The system is actually designed to encourage people to take whatever work they can find.

Isabella Oliveira
•Makes sense when you put it that way. Better to have people working part-time than not working at all.

I just went through this exact same situation a few months ago! Working part-time while on unemployment is definitely allowed and honestly saved me financially. The key things that helped me: 1) Report your earnings the week you work (not when you get paid), 2) Be prepared for your claim to potentially get flagged for review the first week or two - this is normal, 3) Keep detailed records of your hours and pay, and 4) Don't forget you still need to do your job search requirements. At 20 hours and $16/hour, you're looking at around $320 gross per week, so after the $5 deduction you'd still get a decent chunk of your regular unemployment benefit. The math really does work in your favor!
